Barn Owls - Bad day at the Box
Переглядів 2754 місяці тому
Lily the female goes missing for 2.5 hours and then removes two of her three chicks on her return.....why? This is a very sad development but we are hoping her final chick will make it. Our theory is she let them get cold and they were distressed. On her return they did not respond to her as usual with their twittering / chirping call and she sensed something was wrong. She removed the youngest...

Stunning footage I walk around langsett reservoir a lot and have never seen a dipper there is it on the river near the bridge?
Glad you liked it and yes that’s the spot 👍
@@PeterGarritysaw the dipper this morning it sat on waterfall briefly then flew down stream under the bridge. Does it tend to stay down stream most of the time or does it come further up the river by the footpath. I’d love to photograph it but I don’t think there’s access to the river past the bridge below the waterfall.
Hi below the bridge and weir, I got over wall , right down to the edge and used a camouflage net from Dawn to get most of the footage - looking upstream of the bridge on the right - just before the pumping station - there’s a gate which can be climbed which gives access to the bank alongside the weir and you can see under the bridge where the birds sometimes nest .
What a great watch! Hope they've been returning in similar numbers since? Hoping to get Brambling onto my life list this Winter!
Glad you enjoyed it - sadly very few since, odd one or two , winters have been mild though 😢
Oh, this brings back recent memories Pete. Fair old trek along Dukes rd but well worth it..
It was Jon, I think I did that walk twice and nearly broke my ankle in a bog 🤣
Maybe the other two were sick or something.
I think so 👍
Brilliant! Not keen on flies in my office either, great bit of behaviour captured Peter..
Thanks, she’s a lovely character ( assuming she is a she ) not sure at this stage 🤔
Hey there!!! What camera lenses were you using? The footage looks gorgeous!
Hi, glad you liked it - From recollection I think it was my Canon 500mm F4 prime lens with a Canon 1DX mkII body
It performed magnificently, thanks for sharing!!
The song should have been about an ugly Barn Owl instead of an ugly Duckling. We agree with AndyP
Thanks very much , it’s appreciated 😊
Hi Pete is this the type that bred in West Sussex for the 1st time for the first time in Britain in600 yrs in the book and film Wilding? An historic event I believe.
It is Doris, yes 👍, it’s possible it’s either a European migrant or one from the Knepp reintroduction scheme as you say
@@PeterGarrity Went to see a preview of the Wilding film and interview with Isabella Tree at the Show Room a week last Monday. Have her book now. Fascinating!
Great stuff Pete - highly professional; you should consider contacting Springwatch with footage like this. Andy Platts
Thanks Andy, I did try a couple of times but no response - they’ve always got what they need it seems
This is brilliant, so hoping all goes well for Pandora.
Thanks Paula 😊
Very sad, but nature knows best I guess. fingers crossed for the remaining one!
Thanks, I hope it survives, it’s sat upright now with open eyes and feathers starting to appear so it’s got a chance
@@PeterGarrity Fingers crossed then :)
Is it raining or was she in a fight or something. Her feathers looked kind of unkempt.
Sounds like... you, what do you think you're doing, what do you think you're doing.
This bird plays the guitar very well 😊😊
🤣🤣
What are they eats?
Insects and invertebrates
What a delightful & informative film.
Glad you enjoyed it
Hi Peter am in Northern Ireland as a young boy I would regularly see Brambling, Yellowhammer and Linnets. The numbers of Yellowhammer and Linnets still low but this year I have been seeing a surprising number of Brambling. Sadly though I had a few puffy looking chaffinch appear and then lots of my garden birds was sick Tric had hit and I had to stop feeding. Do you know is there a recommended disinfectant or bleach to kill Tric?
Hi there - the British Trust for Ornithology are currently working to get better data and I expect better advice for the public. They are undertaking surveys in southern England initially and looking at Tric. All I can suggest is using a domestic disinfectant on feeders and feeding stations - if you have a serious breakout then I would also suggest postponing feeding for at least two weeks and if possible get your neighbours to do the same. I personally think feeding on the ground sparingly can help but diseased birds regurgitate food as they can’t swallow so it’s not without risk 😩
@@PeterGarrity yeah my normal course of action has always been using domestos bleach, back when I was a boy although it was rarely seen and I never knew what it was called I knew it was some germ and domestos had that line kills all known germs dead lol and it did work. If it not Tric it’s been one of my 3 sparrow hawks killing birds this winter. I saw 5 Brambling on the day of the great garden bird watch I was tingling as I hadn’t seen a Brambling since I was a young lad and after I sent off the number 5 on the laptop I then wrote strike that 5 there is now only 4 Brambling and a sparrow hawk. I was bouncing 😭
Still a great species to add 👍
@@PeterGarrity oh aye undoubtedly it was but I see one of them 3 sparrow hawks at my feeders every day. And it’s 35 to 40 years since I seen a Brambling. I guess having 5 at one time I was just being greedy lol
Такой славный мышонок...
Yes , very cute ☺️
Сплошная милота...
Glad you liked it 😊
We were thinking of going to Mexico, Now we will!!
Plenty of birds 😊👍

