Anaya On The Road
United States

I like to hit the road from time to time, and quite often I go alone. I find many of the places I've visited to be quite interesting, so I figured why not share some of it?

Former Site of Ebbets Field
For 45 years the Dodgers called Ebbets Field in Brooklyn home. The historic former site is commemorated by a small plaque on the site of an apartment building.

One of the longest rail journeys in the country and one of the most scenic in the world, Amtrak’s California Zephyr crosses from Chicago to the Bay Area. Traveling by train is a personal favorite of mine, so I thought I’d make my offering to cover this beautiful route from end to end. For the first time in nearly 7 years a Total Solar Eclipse crossed part of the United States on April 8th, 2024. After having witnessed the eclipse in 2017 I knew I had to see this one, but the weather had other plans for me and millions of folks. Originally planning for southern Texas, cloudy forecasts sent me to Arkansas to witness this celestial event. Intro music: “Untitled” by Death On Wed...

Why don't they clear out the lake brother?
great and informative video! i'm in NYC for a function and i'm hoping i'll be able to convince my wife to find that plaque and the flagpole to get some pics. so glad i found your video! thanks for sharing!
Waoo...hostory...
The video of your trip was phenomenal! I especially loved the history. I've got to take this train. Thanks for your video and information.
Thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed the video. And I’m sure when you make it happen you’ll enjoy the trip as well!
I'll be in Wagon Mound in a few days, and I'll look to see if they are there Labor Day 2024.
Awesome! I hope you’re able to check them out. Though judging from some IG accounts I follow, they really are dwindling to near zero 😔
@@anayaontheroad2129 The old signals are still in place. On Labor Day 2024 I counted 8 of these signals north of Wagon Mound, NM. I was hoping to get over to the tracks to get a picture of the Amtrak next to the signals. Didn't happen, I got busy packing up the travel trailer and was on the wrong side of Wagon Mound when I heard the train.
@N0MTNAmateurRadio that’s great to hear that a few are still there! I literally just ran into a guy that said he’d be taking a trip there to try and get some shots… too bad about the timing not working out for the train going by. I’ve definitely felt that frustration on some trips of mine lol
Thank you! Which season did you find to be more scenic?
Oh man, flip a coin! Haha…. If I had to choose, I’d probably say summer. Both are beautiful, but summer has more people on the Colorado river, and seeing all the folks waving, and mooning lol, adds a little to the adventure.
@@anayaontheroad2129 lol, thank you!
What was your favorite meal on this train? Did you sleep on the buttom bunk? How many hours of uninterrupted sleep did you get on this train!
Based off the menu of my most recent trip on the California Zephyr, for breakfast I like the omelet (French toast is good too), lunch I like the hamburger, and for dinner the steak is really good. I’m usually on the bottom bunk. And sleeping I wake up throughout the night normally so I’m a bad gauge, haha. But to me the rocking of the train is a nice part of it all. If you don’t mind that type of thing you can get a full night’s rest. Hope that helps!
I'm still amazed at the level of destruction from the eruption. Instant moonscape. Also amazed how quickly nature recovered. Much quicker than experts anticipated. The Earth is awesome
I remember a picture book from elementary school that got me interested in mt st Helens and the pics from afterwards were amazing! In that book it had pictures of some plants sprouting, and made it seem like it would be a long time. Then seeing it in person you can really appreciate how much has grown!
How does this guy not have 1 million subs yet?!?
Thank you! Appreciate the comment and glad you’ve enjoyed the videos!
So anyone born in California between 1950 and 2024 should be receiving a settlement check? From what i understand 😮
Your guess is as good as mine 🤷♂️
So your saying that osha can send out fines to who ever owns the water rights for mismanagement 😮? And air pollution, and cancer treatment? 😮 etc.? So we should be getting a check in the mail soon ?where everyone's settlement checks?? Right to know??😮😮
Wow, I had to re-watch this one to see what I said to get this type of response! 😳 if there’s any litigation going on, I’m not privy to it. I thought the video gave off the impression I’m just a dude that saw something interesting on the side of the road🤷♂️
Thank you for giving history. And the month you were traveling. That helps a lot with planning my trip
Thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed the video and that you found it helpful!
