Terrace housing - 8 frame to 10 frame
After seeing the swarm cells last Monday, today I added a super to the 8 frame hive before we leave for vacation tomorrow. I don't have any more 8 frame boxes so I added a small piece of wood to the bottom of the 10 frame to allow them to use all 10 frames. I could've added one to the top to use the 8 frame feeder/lid but I just swapped those out with the 10 frame versions from the robbed hive. I topped off the feeder since we'll be gone a couple weeks. I also added a queen excluder below the new super. I want to give them room to store resources but I'm hoping they'll store those in the new super (once they've drawn out the empty frames). They may still swarm but I think I've done all I can to prevent it while I'm gone.

New jacket day...and swarm cells
Переглядів 3914 днів тому
Today I was test driving my new jacket/veil thanks to the KSU grant. I really liked it. It's ventilated so not any hotter than the long sleeve shirt/undershirt combo but much more protection. Also, the u-shaped veil gave more than adequate viewing...no less than the round veil. Now the bees. The good...they'd walked thru (used?) the ApiGuard from last time so I installed the 2nd round of treatm...
Bees are stupid but I'm more stupider

Hard lessons learned this week. First I lost the other hive to robbing. Today, I made the mistake of inspecting when I was exhausted...no sleep, too much drinking the night before, and a 5 hour ride in the legs the day before. The bees were angry and so was I. The queen has moved most of her brood work into the super. That looked fine except the wonky comb between the feeder and super. The unca...

I noticed lighter traffic on the original hive in the last week while the new hive was flying like crazy. Today, almost none so I opened it up ahead of 2 week schedule. Unfortunately they're all gone...literally less than a handful of bees in the super and deep. The full super I left was completely empty with the wax chewed to bits. Apparently the full super I left a couple weeks ago wasn't eno...

Solid field with tons of TxRH and ZWS as well as Heros, Fount and KBB guys. As Hans Solo, my goal was to stay near the front but not on...i.e. chase the chaser. Both TxRH and ZWS kept attacking but with ZWS looking to stack the break, TxRH kept bringing it back. With a couple laps to go, TxRH sat up their train for Marco. I wanted to hop on his wheel but it was a knife fight with 3 guys to do s...

New Hive Several chunks of drone brood comb between the feeder and the super. Normally this is annoying but I'd planned to scrape some drone brood anyway to check for mites. Pulling the feeder off skipped the scraping step. Good news is I only saw one mite in 10-15 exposed drones. The super I added a couple weeks ago was in good condition with most frames drawn out. If we weren't in the dearth,...

Charles and I lined up with a field of 20. We had a one outta towner Cat 1 (Sean) we knew to watch and he didn't disappoint. He attached a couple laps after my early attack. Both Charles and I responded along with a Heros rider. We worked well together and had a decent gap quickly. With 10-15 minutes left, Mr. Cat 1 started attacking the group. I got on his wheel but didn't want to work (or cou...

New Hive Orders of the day were a basic inspection and refilling the feeder. I added a super last time so I was hoping they'd pulled it out. They have pulled several frames and filled with brood, nectar and pollen. They also added some burr comb in the stupid feeder again...not as much as before. We found the queen in the brood chamber. Unfortunately tons of wonky comb...some so wonky there's a...

Short one today. I only looked at the small hive. I wanted to leave the big hive alone for a bit now that I know there's a good mated queen. Today's goals were remove the entrance reducer and add the feeder back (with a mod to hopefully eliminate the damn burr comb). Successful on both fronts and I found the queen. I'd brought the queen excluder and a super just in case but they've still only p...

Charles and I lined up with ~50 others on my favorite course. I've won it twice and got 2nd twice when it was a 2/3 race. With Charles to help, I thought we really had a chance to win it again. The race was super active with break after break going away. I made an attempt to get in a couple but the mix was never right and everything kept getting brought back. With less than 10 laps to go, I mad...

