HISTORICAL DIALOGUES: “Comfort Women” – New Research from Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, and Indonesia
Historical Dialogues Network Seminar “Comfort Women” - New Research from Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, and Indonesia held on 11 October 2023
Moderator: Mary M. McCarthy (Drake University, USA)
Participants: Kevin Blackburn (Nanyang Technological University, Singapore). Katharine McGregor (University of Melbourne, Australia), Sachiyo Tsukamoto (University of Newcastle, Australia)
Date/Time: 11 October, 2023: 0600-0715 (New York), 1200-1315 (Berlin), 2100-2215 (Melbourne/Sydney), 1900-2015 (Tokyo)
Overview: Panel moderator Professor Mary McCarthy of Drake University talks with the authors of three recent books on the history of women from Japan, Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia subjected to enforced military prostitution by the Japanese army. Each author reflects on what their research adds to the historiography of this topic and what is new about their findings. They address the particular challenges women from these countries have faced in bringing their experiences to light and why the transnational movement for redress has not had as much impact in these countries or for these particular women. By doing so, the participants offer new insights into this global movement for redress and how national, patriarchal, and local cultures have impeded it.
Books discussed:
Kevin Blackburn, 'The Comfort Women of Singapore in History and Memory', NUS Press, 2022.
Katharine McGregor, 'Systemic Silencing: Activism, Memory, and Sexual Violence in Indonesia', University of Wisconsin Press, 2023.
Sachiyo Tsukamoto, 'The Politics of Trauma and Integrity: Stories of Japanese “Comfort Women”', Routledge, 2022.

Thank you for posting the account of Mr Choi Siew Hong. It was a privilege and honour for me to meet Mr Choi, when he was the Deputy Governor of Bank Negara in 1972. Upright, impeccable clarity of thoughts into speech. I was a mere sapling compared to this giant. Those occasions were, when whilst putting his signatures on documents I brought, included a single visit to his residence amongst the government bungalows in Ampang area, I was introduced to his son, who was with Finance of Esso. A patriot, a manager, a visionary Malayan. Salute.

thank you for sharing. Useful for teaching secondary one history =)
Nice vid!! Keep it up!
Dear Mr Kevin, will you be able to tell whether Mrs Rassamma is present? If so, can you let me know how to contact her, as we could arrange Lt Bharati Asha Sahay of Rani of Jhansi Regiment (INA) to speak to her?
Last I heard, Mrs Bhupalan was still alive and well and living in Kuala Lumpur. I have not contacted her for years though. She is 94 this year (2021) and has been active in public speaking. Her wikipedia biography is still active. I have her address and house telephone number from when I used to get in touch with her, but I would be reluctant to provide that publicly here. You can contact me at my university e-mail address at the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. I am easy to find on the web.
@@kevinblackburn2105 thank you very much. I shall be sending u the email
interesting interview
Thanks for sharing such video. more videos should be uploaded
From recorded accounts, Dalforce was divided into Communist and Nationalist elements. Regardless, most of them joined to fight the Japanese who invaded the Chinese homeland. These included the over-60 couple who fought at the Bukit Timah battle. These stayed on even when it became obvious that their equipment was ridiculously inadequate (an old hunting rifle with 7 rounds of ammo - 7, not 70). The 3 English-speaking Raffles College students who joined had made it a point in recorded accounts to distance themselves from the motivation of the others who joined. They made it a point to say they joined for adventure ie. for the fun of it. I would have preferred that the last narrated account from a Dalforce veteran had been from a member of the majority group.
