    Oh the memories Ray! Many thanks for putting all your cine films together and giving us old codgers some nostalgia. I went to sea in 1963 and finally retired in 2006. General cargo ships, Bulk carriers, Anchor handling/supply ships, Drill ships, Jackup rigs, Semi submersibles, Lighthouse ships and finally Scottish Fisheries Protection Agency for 6 years. Good luck to you in your retirement.

    Great Video Ray such a shame all the great ships, shipping companies and seaman have all sadly gone.. the demise of our once great merchant fleet was ❤ breaking.. I’ve been going to sea for 46 years only a few British ships left RFA the biggest employer and they are struggling to crew their ships. 🧑‍🍳🧑‍🍳🫡🫡

    Great to see both parts of your sea travels. I was a Deck Apprentice with Furness Withy started 1963. The last of the good old days. Your pictures brought back many fantastic memories. One of my periods was Master of the AutoStrada so your pictures reminded me of that period. An awful time for awful managers. I will say no more. Took early retirement when I was 50. Made redundant 3 times in my time at sea. But don't regret it and so nice to see all your films, photos and memories. All the best. L.

    Thanks for taking the time to post the film Ray. I worked in the shipping business ashore and recognised many of the Palm line ships in your video. I think the last one I ever shipped cargo to West Africa on was the Apapa Palm. My later father was a merchant seaman from Liverpool. According to his discharge book,he did one trip on the Esso Exeter from Fawley to Aruba in April 1962,and like you, tankers weren't for him. He returned to general cargo vessels, mainly with Harrison Line and finished his career with Cunard in 1965.

    Ces navires n'ont pas une très bonne réputation car souvent très haut sur l'eau en offrant une prise au vent importante , ils " roulent " bord sur bord ...

    • @RayPurdy
      @RayPurdy 4 місяці тому

      That's true Jacques, they roll the most when the sea & swell are on the quarter from aft, like most ships. The wind is definitely a problem sometimes when manoeuvring in port.

    Thanks for sharing Ray. Brought back many happy memories, apart from running into FOS and getting our arses kicked with the Mistrals, it was a good life for me. Was lucky to see a lot of those real ships still running in 70-80s. Also managed to do a bit of everything, coasting, RFA, UBC, Denholms, Jebsens and CP Ships. The wife enjoyed Norfolk in the 69/70s. Went ashore once too often there and ended up 😂living there going on 37 years. Did 70-84 as an RO/REO and then 33 years as a shore tech in Norfolk. Hope you are getting the treatment you need. Thanks for the memories.

    Always wanted to go to sea, but instead worked all my life in the Nuclear Industry. Luckily lately project managing shipments of materials to and from Japan, the Netherlands, France and the USA, using the PNTL ships and also managing the decommissioning of four of the older vessels in the Netherlands and Belgium. Loved the old shots of Tokyo, visited there many times. Kind regards Chris Purdy
