These video lectures and demonstrations support the work of my art and design students at Marquette University High School. These long form lessons are continuations of in-classroom instruction that started in January 2020 and are organized into classes and units. I have made these videos publicly available to help support art teachers and stay-at-home parents scrambling to get instructional content online.

Digitally color hand drawings using Adobe Illustrator
This tutorial walks through how to import a photograph from your sketchbook into Illustrator, turn your line work into vector, and use shape tools and Bézier curve tools to add color underneath your lifework.

Cyanotype Contact Print

Sensitize a piece of printmaking or watercolor paper with cyanotyping solution, let it dry in a dark place, then expose it to UV light. Sunlight prints will take between 20min to an hour or more. A UV exposure unit will reduce exposure times to 4-10 minutes.

Draw neck pyramid onto your anatomical proportions printout to emphasize the support structure for the skull. Draw in the basic skull shapes front and rear. Use these drawings to correctly block in the neck and head in clay.

Draw limb blocks onto your anatomical proportions printout to emphasize the limb taper from shoulder joint to wrist, hip joint to ankle. Use these drawings to correctly block in the limbs using thin strips of clay along muscle pathways. Use the anatomical drawings of Jeno Barcsay as a guide.
Developing Black and White film

This is the process we use at MUHS for developing HP5 and TriX black and white film. Before beginning the process, watch this tutorial entirely and practice winding old film onto developing reels. A printout of the developing instructions is available in the Photography Moodle course.

Work at eye level (or as close as possible). Keep reference materials close by and take regular caliper measurements. Connect the pelvis and chest blocks by massing in the abdomen. Use strips of clay that run up and down along vertical contours so that features flow one into the other.

Draw a pelvis and chest block onto your anatomical proportions printout across all front/back/side views. Use these drawings to correctly block in the forms using clay. Sculpt the blocks to be the appropriate size and position by consulting your model photographs. Keep the blocks inside the final contours of your finished form.

Rough-off the sharp edges of your mounting block with sand paper. Drill a hole for each mounting wire and epoxy your armature into position. Two-part epoxy sets in 5-10 minutes and will cure in a few hours. Hot glue or any other hard-bonding adhesive will work as a substitute.

My V600 will not recognize the Espon scan software for film strips. Did 2500 35mm Slides no issue, but it refuse to connect when doing film strips,. It did one then quit. Spent an hour with Epson Tech and they sent a replacement scanner. It did one film strip then quit recognizing.

Hi Peter, thanks for making and sharing this video. I'm looking to rebuild a Mamiya RB67 I got from a friend. It's missing a focussing screen, cocking mechanism and lens 'was' stuck, bellows are totally trashed and the light baffle flap doesn't flip all the way up. After watching tons of videos on UA-cam, I've unstuck the lens and mechanism, figured out how to make bellows and I'm currently working to figure out the light baffle situation. However, I find that there's very very very little resource on UA-cam about ground glass for medium format cameras. So I'm looking to make my own ground glass and Fresnel lens combo and would appreciate any tips from your wealth of experience on this subject matter. I'm looking for the most budget friendly and resource restricted solutions, so I'm asking questions like, can i use any Fresnel lens or do I need a specific type? Are there any other devices (like laptop screens) that use similar fresnel lens? etc PS: I have digital fabrication tools like 3d printers and laser cutters available to me and I'm very comfortable designing parts and building things.

Which fabric have to use able for soft sculpture?
For my classroom work with students new to hand and machine sewing I find semi stiff crafting felt works well. Relatively inexpensive, comes in lots of colors and it's pretty forgiving. Something like this www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07VXDNBZ4/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
What gauge wire is that? What would you recommend for a much larger/ heavier puppet? Thanks!
My apologies for the tardy reply. Been busy in the studio with students and not posting much to this channel. For 8inch tall figures we use 1/8th" - 10G - 3mil wire. It's stiff enough to hold up the small figures and soft enough to shape by had with simple hand tools. 2, 3, 4, more? strands can be braided (twisted) to dramatically increase holding power without having to buy larger diameters. For much larger forms we weld together steel armatures.

Here's a better idea for 35mm, pull out just enough film with a Matin Film Leader Retriever FILM PICKER for 35mm cassettes to attach to the steel reel. Place it into the dark bag and finish loading the film. Place the reel into the tank, cap it and remove for processing. The whole ordeal takes about 3 minutes. Or, use a Patterson plastic reel and do the same thing. For 120 film, use the steel reel and do everything in the dark bag. Forget the plastic reel when it comes to 127 or 120 film. Learn to use the steel reels and you'll live a better life.

You're right! I love basic ball jointed figures. Especially for stop motion animation simple drawing references. But they get a little pricy for a classroom environment where I'd need to shell out for 20-30. I like to keep it simple for sculptors who may have limited access to materials. I choose to focus on techniques instead of pricy workarounds.
I'm SO GLAD to have found you! I have a couple of Paul Jackson books and have always wanted to create any and all of his projects. Unfortunately, I moved around a couple or three times and all my reference books have ended up in storage rather than in my home - I have no room for so many things I'd like to play with. You are inspiring me to dig those books out and refer to them as I follow along with you. You are a most talented artist! After looking at your list of vids on your channel, I had to quickly subscribe. I can hardly wait to view all your work. Is this wire that can be fired`?
This sculpture wire is 100% aluminum and definitely not intended for even low fire applications. Nickel Chrome wire can be fired in ceramic clay bodies but still use caution and fire some test pieces first. The polymer clay I use in this video will never be fired or dried. We use it only for modeling lessons.

How do you glaze this as there is no foot. Won’t it stick to the kiln when it is fired?
What's up Chris - we do a variety of surface treatments in my studio. Fluxing glazes are only one - and you're right, without an unglazed foot it would stick. But mason stains, light spray coats, colored slips or other non fired surfaces are all fair game in non-functional works.

What size is your wire?
For small 8in figures 1/8in (3mm, 9AWG) is plenty for the main structure. I use what ever I have around for windings. 1/16thin (1mm) is probably ideal.
