Polycrates (574 BC - 522 BC) was from 537 BC. around 522 BC. tyrant of the island of Samos. Polycrates was famous for his proverbial wealth and fortune. Believing that a man who was too lucky would sooner or later be struck by serious misfortune, Amasis, pharaoh of Egypt, asked Polycrates to give up something truly precious, so that this loss would represent a great misfortune and avert a worse one. Polycrates therefore decided to deprive himself of a very precious ring that he was very fond of and threw it into the sea. Some time later, a fisherman caught a fish of considerable size and decided to give it as a gift to Polycrates, but, while the cooks were cooking it, they found in its belly the ring that the tyrant had thrown into the sea. When Amasis learned that Polycrates had managed to recover the ring, he understood that the tyrant was too lucky a man and that sooner or later he would be struck by a serious misfortune. Not wanting to be overwhelmed by Polycrates' ruin, he decided to break the alliance. Some time later, Amasis' fears came true. In 522 BC, the Persian satrap Horetes lured Polycrates to his side and had him executed by crucifixion. From then on and for over a century the Persians maintained control of Samos.
