H/K were known as Wide Band receivers. Overpriced for comparative output but some folk swore they sounded better than the Pioneer, Kenwood, Sansui, Sony, Technics, Marantz of that period. Not a lotta bells-n-whistles on the H/K receivers but they were popular. Gotta love the soothing green back-lit dial scale. It oozes mid 1970's nostalgia and quality.
Please try this AR9 tip from an owner of a original set from new. Score a separate bass controller like a NHT unit and bi amp the AR9's run your highest wattage amp the the four bass drivers then run your sweetest and most extended amp to the low, mids and tweeters. Then when you are listening to them pull them free from the walls both rear and side to marks on the floor and get them out from where they can rest when just providing killer background music. These speakers can image just not when tucked into corners.
Hearing this song brought back so many good memories
Великолепно! Спасибо за внутренности проигрывателя!
Hello. Thanks for posting this video. I remember as a kid when Technics were great. What's do you consider a good price for one these at the thrift store fi it's in working order or not working?
This one is 20Wpc a good price would be $50-75 in good shape another $60 in caps and lamps and your good to go for another 30 years
@@ddd2184 Thanks for your response! 👍
Man you are like me! I have all the HK Citations combo's ever made and you and I both need an intervention!!
I've always loved H/K . I got a A224 and T224 from my grandparents and that started it..
Magneto?
NO.. I do my own work
i bought Phase Linear turntable with linear tracking arm i inquired about the Rabco and dealer said he was sorry he sold them.. kept breaking down did you have trouble setting up or using this arm ?
No I've used them since the early 80's . No real issues over time they did require some cleaning and minor service but overall they work very well. It's powered by a C Battery.. I think the battery going dead might be why they thought it was breaking down
Got a 2040 magi two months ago for 15 dollars all banged up and figured I’ll never get another chance to experience one of these if I don’t get it. It wouldn’t read anything upon tampering with it and testing the capacitors value it needed a recap in the swing arm and laser board and got it fixed to where it won’t skip any more. How ever I am thinking about replacing the caps on the power supply because sometimes depending on the cd I use, it struggles at the last 3 tracks if I use cds with 19 plus tracks the end . It’s crazy how it reads through some of my bad damaged cds and some of the good taken care of ones struggles maybe they are defective copies. I just got into the hobby and doing my own repairs still need the proper equipment to dial in the laser I haven’t touched that yet .
What other receivers would you recommend? Thank you
Well I would stay away from any receiver that has STK package outputs.. Or receivers that used "Bat Wing" Transistors.. You'll have to do some research as many manufactures used these..
@@ddd2184 Thank you.
How did you fix the draw, i just saw one in a thrift store, tray does not open the tray, but display comes on OK. Buttons seem to work. Does it have a belt?
Yes it has a drive belt to open the draw
@@ddd2184 Thanks I shall replace it and see what happens
I have the sl pg 420 and its NEVER missed a beat / skipped in around 40 years.. Proper quality.
I finally found the tray wheel for my fd 2040 to work the laser was still good on mine and the sound is great.
Hey nice video. I just got my hands on a fd 2040 I’m looking for the tray wheel gear that attaches to the motor with a belt but I’m not so good at finding the part name I ordered a cdm4 wheel with belt from Amazon hopefully it will fit ✌️
yes yes yes

Hello, I collect cassette decks. Will you service my RS-M85? Is there a way I can get in touch with you? Thanks.
Classy, lovely looking machine, better lookin' that the TC-645, which I have. The TC-645 has F&F heads - no wear as I can see. I had to do a heck of work on it, and have recalibrated '0' VU for tapes that can take the flux densities.
I bought mine for 800 sek, sweden.. it's like 80 dollars.. sounds perfect
I started out with a Thorens TD125B and an SME3009, changed to the Rabco SL-8e, but the Thorens was a poor fit so I sold it and the SME and bought a Technics SL-110. Flipped the arm board over and mounted the SL-8e, which unlike the Thorens, was able to allow the dust cover to fit over the SL-8e structure. Then I brought out the cue wires to a separate switch on the mounting board so I didn't have to reach over to the arm's lift lever. Still works fine today, from 1974. The deck of the SL-110 looks bigger than your Sl-120.
Awesome, and LOVE your choice of album.
"if its too loud, your too old!!" Love that quote. Gonna be my next tattoo hahah. Take it easy bro!
Mad looking tonearm!! You install this yourself yeh?? Gusesing it moves along that rail? crazy.. All da benefits of a straight tonarm with the wear of an S one! Nd tbh im just happy to have a pair of 1210s and a vintage vestax pre by aged 20 ahaha. Couldnt live without direct drive also!! Looks funky tho!!
I have a Technics SL- J 33 Linear tracking turntable . I Love it !
I'm not familair with the track but to my ears that's skipping all over the place (and before you say, it's not my connection. Thats just fine). Anyone?
It's the song. It's odd cadence makes it sound like it's skipping, but obviously it isn't because Phil's words are not.
Check the song: Genesis, Down and out. It has an unconventional rhythm pattern, hence you think it is skipping :)
A friend worked at a large electronic chain and the Technics reps from Japan called it Technics, pronounced tek-nicks.
Your friend is correct..
'Technics' is a different word to 'Techniques'. What's wrong with people?
@@andrewmosienko1748 It's a New York Accent kinda thing.. Goes back to Crazy Eddie Commercials
Them there were three, Nice!
Skipping all over the place :/
If you hear it skipping it's your connection

I had one of those 80s Technics that was a sort of close-and-play version that had liner tracking. Hated it. Great music selection there BTW.
I remember the "Close and Play" tables a few Mfg's were making them.. Just as CD's were coming into fashion.
