The Story of Hot Wheels: Casting a Legend

I'll be honest; this video caused me a lot of grief during a long development hell, so please watch it!
From humble beginnings as a loving father's dream to a dire downfall and a determined resurgence, the story of Hot Wheels is a long and twisty road, and one that has largely escaped thorough documentation until now.
Zero disrespect intended to Andy of Big/Little Car, who is very talented, nor the certain other UA-camr who I may appear to slate - like Top Gear, Hot Wheels (and diecast cars in general) are a subject I am very passionate about and I wish so many people wouldn't just boil it down to the Redlines and Acceleracers, as the story of Hot Wheels is much more three-dimensional than that, and I wanted to get that across.
This video is dedicated to the life and memory of Ryu Asada. One of the kindest and toughest souls I have ever known, whose and passion and love for cars remained with him to the very end.
Supposed to release in March, with patrons having seen the video a full week in advance, but as you may be able to tell from my tone of voice at the end of the video, once again some compounding circumstances put paid to that. I powered through this to make sure everything was 100% finished and polished this time around, even if I wasn't.
This is, to my knowledge, the first time anyone has told anything resembling the story of Hot Wheels in full. It took an awful lot of time to write the script and put this video together, since much of my source material was scattered across the internet. Wikipedia and even the semi-official Hot Wheels Wiki had a lot of blank/conflicting information. I hope no falsehoods have fallen through the cracks, but I cannot guarantee 100% accuracy given that a lot of Hot Wheels' official history has never been disclosed outside of the occasional production number.
Probably the craziest part is that of the 45 years Mattel spent at Hawthorne, 23 of those producing Hot Wheels, I could only find one grainy black and white photo from the late '70s across the whole internet. I also managed to find a similarly blurry satellite photo of the location dating back to 1994, but unfortunately the lot was bulldozed in 2002 to make way for a Ford dealership who relocated to the site the following year, and still stands to this day.
A special shout-out to Bruce Pascal, who along with helping me out at certain points through this video's production, unfortunately (but conclusively) debunked the urban legend that the C3 Corvette was "spoiled" by Hot Wheels, because if that were true, Harry Bradley would surely have talked about it at some point. Neither Bradley, nor any of his colleagues or successors, nor anyone else connected to Mattel has ever publicly spoken of this matter. Details between stories also conflict, in classic urban legend style, with some stating the design was smuggled out through a hollowed cane, and others suggesting the car was developed openly by Bradley and Mattel decided to "surprise" General Motors to gauge their reaction.
In truth, the C3 Corvette was already revealed to the public the previous November at the largest car show in the country. Only around 500,000 people saw the car and got up close with it, meaning that although the car may not have come out for many months thereafter, its design was hardly a secret. Add to this the fact the Mako Shark II had been out since 1965, and anyone with a remote interest in cars could have accurately predicted the appearance of the C3 without the need for corporate espionage. The trademark for Hot Wheels' Corvette was registered after this appearance.
I believe the rumours originated in the mid 1980s - 1990s, when Mattel did in fact spoil the design of the C4 Corvette due to GM expediting the full car's launch until late 1983 as a 1984 model, but after having already sent the toy company the car's design, meant tiny facsimiles of the car had already been built, packaged, and ready for sale from late 1982, when the C4 was supposed to be launched. I believe this story was corrupted, whether willingly or unwillingly, by a prominent Hot Wheels author (possibly in an early issue of the Hot Wheels Newsletter) to reflect the C3 being spoiled instead of the C4, as even now the Redlines have a mystique to them that modern Hot Wheels lack. Unfortunately, at the end of the day, evidence suggests lightning did not in fact strike twice.

Ryuji Kainoh: An Almost-Forgotten NFS Modder

Video game mods usually disappear if not closely watched, typically due to a host shutting down its website. More often than not, the original author is there to resurrect them at a moment's notice, and life goes on. But then we have Ryuji Kainoh. A car modeller who produced over 300 cars for Need For Speed III: Hot Pursuit and its immediate sequel, Need For Speed IV: High Stakes, his mods woul...
GeneRally: 40 Polygons, 20 Years Later
Переглядів 6 тис.2 роки тому
In the world of simracing, there are many titles which command a great deal of respect from the community. Grand Prix Legends, NASCAR Racing 2003 Season, and the Simbin/ISI GMotor-derived simulation games to name a few. But in amongst those, there's one which stands out. GeneRally. More or less the direct antithesis to those previously-mentioned games, GeneRally took 40 polygon cars on equally ...