Thanks for the beautiful footage. You have such a nice and soothing narrator voice.
Glad you enjoyed it, many thanks
Not just cats but people as well can be attacked by Tawny owls if you go to close to the nest
Agree 👍
Bull finches really are beutifull birds
Yes they are 👍
Amazing work, better than most TV documentaries! Owls are my favourite!
Many thanks, glad you liked it.
Only just seen this Pete, marvellous. What a winter for Waxwings, the ones I texted you about at Bowdenwoods were so tame. Seen some on Tinsley Golf Course too..
Cheers Jon
Really good video of a usually not too approachable bird. I would prefer it without ambient music, which distracts from the variety of bird calls and songs I can hear in the background.
Ok, thanks
1st like and 1st comment in 3 years! I love these ducks. Thanks for posting.
Glad you like them! 😊
@@PeterGarrityI did a search for them because, supposedly, they're the deepest diving ducks. And I'm a certified SCUBA diver :)
Thank you for sharing this. Reminds me of seeing these as a child in huge flocks in Great Coates, Lincolnshire. They're also known as Pyewipes where I'm from.
Glad you enjoyed it 😊
Fantastic Pete. I don't think they found the white rowan berries I had in my garden for them. You'll have to get them to follow you back to Green Moor. Thank you for the video.
Thanks Doris, glad you enjoyed it. They did visit the sorbus behind the schoolhouses for a few days so we were lucky 😊
Excellent video Peter, thanks for sharing 😊
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks
0:46 was so funny😂
Glad you enjoyed it 😊
Quality as always Pete

Thanks Justin, appreciated 👍
There has been a flock of waxwings on trees beside Manchester Road,Sheffield for about a week
Yes thanks, I have seen them a couple of times this year at Crosspool 👍
Very nice video with a pretty Ring Ouzel singing her beautiful and somehow melancholic song!
Thanks, glad you liked it
Excellent. And you captured it slipping into a brief bit of willow warbler mimicry
Thanks glad you liked it

I’ve heard that sound before but thought it may be a frog!
Certainly memorable 😊
Kohh kawen
Amazing footage! That looks like a huge fish (do you know what kind?) the bird caught! The fish was struggling, but the hungry Grebe managed to fully consume (alive?!) it all okay? It looked like the unlucky thing was still desperately kicking staring down that long neck! I wonder, does the large fish stand any chance of escaping if eaten in that condition? Maybe it can turn around inside the elastic throat/stomach and has a chance of survival here.
Thanks , the fish is a large RUFFE, which is a U.K. coarse fish similar to a Perch. I doubt if the fish would have any chance - once the birds swallow them head first I’m afraid it’s all over.
Fully fledgling?
This was a juvenile from Europe which spent time in the U.K. then apparently returned all the way back to its birthplace in the Pyrenees
Beautiful!! Managed to film my first ever Barn Owl last week in the Netherlands and then I see this video. I have the idea though that Barn Owls in the UK ar easier to watch during the day or twilight where here they only leave their roosting sites when it is already very dark.
Many thanks 😊
It’s sad knowing that the Albatross is unlikely to find a mate this far north.
Agree - I remember one I saw in the Shetlands in the 80s. Who knows what happened to that one?
One has just this moment flown over my house.
Excellent 👍
Brilliant video 😊a brilliant video, thanks for sharing 👍
Thanks John 😊
Magnificent, well done! I esoecially enjoyed the shots of the booby with cormorants.
Sweet clip
Many thanks
A wonderful little film Peter - thank you for sharing!
Many thanks, it was a privilege to film 😊
Thank you Peter for another magnificent film. This was most enjoyable and interesting to watch.
Many thanks, really appreciated
