The worlds only Donington era Norton dedicated workshop. Maintain, Repair and Refine
Norton 961 Cafe Racer... Manx inspired special.
Hi guys,
Here it is...the bike that I built with the help of my good friend Paul, over a couple of days during the Easter bank holiday, 2024.
We certainly put the hours in on this but I am very happy with the finished result, albeit, with a second iteration of the air filter box. Speaking of which, HUGE thanks to Dream Machine for helping me out with a very quick turn-around and top quality finish on all the paintwork for this project.
Anyway, I hope you enjoy the video.
All the best
Stuart

Just a method I was taught many years ago. useful if the caliper is already removed from the bike, and/or you don't have a compress to hand.

The start of a series of videos comparing a Solihull built 2022 Norton 961SP Commando against a Donington built 2018 Norton 961 Commando, with the end goal being a detailed list of what component revisions have been made and what will retro fit the Donington built bikes. Watching the video back....if you made a drinking game out of each time I say "erm", you'd soon need a stomach pump. Sorry, m...

Good Informative video Stuart. I will have to order one of these breather kits from you for my 961 SE #26. How much are these kits please?
Thanks for the videos, they're really good. I notice you have bobbins so you can safely put the bike on axle stands. My dealer says they don't exist. I've dropped my brand new bike twice trying to put it on paddock stands using the swing arm. Can you tell me where I can get bobbins from please?
...So...er..........a Commando then.
Now that’s how you build a Norton absolutely first class work :)
Great Video and a fabulous bike to finish with! You should be making them for Norton!!
That is perfect. Nice👍
Uuum uuuumm uuuuum Very nice 😜👍🏻👍🏻🙏🏻
15% upgraded springs means stiffer than original? Thx
The crankcases split vertically. Bring back the kickstart.
Tokico 6 pots for the zx6 were ripped apart using this method , Nothing else would shift em.
Very useful thanks. How do the Birmingham Nortons differ?
Hi, is the exhaust cat on the new Solihull Nortons the same as the last donny bikes?
It is a Norton of course it is all apart.
"They all do that, Sir." You forgot that one.
Thank for video . Do they have hydrolic tappets. Is possible to buy a workshop manual. Online handbook is useless!
Another great video, I am a novice when it comes to this, so its a real big help...
Great video Stu. Interesting stuff you are discovering. 👍🤔
Is the crankshaft better balanced statically and dynamically and are the main bearings and big end shells, oil feeds, oil pump much better now than the original commando engines? With modern cnc machining and iso 9001 standards of quality control and re design of areas where weaknesses occured, this could be the very best and most reliable, over engineered bomb proof bike on the market that would sell so well once the reputation for reliability is established. . Those yuppee type loaded customers will be very fussy but if the basic design is sorted, they will be the Harley of parallel twins and those fussy customers will buy them. There's no Vincent's or Brough Superior bikes now or JAP engines like pre war but quality should be even better in basic design with dimensions, materials, up to aircraft specs even if it costs. Look at Ducati, MV Augusta, Harley and Indian prices and Norton is a luxury bike manufacturer like them but at 16 k or more should be onto a winner. Like Enfield's, keep it basic, simple and easy to service and even if a basic cheaper fork, brakes and shocks are fitted like Nitron or even Hagon with a later lockhead type caliper, basic rotors but with grease nipples and a AJP type list of bearing and bush numbers so sizes and specs of oil seals and o rings, circlips can be found in other makes like koyo SKF, , NTN, roller bearing makers can be used.well done to AJP the dirt bike maker in Portugal whose management think out of the box and have made wise decisions. There have been some great bikes by husaberg, hyland and even MZ and Norden 900 which are great solid machines but some sadly failed due to lack of marketing. It's sad such great design and quality bikes weren't successful because of this. I hope CCM get more sales as they have really improved all round since the Suzuki DR650 engines R30.Nowadays the reliability of the electrics is so much better.
Crackin set of videos and answers a couple of questions regarding my 961 MkII (2017). Predominantly the battery box as I noticed a fatigue fracture on it first time the tank was off. Managed a repair without a TIG set, but now the tank is tilting to the right, presumably from the weight of the battery. Looks good that I can possibly fit the beefed up Solihull box to mine or possibly the one you are developing. The brace seems like a good idea. Also the tail piece is made of extremely brittle plastic which I repaired with fibreglass and much better now happy to send pics if your interested. Keep up the good work I have now subscribed Andy
Norton with a rocker box, why would they do that?
Great video, really helpful for a novice like me 😊
Why didn't you just rotate your phone and create a full size video? Seem's logical? :)
Seem illogical....as you'd just have areas in view each side of the engine that are not part of the subject matter. Press the full screen icon, bottom right of the screen 😉
When I surface older Commando parts, I use 320 grit on my surface plate, but I also have a piece of metal 10" x 2" x 1/4" thick and I bond on a strip pf sandpaper, that way I can use it to follow the direction of the gasket surface to get the sanding scratches in line or parallel with the surface. The scratches give the gasket "Tooth" to grip to and I would use a very thin smear of Ultra Grey RVT to bond it. I would also do the head surface too. ( being careful to keep grit out. Clean surfaces to de grease. A very flat smooth surface is the hardest surface to seal. and like when painting you need to have a freshly sanded surface for the paint to bond to. Let the RTV cure for 24 Hrs. Also retork after the first run.
Evening Stuart, how's it going. I don't remember the inside of the rocker cover looking like that
Ay up mate....yeah I'm good thanks, yourself? Nope, looks just the same as the others, presumably still made at Alucast.
Probably because the design team had the same budget to make fireworks leak free...
😆 Well you could say that, but the engine on the stand is from a 2022 bike 👀
@@motorvatedltd8048 you can take an engine out of the Norton, but you can't take the Norton out the engine
Nice video again Stu, thanks. Just had a look, Magura are German.
Another good tip. Thanks Stuart. You’ll be doing yourself out of a job soon !!! 😂
Haha well, hopefully not....but an explanation as to the problems the 961's has, goes a long way to understanding what anyone who is working on them is up against
"The best we can do is to get it back into true". That will do for me.
Meaning it's a design concern, so the best we can do with it is ensure the rocker cover is flat and use a good quality gasket.....not much else we can do realistically beyond that, unfortunately 🤷🏻♂️
Indeed, I was remarking on the poetry. A beautiful self evident truth. A mantra for life. @@motorvatedltd8048
These are brilliant videos! Don’t need therapy yet. Keep making more Stuart. Absolutely perfect explanations. Top dollar mate. 🏍️🏍️ 👍
Cheers guys! Disregard the comment on the front radius found on the 2022 bikes....it may have not been on the 2018 that I'm comparing to, but it is on the 2010 sport that's sat infront of me now. So not so much a revision as a revisiting.
Thanks for the info Stuart. A great help for the future issues which will surely come along.
No offence bandit owners 😂
Just got a new 961 SP. Can you recommend a Paddock stand for the rear end? No bobbin holes on swing arm like the Donny bikes.
That's just typical....I was going to include the swingarm in this video, but it needs a clean first, so didn't bother! Yes, no bobbin mounts....I can only assume that they removed them to stop bobbins from hitting the RH silencer. Would have made more sense to me to look at the silencer instead🤷🏻♂️ Flat footed paddock stands worry me, as the bikes can easily roll off, compared to the more positive locating bobbin and hook style. I have an Oxford stand for when I have to use it...but its not great as the platforms appear to be too far forward from the position of the stands wheels, so it's easy for the bike to roll off it.....if that makes sense? I've got a few of these in the workshop, albeit with the hooks instead, and they've been excellent. I'd probably use a front wheel chock too, just a simple one to prevent the bike rolling forward. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/191493354051?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=YgTqZ6gwRUG&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=m2kn4zrcsjw&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY
For shows, I use a rubber door stop under my front wheel.
Awesome Stu. Thanks for taking time to do this mate. Looking forward to seeing more!
Brilliant, we need you to do more of these videos Stuart 👍
Nice one matey. You are doing us all a great service. 👍😎
Really helpful video, just changed my battery, thanks for making it easier for a novice like me 👍
Do the rocker carriers threads still pull out the head too 🙄

