Doug and Danika's journey into letterpress, D&D Letterpress WAMCAST #0089
On our trip to Australia, we took a train to meet Doug and Danika in Albury, NSW. We featured their story in our seventh edition of We Are Makers (Doug's hands made the front cover!) We were delighted to meet in person and spend a few days with them and their family.
Danika and Doug first crossed paths while studying design at the College of Fine Arts in Sydney, now known as University of NSW Art & Design, in 2005. Their shared journey into the world of letterpress began during a trip to the UK while they were engaged. Loving the charming markets there, they started collecting wood type blocks, nurturing their passion for letterpress.
Upon their return to Australia in 2011, they stumbled upon a 1920s hand-fed, foot-treadled Chandler & Price letterpress named 'Wendy'-as indicated by the red paint on its side-on eBay. With the fierce competition from around 50 other bidders, they successfully acquired Wendy from an old hospital slated for demolition.
Lacking experience but driven by enthusiasm, they sought expertise at a printing museum on the outskirts of Sydney. There, they met Des, a former printer who had once taught letterpress as part of a rigorous five-year apprenticeship when it was the predominant printing method. Des became a mentor and friend, generously dedicating his weekends to teaching them the intricacies of letterpress printing.

Visited Marchmont today to see the various crafts people at work. Great to see Sam and Richard in their furniture making workshop. Already have one of their rush seated chairs. Such a likeable and enthusiastic pair of craftsmen it was a joy to see their new designs and to have a chat.

Jack and Kate🙏👏Whenever I question what I'm doing studying Gold and Silversmithing at 53yo I watch an episode of yours to keep on track. This one was a cracka because that sound of tinkering David heard and followed that day is a very familiar story. Something that you love so much you can't ignore. Such a great interview wonderful and honest and yes metal is just amazing. Anyway thank you again. Keep going. !!!Thanks to David too.

Excellent stuff. More like it please. I've been fascinated by paper since I was a kid and as an auld geezer I'm definitely a SABLE when it comes to paper. I want to make some before I shuffle off. I visited Wookey Hole paper mill in the early 80s, what a magical place.