Thank you for giving history. And the month you were traveling. That helps a lot with planning my trip
Thank you! (I think your comment may have posted twice! 😀)
I was 13 when she blew in 1980. Just two weeks later, I was flying INSIDE the crater in a helicopter from my father's Reserve unit, which had made numerous life-savings rescues. The smell of sulphur bubbling up from boiling fissures in and outside the crater debris field has stuck in my memory ever since.
Whoa! That is so cool! You got to see something in person that the rest of us got to see in grainy 1980 footage.
I took the zephyr west for the 3rd time in a year last week. Roomette is the way to go. I always get the steak for dinner with shrimp appetizer and cheese cake. It's the best. I think I had my fill taking this train for a while. I'll probably get the urge to do it again in a few months. I always do, its addicting.
Totally agree! I’m a steak guy too, but I foolishly (and partly for the video to show other meals) did not order the steak on my first night only to have my dinner disrupted on the second night 2 of 3 trips so I never got to get the steak! Next time I’m for sure getting it first chance I get because you never know when you’ll have dining car issues! Haha And I totally get you, it is kind of addicting.
If they had moved to Queens, they could have been the Long Island Dodgers.
Somewhere in the multiverse!
@@anayaontheroad2129 O'Malley didn't want to relocate to Queens,so he moved to Los Angeles in a big backstabbing of the fans in New York
Makes one wonder how things would have been if he got the land in Brooklyn he was hoping for?
Let’s Go Dodgers!! ☝️💙
👍
That was excellent -- and a bit of a departure for you! Question: where are the stadium miniatures located?
Thank you! Yeah, this one I had a little less to actually show, so had to Google some images and include a few of my own. The Ebbets miniature, the home plate from Ebbets, and the display case with some memorabilia from the Brooklyn days are all at Dodger Stadium. I’d meant to include text to indicate that but forgot to do so in the edit 🤦♂️.
@@anayaontheroad2129 By Google's account I live 22 minutes from Dodger Stadium, so there's no excuse for my ignorance -- I figured they were at Cooperstown. Thank you again. Go Dodger Blue!
It’s on the press box/suite level along with a bunch of other pictures and memorabilia. I didn’t even know the public could visit that section until about 2 seasons ago!
Great video! My Grandmother moved a few blocks down Bedford Ave. after the Dodgers left and before they tore down the stadium. I went there in the early 80s when I was in school with a friend from my neighborhood in the city trying to find some remnants of the ballpark and there was nothing there at that time except a deli with the Dodgers name nearby and the corner stone on one of buildings visible from the street view mentioning Ebbets Field which you did not show. I had no idea about the metal home plate marker on the property and the flagpole which most books never mention. Kudos to you on doing some great detective work!
@apsny261 Thanks! I’m glad you enjoyed the video… I do regret not walking around the block of the old stadium, and just the neighborhood in general. I got too preoccupied trying to find a spot to record, lol…. I did think the flagpole was an interesting find.
I grew up in Ebbets Field. Moved there in '63. Fortunate to have walked in on the Dodgers filming a commercial for their reunion on the patio at 1720. I came up the stairs, and a group of the original Dodgers except Jackie were talking and smiling. I walked to the side and sat down on the bench when suddenly the air became electric and Jackie came up the stairs in a 3 piece suit jogged over to his teammates and they all hugged him and cheered, shook hands. I was stunned at the comradery, and I knew this was special. I'm sure residents saw this from their windows and balcony. I think I was the only kid onsite. I can still feel the energy from Jackie and the Dodgers to this day. It showed me what team spirit is and how essential it is to break barriers and win championships. It forever left me with the feeling of "oh, this is how it's done". With that said, Ebbets Field is in Crown Heights. Many talented and gifted kids that grew up there owe our abilities to the experience growing up there, and the influence from older teens and adults in the 60s and 70's. IS320 was the original name of the middle school, and even then, we discussed naming it Jackie Robinson Middle School. We saw and lived through tough times in Ebbets Field.