Guessing that's a non-powered arm? From what I'd been able to find, manual linear arms seemed to be rare. Must have been a job getting it aligned etc when installing.
The arm is powered by a C Battery. It has a Servo motor to move the arm assembly
@@ddd2184 Oh cool. Interesting build. Think you might putting one of those on an SL-10? Good candidate for it.
@@jameslaidler2152 I have one on a SP-25
une copie d'une platine Revox .....
Revox copied Rabco the arm came out in 1969.. Revox was 1978 Mine arm s from the late 70's
I see the cutting pliers supporting one of the legs - is your work bench out of level, or the turntable? Did that model need to be super level for proper operation?
Yes my work bench is not level.. so I had to improvise.. It has to be pretty close to being level but it will track even if its off
Im interested in one of these. I know we have likitationsnwith compression through YT but is rhis a good and full sound at a decently low volume or dontou have to kimda crank it uonto get that warm full sound? Obviously our definiteions and ideas of a fill sound might differ but, you know... I appreciate any insight you might jave tinoffer.
This is playing at about 5 wpc If your speakers are efficient 96 db@1m @1watt you should have no problem. If you want to play at Concert levels.. You might want to get something bigger maybe a 730 or a 930 would be a better fit.. This one has been completely recapped with some added capacitance in the power supply..
Not the prettiest receiver, but it's all about the performance. Looks like something Soundesign would have designed with those gaudy colored lights.
So in 1977 Harman/Kardon was sold to Beatrice Foods.. and the Receiver division was sold to Shin-Shirasuna This model was offered 79-80 So It might have been made in the same factory as Soundesign.. But all receivers of this era do look somewhat similar..
@@ddd2184 It wouldn't surprise me if they were built in the same factory. By '79 '80 the stereo wars was pretty much over and many manufacturers were looking for ways to cut costs.
Thank you
Question sir I have a 680 with one channel not working any chance you can direct me on repairing it? Thank you
Well could be an interment contact on one of the switches but.. Most likely STK-0039 Output Pack is bad.
PS...Title of this music? I like it!☺🔥❤
Loveless by Lo Moon
@@ddd2184 Thank you SOOO much!👌
I like that..."If it's too loud, you're too old!" Very nice Crown gear! I've owned Crown since the late 70's...❤👌
Have a hk505 with cycling protection circuit, one chanel draws a lot of current when i pass the protection, all transistors and diods seems fine. Its a pain to work on
I owned a Pioneer RT 707 that was purchased at the post exchange in Ramstein Airbase when I was stationed in Europe. Had used it for a number of years. Then I stashed it in the closet after buying a HiFi VCR. It did everything a reel machine does plus record TV / Cable shows and movies, although not as attractive. I gave away my reel for a song and dance years ago. Kinda regret it. I understand it's now going for about 10x the price I paid for it (330 in 1977 dollars).
We need skilled people like you here in New York City.
I have one. He has a flaw that I'm almost giving up on: he loses his station. It is there tuned, centered, with 4 SIGNAL LEDs, with stereo on, playing some songs perfectly... but suddenly the station is changed by itself, for example if it is on radio 99.9 it changes to 99.8 or 100.1 and leave the station. I wouldn't want to throw it in the trash. I like him very much. I can't find the service manual anywhere. Do you have any repair suggestions for me to do? I'm thinking about doing the full recap, but I'm not sure that will solve this problem of the station getting lost on its own. If you can help me I would be very grateful.
Try cleaning the tuning resistor pot first.. and then the capacitors in the tuning circuit.
@@ddd2184 Could you tell me which capacitors are in the tuning circuit???
I looked on eBay there is the output transistors new replacement ones about 30 dollars a pair
Nec hasn't made the transistors since the 90's the eBay ones are most likely Counterfeits... Fairchild did make similar rated devices but they have been discontinued.. You can modify the design with TO-264 devices..
I just got one today pristine condition for 40 dollars with the box and papers
First, is this shin-shirasuna (made in jp) or Roland (made in tw)? What was done to this unit? Why all this test gear when nothing is shown of its performance (electrical) as a receiver?
It's a Shin made in Japan. Completely gone over and recapped. If you want to buy it I'll make a spec check video for you. The video is about equipment you might have wanted when you were younger but never bought. Not about how to repair.
I got them now 😄 took me a random day and a old man who was selling his setup can't believe i paid £40 in COVID lol😅
Botched job the more PS audio I see the less I want it.
This was a First generation player and it sounds good.. But Difficult at best to work on.. An Interesting Idea to get in the game.. The other PS Audio Videos I have are Second iteration of PS audio After the original founders left.. More Consumer based..
I recently took a chance and got the AP-1800 at online auction. Won the item with 1.2 seconds remaining to bid. Pretty sure it was never used. I've got it hooked to an old early 80's Kenwood with clean specs. I almost wept last night when I tested everything out. I'm into everything from hard rock to you name it. That clean output between the Kenwood (many underestimate the good amps Kenwood made) and the Heathkit is just phenomenal. I was even listening to The Nutcracker. Oh, couldn't agree more, I got totally fortunate that whomever built the Heathkit really nailed it. It's only got one switch that just feels a bit scratchy, but still no audible static when flipping the switch, just feels funky. As an ironic sidenote, Steely Dan's "Black Cow" is always my initial go-to test with new, used gear. Lol. Good taste.
I got the receiver from Pioneer I always wanted abaout 15 years ago. It's a SX-737. A receiver which is considered by many, many to be one of the best receivers Pioneer ever made. And you know what? I am strongly inclined to agree on that. This receiver, the SX-737, has a great smooth sound and I and many others love it. If I'm laucky? You don't need to ask.
I remember that one.. 'll have to see if I can find one on EBay to rebuild..
