About Shauna Cole
I want to help you get the job of your dreams! I founded the job board hirediverse.ca (jobs.hirediverse.ca/) to connect diverse professionals with employers who value inclusion.
I know first-hand that injustice shows up in the workplace in lots of ways. It’s those vague but powerful prejudices that run like currents below the surface of office politics. It's wrong. But so is perpetuating the dishonesty that bias is history. So, I’ve taken my experiences to create a job board and content that focuses on inclusion.

    I have a toxic boss who is unethical and hated me for being by the books, to get me out the way, he tried every trick like micromanaging, extreme criticism, undermining me, accusing me of stuff etc. But I stayed strong despite all the obstacles he put in my way, he even had the opportunity to recommend me for a promotion and he told me he won't because according to him I'm not ready, when I do both mine and HIS job and yes I was applying for his title, in another location (he was probably insecure). 2 months ago, I had overslept and was late for my shift, and he wrote me up as a verbal warning. Recently he found out that he can give me a final warning so rewrote my verbal as a final warning and basically if it ever happens, legally he gets the pleasure to fire me. I didn't want him to get that satisfaction, also was too stressed with his drama and was aware of his spiteful nature, so I listened to a fellow coworker and decided to take a transfer and demote myself. I cried a lot because I had worked really hard for my promotion and outperformed my Manager in every aspect. It broke my heart as I kept thinking what others would think. I demoted myself, people would think it was a stupid move. But I'm glad I prioritized my mental health and took this decision. It's 3:36 am as I'm writing this but I really wanted to thank you for uploading this video. I got the answer that I needed, I did the right thing 💯 (will definitely be using the extra time away from management responsibilities to look for another job)

    Im mexican-american. I remember the first time someone hit me with the "Are you mexican?" question instead of the "what are you?" question. It felt sooo validating. So uplifting. I couldnt believe it. I was so excited. "Yes!!! I am!! How did you guess??" And this boy, who i had a crush on, proudly told me "Cuz you have a mustache, and mexican girls have mustaches." Oof. Lost all the wind in my sails. Like the only time I can get ""relief"" as an ambiguous person is if other people go hard into racial stereotypes(obv this is not a real relief). Im so thankful that my young response at the time was to *lean into* my body instead of away from it, a lesson my mom always wanted instilled in me. I have hairy arms! And an almost unibrow! And dark fuzz on my lip! Frida Kahlo lookin ass child, and it is a beautiful symbol of my heritage and everything my family and ancestors have struggled and survived through. Thats sick as fuck. Im also soooo thankful you brought up gender!!! I am a trans man, and slightly gender ambiguous. At this point, when people ask me "What are you?" I have to laugh and just ask "Which part are you talking about?" Because sometimes theyre talking about my gender/sexuality (many people assume Im a gay cis man, if they dont think trans). Its added a complicated layer to my racial experience.

    • @ShaunalCole
      @ShaunalCole 2 місяці тому

      It's so powerful to hear about your experience and the validation you felt when someone recognized your Mexican heritage, it's too bad that this was based in stereotyping :( I imagine how adding gender into the mix brings a whole new layer of complexity to these experiences! The question "What are you?" takes on multiple meanings, and navigating assumptions about gender and sexuality can indeed complicate the racial experience. Thank you for sharing your journey and the ways you embrace all aspects of your identity.

    I’ve been w a med size private company since its inception 26 years. I was #2 under owner for 20 yrs. A new owner has come on board and been her direct for 5 yrs. She has suddenly hired an outside CFO, and he has hired someone in order to split my role, all without consulting me. I am HR btw. So now she wants me to move all my accnt duties (and my reports) to new employee. But I feel she is pushing me out, and my reports have been extremely upset. I will ask for a new job description? And confirm benefits. I’d like to just ask for severance, but maybe it will be more clear w clear definitions. Thank you.

    You have to remind yourself it’s temporary. Then take it one day at a time. Resume. Make Indeed/Job sites a hobby. Go over descriptions/pay/benefits. Just apply. Schedule interviews before your shift, during lunch, or schedule multiple on a day that you’ll call off on. You’re qualified, by reading job descriptions you’ll see you’re qualified for roles based on transferable skills, or those duties that your current/prior job added on over time..

I try to handle the increased workload, and prioritize--but when i try to set boundaries, they say you're a bad worker--their expectations are utterly unreasonable. No one should be expected to work 7 days a week 12/hr days. It feels like throwing energy into this black hole of need that will never be filled. I am in a difficult position as I work for a relative. I used to enjoy it, but I am underpaid and I've recently been given a lot of duties that I don't like. It is difficult to leave as this relative relies on me being there and would really struggle without me, especially as quite a few people have retired recently and I am more or less the only one left to train new staff. If I was working for someone else I wouldn't care as it is not my fault that she allowed there to be a significant key person risk, but as it is a relative I am forced to consider this. This is different to a lot of people as I am not reliant on the income and there are skill shortages in my field so I should be able to find another job pretty easily, but I am stuck there nonetheless.

I'm the one who has to listen to him complain for 40 hours, and so when I say he is upsetting me I get called the complainer. Management will not relocate me or promote the other guy.
