In this episode we ride from Maun, Botswana to Tsumkwe, Namibia through one of the most remote border stations on earth (one that Ewan and Charlie actually came through on Long Way Down)! And we learn the tragic reason why the Herero women of southern Africa wear such ornate, Victorian dresses.

The Everglades: Finding Heaven in Hell
Переглядів 4,7 тис.2 роки тому
Overall impression: Wonderful! Amazing! A must do! Some of the tightest, coolest paddling we've done. BUT... You gotta be rock solid on your navigation skills, have two or three GPS's with cached maps, a backup hardcopy map of the area, and a couple of compasses. And you need to know how to use all of them and have plans B, C, and D if they fail. This is remote, maze-like swamp with no dry land...

Nice video, thks for taking the time and sharing. I know now that kayaking the Everglades is not my cup of tea😊
@@Maryam-ue3vw That was not the goal! The Everglades are amazing! 🤣🙄
In such wilderness, I take a GPS and TWO backup GPS units with multiple batteries. Only needed the backup once, but that was enough.
We had a dedicated GPS, two phones with maps setup for offline use with On X, and paper maps and compasses as the fourth backup. So, yea, don't mess around out there!
I’d like to paddle the Hell’s Bay trail, but my kayak is 16’ long. Looks like yours are about the same? Is it so tight that I’d have to worry about getting stuck at a turn, or was there always enough room to maneuver? BTW. I’ve found trekking poles to be valuable when paddling mangrove tunnels such as at Caladesi State Park.
Yea, I had a 16' kayak. It was definitely tight in places, but never felt like, oh, we might not be able to actually make the corner. I'd guess tons of people paddle it in 16' canoes, as well, so the park service probably goes out of their way to keep it clear with enough room to make turns. Definitely (!) would take a single blade canoe paddle with me if we go back. A super short one. Would've made life soooo much easier in the tight mangroves. (Then, obviously, switch back to a double blade as soon as you hit open water.)
Great! I was really concerned about that. Imagine driving hundreds of miles for nothing.
nice...contemplative. thanks
Just amazing!
Love the evergllades.
Very cool. We did five days from Everglades City out to Picnic, Camp LuLu and Fakahachee all by canoes and that was challenging. You could pick a portion of a few days just right, but invariably you will hit wind, seas and currents in the face. We did a very similar route in your video, but camping by skiff. Your first Chickee is a rough one. It's in a river bend so while nice to be out of the wind for a bit, it was a challenge with the bugs as there was no wind. Our favorite was Plate Creek Chickee and Pavilion Key beautiful places to camp, stars everywhere at night and the wind that you hate while paddling is great for bugs. It's one thing to experience this, it's another thing to also capture that experience with a great video. You did an excellent job.
Thanks @longstrangejourney4776! Totally agree about Pavilion Key. We spent a beautiful night there. Just enough of a breeze to keep the mosquitos away and about a gazillion stars overhead! One we won't soon forget...
I got lost in that place 3 times. How were the mosquitos and no see-ums in Feb?
It is an incredibly easy place to get turned around in. Often looks identical in every direction! Bugs? No sweat during the day (I'm sure the breeze helped). First trip (this trip), the calm nights were oppressive with mosquitos. The second trip we did (another video on here), we took a Thermacell backpacker mosquito repeller with us. Best $35 ever spent!! Sat for hours drinking wine, listening to blues, and looking at the stars. As long as we were within a few feet of the Thermcell, never got a bite...
The mosquitos are a function of temp., humidity and on the water, they are benign, on land they can be a nightmare, I am getting the $35 thing. thanks. yeah, the place is heaven for sure without the bugs.@@brent23961
11:39 cut that ladyfish up for bait might get some snapper or maybe a nice redfish!
Wonderful!!❤
They were amazing! I could've sat and listened to them all day!
❤👍👍👍
That was awesome.😃
Awesome trip and nice videography. I have to say that is the best route flyover I've seen in any of these adventure videos. Just curious about your work flow there. Did you upload real GPS data to GE and then record the flyover over the route? Or did you draw the route manually? Cheers.
Hey! The light blue/green line is the actual GPS track from a Garmin inReach. The fly-over route was drawn manually since we wanted to be able to back off a bit and see the route from a little bit different angle. Especially around corners. Bit kludgy, but glad it was helpful!
@brent23961 Right on. I'll have to try your approach. I've been using the app Relive, that automatically does a similar thing. But yours is so much better since you create your own flyover. Thanks so much for the reply.
🇺🇸👍🏻😎
I love kayaking but your guys are "real" kayakers. Mine have pedals and motors. Only aboutu 24% through the vid and I'm hoping you guys have some top notch GPS devices on board. I'm surprised you guys are not interested in fishing. Would have been a good and delicious food source. Would have been tough to not catch fish. Still loving the vid. lol, ,yep you can't see shit when you're staring at mangroves. You guys must be pretty expreienced.
How do one negotiate a sharp 'planted' turn? I guess that steering with legs only can only work in gentle bends???
As the trips keep getting better, so has this video series!
We are der 3 monts a go
Sweet! Both the falls and Elephant Sands are super cool places to visit. And the ride across western Zim was amazing!
Looking at all the other comments I have to say, me too, what they said.
You captured the experience of kayaking in mangrove islands perfectly. I'm wanting to kayak fish/explore down there for an extended trip but just don't think I could navigate without getting lost. Thanks for sharing your experience!
If you load the area you'll be in into Google maps on your phone prior to the trip you can navigate that way, the GPS will work even without a cell signal.
I'm completely envious and would love to go back. Battery A-2/52 Nike Missile Site out on what is known now as Research Road was my home in the early 70's for almost a year. Even the few research buildings that are there now wasn't there when the site was used. Never got tired of the Everglades, it and surrounding areas are a fisherman's Heaven. Great video showed a lot of stuff I didn't get to see while there. Thanks. NW ga.
Great video. Wish I was there. What month were you there? And how bad was the bug problem?
We were there in March. During the day we didn't have any troubles with mosquitos at all. At night, however, they were certainly out. On a prior trip we'd just given up, even with bug mesh hoodies, and retired to our tents after dark. This time we took a little Thermacell mosquito repeller (www.rei.com/product/133424/thermacell-backpacker-mosquito-repeller). We were skeptical. It was the first time we'd used one, but literally didn't get a single bite as long as we were sitting within a few feet of it. It's the only reason there's any video after sunset. Game changing!
I have kayaked in the Everglades for more than 25 years and your video captures the experience better than any other I have seen. Fantastic! Surprised that I has so few views.
Appreciated that. Glad you enjoyed it. It's become one of our favorite places!
What video equipment do you use? It looks amazing.
Nothing fancy. Almost all of it was just shot with either a GoPro 9 or 10. A little bit was shot on iPhones (10 or 11). A few zooms of birds/dolphins were shot with an older Panasonic 4K video camera (which given its age was probably the worst video quality of the lot). Amazing what GoPros can do these days! The time lapses were GoPros, for example.
@@brent23961 I have an 8 and love it but I’m anxious to get a newer model soon so I can have multiple POVs…

I love that
Great video. Felt for the guy in the canoe though. I did Flamingo up and Whitewater bay we had strong head wind and a 1 foot chop. Not a fun 1st day out lol. Old Burt has been fed by campers, not a good thing.
Appreciate your empathy! Lol!
@@brent23961 I felt bad for the canoe guy too. Was he the guide?
@@BigCypressSwamp No guide. Just buddies. Canoe guy was ME. Painful! Went back and took a kayak. MUCH easier!
