    Do you have old pianos in which piano action parts were completely replaced with brand new german piano action parts and strings, tuning pins were changed with german piano strings and tuning pins as well?

      @joelweber3462 Рік тому

      I restore many types of pianos and client finances or opinions can be reflected in what I do (and end result). I generally do use all German replacement parts, German hammers, German bass strings, Tokiwa damper felt. The end result, even of careful rebuilding is still dependent upon: original design, rim, bridge placement and SB characteristics.

      I used Abel naturals with either walnut or mahogany moldings . Very nice hammers that typically don't require much voicing. On this piano I may have brightened the bass and slightly needled down the 5th octave.

    Why did you apply white felt on the hammer bar when you could adjust the bar forward?

    • @joelweber3462
      @joelweber3462 2 роки тому

      Good observation :) I was teaching some apprentices about hammer distance from strings and capstan adjustment to ensure "aftertouch" (jack escapement). You note correctly that the normal method is move the entire hammer rest rail up, but this only a test action where the rail does not move - so I improvised.

    A restored 109C is one of the pianos I want to see. Did you rescale the strings? What hammers did you use?

    • @joelweber3462
      @joelweber3462 3 роки тому

      The hammers are made in Germany by Abel, and are Naturals (softer than heat-pressed). The original scale started at 14 gauge in treble: I did rescale and lowered tension some overall. Bass strings were custom made by Heller, in Germany. This model is single-strung in the tenor section.

    • @joelweber3462
      @joelweber3462 4 роки тому

      Some much of good piano rebuilding is attention to detail, and the cumulative effect of quality materials. Here I repaired several SB cracks, rib separations, installed new bridge pins, Heller bass strings, some rescaling of plain wire to lower tension, Abel naturel felt hammers, dampers etc... Regulating the action and voicing move from the technical to the creative and artistic side of piano technicians - but are crucial for improving the musical experience. Not having a recording studio on hand, nor media expertise - I simply mimicked most homes by placing moving blankets under the piano (so tricky, I know)

      @@joelweber3462 I'm a big believer in "The Compound Effect" myself! But you still have to have the knowledge (as you clearly do) to hone in on the most impactful actions to take. For me voicing and regulating is almost a celebratory act at the end of a long arduous, non-musical journey with the instrument. :) (I've have heard great things about Heller. I suspected you didn't carry the Mapes down to the wound section.)

    • @joelweber3462
      @joelweber3462 4 роки тому

      The 109C is generally measured at 6'03. If you look at the pictures on my website you will note though this design adds extra soundboard area in the tail, making the tail area quite large/wide. Creating an even tone is helped with new, quality German hammers and, adequate time voicing. Behning was a very nice piano builder and the few examples I have found produce a very sweet tone. At 6'08 you Behning is closer to a Steinway B size and with new strings/hammers could be a very impressive instrument! www.weberpianocare.com/projects

    Do you know what scale number Chickering designated this piano?

    • @joelweber3462
      @joelweber3462 4 роки тому

      The piano was semi-restored before we worked on it, so what we observe is both limited and potentially not original. I don't recall any scale stamped onto the plate, but with the serial number you might get more information from chickeringfoundation.org/

    • @insidepianos
      @insidepianos 4 роки тому

      My Chickering concert grand (no. 15308) has the number 141 at the bass of the plate. I actually made a few scale alterations both in terms of the wire thickness and by re-notching the bridge in a portion of the melody section.

    • @joelweber3462

    • @joelweber3462
      @joelweber3462 5 років тому

      The piano had been previously rebuilt before it came to me in 2019 for restoration. Assuming previous restoration did not misrepresent the serial number, then this piano was made in 1925 - and is actually referenced in the Piano Atlas (#15237). This recording (made on my phone in a hurry) demonstrates Mapes strings along with Abel Hammers. A nice, deep low register. The German softer hammers allow the treble to sing without extra harshness.

    • @insidepianos

      There's so much uncertainty and misinformation (no accusation here) re: the dates of Chickering concert grands since they were serialized differently than the rest of their line.
