no map/portal pt 8, first iron (swamps): valheim

a first water landing in the swamps is already one of the more challenging milestones in the regular game. doing so in no map no portal is even moreso. you need to bring forge materials ahead of time so that you can craft onsite, at least enough to make some iron nails to build the big boat. you also want to bring some materials for furniture to raise your comfort, as this shore outpost is also...

locating, prepping for, and fighting the elder was my first real "away from home" adventure in this world, since the location was across the water and required sailing. you can win this fight fairly quickly and dont have to worry about staging furniture for bonus rest. 8-10 minutes is plenty.

the gate-keeping of serpent stew behind swamp tech (iron cooking rack and spice rack) ranks among this game's all-time bad nerfs. i used to love pushing the envelope to get early serpent meat and enjoying the spoils, but there's not really a benefit to doing so since hearth and home.

sailing is risk/reward in no map, no portal. on the one hand, it is the optimal way to travel and haul metal. on the other hand, you can get in over your head very quickly and lose your bearings. stay near the shore until you are comfortable navigating using the sky branch, sun/moon, or other indicators.

after your initial meadows shack, the border of a black forest along the shore is an ideal place to establish a more permanent base. you want to make sure you have access to "big water," which is to say, not just a bay that you have to sail through to reach the ocean.

having run out of things to do in my regular ashlands world, i started a no map/portal world around the end of may and completed it last week. it was a great experience that really changes the game. now im just roaming around, looking for the trader, getting into trouble.

spoiler: it escaped the boat when i tried to sail away and bring it back to my base.

as with the silver sword or other lower tech one-handers, silver knife is fine because you can support it with a modern shield.