Wow! That is so cool. You got to see all those legends practically at your front door, and in such a candid way. Like you said, to be able to see that comradery even after those few years since Jackie retired. Thank you for the comment, it’s so interesting to hear first hand accounts of moments like this.
I know nothing about baseball, think i went to a braves game once when I was a kid. But this was super informative. Never knew the dodgers used to be in new york. then to la. neat
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the video…. Yeah, I didn’t mention it in the video but the dodgers moved out west with their rivals the giants, another former New York team up in SF.
Great info! Planning to do this with my teen kids next year for my 50th birthday. Curious about what time did you leave Chicago to see all these beautiful scenic routes on daytime. TIA!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the video. As for the train, it left Chicago at around 2pm.
lost me with first comment... grow up little boy
Aw gee mister. That video was a real long time ago, and I’ve growns a lot since then! Promise!
Awesome site👍
It really is a cool place to check out!
Loved the history, thank you for sharing. I took the same route in March 2022. I loved every minute. I had snow as well in the Rockies. I’m set to ride the Empire Builder next month.
Thanks! I was afraid the history might bog the video down, but I kept it anyway…. The snow really does add to the beauty! It’s been a while since I’ve ridden the Empire Builder so I’m definitely jealous right now! Haha
Wagon Mound is next to fall soon there will be no more semaphores of the Raton Sub.
Oh wow! Did those end up being the last ones? I just picked them because they were easy to get to!… sad to see them go, but I get it.
"Muggy-OWN"? I prefer your pronunciation, which has always been mine. I love that it has more original walls than Mesa Verde, which probably has more visitors. Great work, as always!
Haha, yeah, “muggy-own” doesn’t feel right, but that’s what the sign at three rivers petroglyphs said 🤷♂️. And that little stat was pretty cool, and they seem pretty proud of it! And who knows, it’s a percentage, so Mesa Verde might actually still have more overall. Glad you enjoyed the video!
Great video man, question for you I'm going in January is there a side that is better I have read that if your leaving chicago you want to have a roomette on the left?..thanks
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the video. As far as the better side, it’s almost a toss up, but slight edge probably goes to the left. In corn country it doesn’t matter much, after Denver the scenery is kinda split until the first stretch of the Colorado River seems to be mostly left side up til Glenwood Canyon which is mostly right side. Getting closer to utah and ruby canyon most is on the left. Nevada it doesn’t really matter and crossing Sierra Nevada I might give the edge to right side. But overall either side you’ll get great views. But when in doubt there’s always the lounge car where you can kinda see both!
Argh!- Dodger hat?? Nope!
🤷♂️😬
So you should have a camera too if taking pictures 😂❤??
Ah did I word something awkwardly? Haha I’ve been known to do that in my videos… a lot! Lol😂
I'm going to be doing this next October! But I'll be doing it backwards, from Emeryville to Chicago. I can't wait!
Awesome! I wonder if you’ll get any snow by that time? Either way it’s beautiful. And I suppose “backwards” is in the eye of the beholder, lol.
The Pioneer and the Desert Wind would be such popular routes nowadays, it's a real shame that they don't still run.
Right? Being in LA it would be nice to have a route to Denver, and I get the sense the Pacific Northwest would like that too. I know the LA to Las Vegas train has been teased for 25 years, though the brightline project seems to be for real, and I read an article a few years ago about trying to revive the Pioneer, so who knows? 🤞
My son and I will be taking this in July. Cannot wait for this bucket-list trip!
Awesome! And the nice thing about July is those long days to get in that extra bit of scenery each day. Hope you both have a great trip!
Great video. I like how you edited it. I'm taking this route in late Septemeber. Thanks for sharing!!
Thank you! I won’t lie, this is my longest video by far and I was a bit worried about the pacing. Glad you enjoyed it. And I hope you have a great trip!
The solar eclipse of August 21st, 2017 graced this location!
I saw some pics of that day and it looks like a lot of folks showed up. I ended up at some open field in Idaho for that one!
Very educational thank you
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed the video.
What was your favorite meal on this train? How many hours of uninterrupted sleep did you get on this train? Also you slept on the bottom bunk I assume, is that correct?
