At Okeechobee Florida airport in a 1951 North American T-28 A, Curtiss Wright R1300 800hp with the Hamilton Standard 23D40 prop. Running up the engine after changing to the Tempest spark plugs, later we changed the oil.
Up over Okeechobee

Just after takeoff, circling up and over the grass field above Okeechobee, Florida in the R1300 powered T-28A, cold morning 40 degrees on the ground. Headed up to 5000 feet west of the field to exercise.

Rolling away just west of the Okeechobee Florida airport in a 1951 North American T-28 A, Cutiss Wright R1300 800hp with the Hamilton Standard 23D40 prop. 5000 or so feet over grass fields and the lake glistening to the south. Cold dense air, a perfect morning with a buddy!

A quick pass over the Okeechobee Florida airport in a 1951 North American T-28 A, Cutiss Wright R1300 800hp with the Hamilton Standard 23D40 prop. Coming down from 5000 or so feet over grass fields, a little bumpy with the late morning heating beginning on the ground. The A model, the original NAA design, with it's tapered cowl is by far the fastest model!

You better hope their is no hydraulic lock, cranking it with the starter like that!
Beatifull plane
I have this plane in RC
We use to call these (in the USAF) T-28's "Flyin' John Deere's".....Sounded much like a 2 cylinder Deere...
Johnny, how would you compare performance with the 3 blade prop vs the 2 blade? You already answered an important question about the harmonic vibration problem with the 2 blade. I remember the T-28A used to have some RPM ranges you had to avoid with the 2 blade...going back many years ago. From the video it looks like you have one of the later A models with the B style canopy and higher fuel capacity. You know you have one of the finest flying recip airplanes ever built. The Navy needed more power for flight deck ops but the Air Force instructors in the T-28A really liked that airplane as it is with the R-1300.

fucked up looking paint job.....
Is that really a Fram PH8A oil filter on a vintage warbird??? I see this video is from 2013, but even then, the internet was awash with comments disparaging the Fram orange can of death. So much so that people wouldn't even trust that filter on their 15hp riding mower.
Appears so 😂
Friends don't let friends fly with Fram!
Interesting how much down angle there is on the engine.
I flew the A model at Randolph AFB back in 1965. Slow to climb but cruised at 160 or so its. Always remember how docile it was -- spins 3 turns with quick and easy recovery. Flaps were like barn doors.

The engine looks somewhat forlorn on the big airframe. What about the flying characteristics, is it nice to fly despite the smaller engine?
Good Question
it still sounds like a briggs and stratton after all these years. sweet
Sorry, but you are driving like an Old Lady, ok, PC: "a little too conservative" If you hear that bogging vibration again, you are on a Sunday Drive, get too it, redline every apex.
Sure, and you drive like you are wearing your Old Ladies Army boots. Boner
And what are your qualifications to judge? "Redline at apex" would indicate to me complete ignorance of the reality of driving a race car.
You drive like an old lady.
OK, this is fun, lets get into it. So you're what is known as a 'troll', correct? I've always wanted to meet one so you look like you're it. My friends are watching this string with considerable interest so lets get at it. As I understand it a troll is defined as someone so lame and ineffective in life you criticize those who are doing what you couldn't even come close to to doing, right? Gotta try to bring someone down to your sad level? And likely an older person who looks back on their life as a failure, opportunities lost, no hope for satisfaction of a life well lived (the tipoff is the "Old Ladies Army Boots"...what young or even middle age person knows that reference?). Is that you? And the second characteristic, after making unsubstantiated negative general statements as you so expertly have done, is avoiding answering direct questions as to their qualifications to judge. Right? So far so good. So as to make the line of reasoning solid I ask again: what are your qualifications to judge? Fun!!!
Nope, waste of time, go under your rock
The R-1300 has a 40 spline shaft?
Seriously? Only 200ish views? Great vid!!! Thanks. This is T28A right? as far as I know it has 2 blades? The B/C and D has three. Correct me
We had just changed the oil, fixed a fuel leak, we were both covered in oil, tons of fun! Yes this is an A model, the original, in the 50's they had a two bladed Aeroproducts steel prop. Most now have been converted to a three bladed Ham Std Hydromatic aluminum prop. No harmonic vibrations.
