I met one of the guys from Mary’s Danish at a gas station in Maryland in 1992. He was in line buying a large beer and an apple. I asked “Where’s Mary?” and he said “She’s in the bathroom.”

This was just a straight-up awful interview, in my opinion, bordering on rudeness on Elliott's part.

Flippin' Out was by far, the best album of 1994. Every song on that LP was a masterpiece. Where I Find My Heaven was a power pop classic and glad they had a minor hit with it being on the Dumb and Dumber soundtrack. Figurine and Cope were my personal faves. Love the Aunts!

What a great interview! I forgot Chris Mars had a solo career before he retired and became a painter. Also that run from Let It Be to Pleased To Meet Me was great for The ‘Mats, I’m glad those are his favorite records. He was very critical to the sound of the band.

By this point, The ‘Mats had grown up and most of the original members were gone: Chris Mars left and became a painter, Bob Stinson died some years before this. What’s sad is that they finally reached some clarity, but it came at a cost. Some will say this was when The ‘Mats were more mature, I’d argue they were more laid back by this point, Paul Westerberg’s songwriting was always mature, though no one was really listening.

Such an unforgettable show. I was fortunate enough to be there that night.

I think elliott was really trolling the posi gen x vibe that was around pre 9/11. There was a real lets be happy naive thing going on and his attitude and slant was the perfect juxtaposition to this. Alot of these presenters are receptive to his honesty. I'm sure he was just having fun with his fame and he did seem pretty chipper at times wrapped up in the absurdity of the media and fame.

I remember seeing this when it aired and while it was great to see a couple of my music heroes on MTV, I couldn't help but kind of feel embarrassed for both of them because of how awkward they were sitting there not knowing how to be natural. Bob sounded like someone's grandfather saying "neat" and talking about Ben & Jerry's and Lou constantly looking up at the ceiling as he's talking. Regardless, it was really cool to have these guys on 120 Minutes since it seemed rare to catch really great bands on it, especially when the regular hosts were always playing shit I could care less about.

I love this man and relate to him so much. He was a genius. I have the same depressive problems he has where it’s just always super depressed, there’s no couple of bad months and then remission. It’s just very bad or bad. I lack his genius of course. He suffered greatly and died painfully, but I do believe he is finally at peace. He is nothingness. Just dreamless sleep. That said, I can only listen to Elliott now and then because I listened to him throughout my whole twenties and early 30’s and realized the music may make you feel like your understood and not alone, and it even kinda makes your struggle seem romantic. But all it’s doing is teaching you to think negatively if you don’t also listen to more upbeat stuff. I struggle with negative thought patterns so I just stop by and feel as much as I can feel without cracking, and then I listen to the Beatles or something.

Such a humble artist too. We used to message each other years ago on MySpace. Once I said I thought he was absolutely brilliant and he was really grateful for the compliment. Most if not all of bulk was recorded on a 4 track, cassette machine in his living room in Athens Georgia backed by Liquor Cabinet.