Collecting means something different to everyone. For me, collecting Hot Wheels brings back cherished memories of the times I spent with my dad as a child. I'm 34 now, and thankfully, he's still by my side. Every now and then, we still find ourselves wandering down the toy aisle to pick one up together. Thanks for the documentary, never knew all the history behind these little cars.

As a child in the 1970's I strongly favored MatchBox over Hot Wheels. I remember Hot Wheels' axles would bend very easy, unlike MatchBox. Also, I thought MatchBox had better designs.

The first game was released in 2002, on my birthday (May 16). I was 32 at that time. I downloaded it few days after the release, and played it for years. I will definetely buy the sequel. It's a must-play for everyone who loves racing and gaming.

If I beat my brother in a race or just made him mad by making fun of his dumb cars he’d choose to get, he would yank a piece of track off of the set up and smack the hell outta me with it. Still loved hot wheels tho.

19:14 slight correction. The Jack Wheeler seen in the vintage Hot Wheels cartoon is actually Vert’s grandfather (and thus the father of Major Jack Wheeler). This makes sense given that the cartoon i from the 60s and World Race is produced in the early 2000s.

What a fantastic documentary. Easily the most comprehensive Hot Wheels video on UA-cam. Well done! As someone born in 2003, I missed a lot of the highlights of the brand’s first 35 years. Though I still hold a ton of nostalgia for the 2000s era of Hot Wheels, hearing the history of the brand is so interesting, and honestly, gives me an odd sense of nostalgia as well even though I wasn’t around for it. Hot Wheels will always be special to me. They provided me hours upon hours of entertainment as a kid, and even now, still remain a huge part of my life. I still collect them, still love them, and probably always will.

As a collector myself, there are soooo many things I didn't know about Hot Wheels. I had them as a kid, but in the early 70's I didn't imagine they'd be worth anything (like comic books). I still have some of the ones from my childhood, but of course they are NOT in great condition. It's only been about 4 or 5 years that I've been collecting. The majority are in blister packs in "tracks" on my wall. I made them from plywood and tracks (for ceiling tile). I prob. have over 200 and yes, some celebrity cars. K.I.T.T., General Lee, Jetsons, BTTF Deloreon, Ecto-1, etc. Some Flash and WW thrown in for good measure. This was an excellent video and I know took quite some time making it, so THANK YOU!!!

In the 80’s, my favorite was mostly matchbox. Their detail was incredible. And I guess I’m into that. But today, I own a lot of Hotwheels because they choose the fun cars. Not quite the detail. But definitely the hottest models.

Matchbox still makes very well detailed models of somewhat obscure or sometimes boring. I just bought one that is a Volvo 244 model. Because I owned one but also because it’s funny to make a toy of such a boring car. But the details are amazing. Down the the painted tail lights, head lights, and even the license plate. I only own about 3-5 Matchboxes. Hot wheels does an excellent job at making the “fun” cars. Cars I would want to own. And that’s all that I buy, but I have 100’s of them. Anything from Porsches to JDM cars to muscle cars. Not one boring model. Well, maybe the Volvo 840, but that was based on a a race car.

I don't know if it was a hot wheels product but I had a c5a galaxy transporter plane. It was awesome. One of my favorite toys of all time. It had a button on it that when pressed made a sound like a plane throttling up. When u let off the button it throttled down. A really nice touch.

I loved the hot wheels monster jam range from 2000-2018 and hot wheels monster TRUCKS from 2018-now and since one of mattel's lowest years both brand wise and financially imo even with thomas and friends they seem to be doing better in 2019 after mattel hot wheels launched their own line of monster trucks without monster jam after spin master took over the brand, they've been doing amazing over the years and they have one thing mattel doesn't... customer feedback, matt el also revamped the lazily redesigned thomas and friends wood for a few years only to go back to the drawing board in 2022 the motorized and push along ranges had their changes over the years eventually having become compatible with each other in 2019 with trackmaster 2 motorized and push along formerly known as adventures and take n play, in 2021 thomas and friends has been rebooted into thomas and friends all engines go after the slow years for bwba they seem to be doing pretty good for a reboot if given the chances, hot wheels have crossed over with their other brands including barbie, he man, thomas the tank engine, uno, monster high even hasbro's transformers i never thought i'd see the day. I still collect hot wheels, hot wheels monster trucks and thomas and friends merchandise to this day, do i plan stopping anytime soon? The world may never know... thanks for reading this comment
