    You can actually eat stinging nettles raw. Just roll the leaves a few times between your fingers and that will neutralize the stingers.

    • @madrabbitwoman
      @madrabbitwoman 2 місяці тому

      Letting them wilt does the same. The stingers get their strength from water pressure

    If you took a 2x4 and cut it so it looks like the letter A along the 3.5 inch side and made it four feet long. Next bury about a foot or two into the ground with the pointy side up you could work the hide over it while it is drying and it will come out soft and pliable.

    Understand concern of temp but cooking it to well done is why it tasted like liver. The way any protein tastes is all on how it is handled and prepared. Removing all fat, sinew, silver skin, and cooking to 140 degree, resting to allow to come up to 145 produces a subtle almost pork roast flavor. When handled correctly otter is some of the most versatile protein to cook with. Partially because it is so neutral in flavor. It really soaks up the seasonings or marinades well. Maybe something to think about and revisit later.

    Started tanning hides using an already old library book, lots of guess work, a few successes. I used a smooth cypress knee to work while drying. That was long before the internet. I was recently given a frozen beaver tail and find my interest in tanning reignited. Thanks for putting so much time and effort into this video. You're very succinct without being short on information. If you ever get to texas look me up, meanwhile I'll be enjoying your channel.

    When trapping beaver under these conditions, don't rely only on Castor lure and old chew locations. Use a lot of eye appeal at each set. For example, traps set at old "Crawl Outs' should be slicked up with fresh mud and freshly peeled sticks or hatchet choppins and castor.. At other locations, pile up some fresh mud about a foot high and finish off with castor lure and some freshly peeled sticks. If you only rely on Castor lure, the lure is only as good as the wind direction. If the wind is blowing back up over the set, the beaver will swim right past your set all night long without even knowing it's there. Eye appeal is huge in beaver trapping. Also, Maine recently went with a five foot rule for all beaver and rat trapping. That is 5 feet from dam, lodge, bank den, and another trappers trap.

    • @mikewhitman745
      @mikewhitman745 Рік тому

      The 5 foot rule depends on what zone you're in. I don't need 5 ft from anything but another trap, which if I knew someone else was trapping there I wouldn't set mine at all anyways.