Nice one! Lol if only……..😅
Wow very impressive riding buddy!

Have you got a close ratio box in your 7,
Bloody hell....what an awful video lol. No, standard road going zx7r gearbox. Done one tooth on front sprocket, and up 3 on the rear.
@@motorvatedltd8048 are you still running her
Yeah still own the bike. Its come a long way since this video.... Ive improved too, but not as much as the bike lol
@@motorvatedltd8048 you'll have to post some newer videos up for us to enjoy
Thanks for the tips
Hey man, how are you? Is this a 16RCS Brembo clutch master cylinder?
Top video Stuart, very clear. Cheers
Thankyou Stuart, I think a quick examination is the order of the day. First job tomorrow morning!
OK decided to fit one of Stuart’s breather kit upgrades. Always best to take counsel from an expert and look to future proof my bike! 🏍👍
Very helpful video matey. Cheers
Thank you Stuart for sharing this. You mentioned that the Dominator was slightly different. In what way? 🤔 Cheers matey Kind regards Paul
I believe the tank is different, it's an aluminium tank and attaches to the bike by the seat unit in a slightly different way. Apart from that no major differences that I have noticed on my bikes.
I'm an incompetant when it comes to stuff. Managed to do this and replace battery in one hour. So pleased with myself with help from Kevin grainger. Thanks Stuart.