Personally, for breakfast I like the omelet, for lunch the burger is pretty solid, and for dinner I like the steak. I went out of my way to try as many as I could for the video though… As for my sleep i am sort of a night owl so I would stay up until around midnight only to wake up around 630 or 7 for breakfast. But I could have easily gone to bed earlier to get a full night’s sleep… and yes, I did sleep in the bottom bunk, mostly because one of my favorite things is waking up and looking out the window to see where we are. I briefly thought about sleeping in the top bunk to keep the bottom as seating, but not having the window stopped me.
I've seen many Zephyr videos now but I liked this approach of summarizing the journey as it happens, making it feel like a travelogue rather than a description of the train itself.
Thanks! I knew there were a lot of other videos out there and figured I’d put my own spin on it. Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks for sharing. Very informative and delivered in a nice, smooth and calm voice. My wife and I are planning to take this train in September as a retirement trip.
Thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed the video. And that sounds like a pretty nice retirement trip! I hope everything goes well for you.
Thanks for the informative video! I am considering taking it from Denver to Salt Lake City. Sonce it will arrive SLC at midnight, in your trip, what time did the train arrive SLC, and did you see many people talking off there?
Glad you enjoyed it!… on one trip we were on time and arrived around midnight. Once we were very late and arrived around 3 am. It was hard to get a sense of how many people got off the train. There weren’t any from my car.
@@anayaontheroad2129 Thank you for your quick response!
I am considering doing this thanks for sharing would you recommend people to ride coach?
Awesome! I hope the video helps… as for riding in coach it is fine, but for a long ride like the zephyr it has its challenges. Sleeping in a chair for two nights and not really having any personal space for that long can be a little tough for some folks… but the coach seats get the same views as the rooms so in that sense it’s just as great!
@@anayaontheroad2129 Thanks for the response!
Great job loved it very informative.
Thanks! I’m sure you caught the cameos, lol
Heading over to check the bridge out today. Thanks for the information!
Awesome! I hope you enjoyed the views of the gorge. And glad you enjoyed the video!
Sunset Crater I heard is monogenetic!
Sorry just saw your comment, well as soon as you left the parking lot, they lined the path on either side. After some years those gradually disappeared. Later still the smaller ones began to disappear from the top of the hill. Then more of the larger stones showed fresh scars of removal by, hammer & chisel. The rational for all of this I surmize is a something for a: fills an empty space on a shelf, b: a nice accent for the begonia in the garden, c: one for either side of the fire place set in the stone work. Or near the pool deck, all to show your obvious good taste in primitive object de art. I quit going in the 1970s as it had become to heartbreaking. There are some you have really got to scour for that boggle the mind given the context. It used to be customary to nail the coyote carcass to the fence post as a deterrence. Same goes for graffiti "artists" who lift their leg on rock formations or anywhere else. I digress.
Oh wow. Reading that is so sad and a little infuriating, but I guess it reflects more in the change of attitude towards sites like that than anything else. Then again even with today’s views of artifacts those types of people are still doing their thing 🤷♂️
Thanks for showing this to a guy from Greenville, Indiana! I appreciate the lack of background music in your production. You show, inform, and entertain in a very nice way! I subbed. God bless you and yours, and have a great day!👍👍
Awesome! Thank you for the kind words and glad you enjoyed the video. I hope you enjoy the more to come!
Awesome stuff, thank you 😊
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it.
An interesting tidbit about spirit lake. You are seeing the beginning formation of a coal bed. If you were to look under the lake you would see standing logs under the water. In a bunch of coal beds you would see the remnants of standing trees and the remnants of bark from those trees. That is where the bark from those logs are at.
Whoa! That’s really cool… or I guess I should say “really coal!” Haha
Beautiful part of the U.S. Visit if you can.
Agreed!
It's infuriating that they let those trees die for no reason , every single one of those logs should have been harvested instead of being left to rot . For a bunch of environmentalists, the people of the pnw have failed the environment over n over again ...
I suppose only seeing through the lens of economic value then it’s a waste, but getting to study a recently devastated area with minimal intervention has its own value.
why haven't we cleaned the lake up?
As far as I can tell they’ve decided to leave the region as undisturbed as possible to study how an environment rebounds after a such a catastrophic event.