New Hive Stupid feeder. The feeder hole was completely full of brood and nectar again. What a mess. We pulled it off and won't be putting it back on until I fill in most of the with wood. We're not cleaning up that mess every time. The rest of the hive was in good shape minus some wonky comb. We found the queen and she's laying well. We did have a few SHB but nearly all were stuck in the Beetle...

First time doing this course. It used to be the old TNW course and I could see why. Very fun and somewhat technical with a couple decreasing radius turns and a punchy uphill finish. Much smaller field than yesterday but still top heavy with Chad, JJ, Richter, etc. A break was sure to go up the finish kicker and sure enough the top guys were gone early. I got in with a chase with 5 others. We sp...

This a course for a skinny race horse and I'm a donkey. Too much elevation for me. Add that to multiple stacked teams and I'm in the deepest of waters. Everyone knew a break of JJ, Chad, a ZWS rider and a Mack rider was likely to go. I can't hang with that group so my goal was to try to get into a chase group. I made an effort to do that both early and late but neither worked. Meh in the field ...

This course wants a break. With 3 teams (ETP, ZWS, Sustainable) of 2-3, that break was definitely going to happen. My goal was to ignore the first couple attempts with everyone fresh. Then I wanted to try to get into a break with most of the teams present when others were maybe tired. First try failed since it was just an ETP rider and myself. Later I got in a break with all teams present and t...

First, only my second year so you could fill a library with what I don’t know. So thanks for everyone’s thoughts. No queen cells so I’m not sure they swarmed. Second, I didn’t see the activity that would’ve indicated robbing the last couple weeks. I think the mite count got too high and they absconded, cleaning out the honey before they left. I should’ve treated after I pulled the honey so hard lesson learned. There were only maybe 20-30 bees around so no saving this one. I froze the frames and will start over next spring.

Swarmed, failed to make a queen, died. The wax is from getting robbed out after the hive collapsed.

If you see eggs, the queen is there. I don't think you need to obsessively clean off the burr comb, because you are just going to accidently kill bees, and you end up spending too much time with the hive open. I prefer a jar top feeder myself so all they can do is propalise the openings from underneath. It allows you to add more syrup without opening the hive and disturbing them.

First, let me say it is always heartbreaking when you find your bees are gone. It has happened to me for several reasons. I have had a hive hit with pesticide, I have had a hive destroyed by wax moths, I have had them just disappear mysteriously. Now, I would like to point out a few things I found odd about your inspection. First, you did not put your frames back the way they started. In this case less important since they were gone, but in most cases, not good practice. The bees arrange things the way they like, and messing with the arrangement can actually kill brood. Second, why get the smoker going so strong when it is obvious that there is nothing left, though I did like your technique. Third, I would have liked to see the bottom under the brood box. Was there a layer of dead bees? What sort of debris was there? It is a bit late for a split, but it isn't the end of the world. You can feed your other hive and now they have less competition for resources nearby. Two, maybe salvage what you can from the dead hive, but put some frames in there. Sometimes a swarm will just move in if the hive is available. It smells like bees, so put some frames in there and just have a brood box. let it sit. A single brood box is the right size for an interested swarm to investigate. Just think of this ordeal as a learning experience and don't give up.

You shouldn’t have been let back into the race given you had 6 minutes recovery and approximately 2.5 free laps. Not to mention you restarted when the break passed and not when the field passed.

I had to stop using the oil in traps , I always forgot to remove at least one and i would spill oil on my bees, I started going to the swiffer sheets and they are working great.

I did both the traps and the swiffer sheets last year (first year as a beek). I had the same problem with spilling until I filled them much less with a small wash bottle. I'm less of a fan of the swiffer since the bees drag it to the bottom board and block the entrance.

What are your thoughts on the plastic frames, have you been using them for awhile? Are there pros and cons that you have with them? Been thinking about trying them, just haven't pulled the trigger.

    • @heavymechanic2
      @heavymechanic2 10 місяців тому

Plastic frames feel flimsy and I had one break when it was stuck to the super above. The grooves in the end bars are a place for beetles to hide as I was told. The frames are OK you just need to be careful with them but I prefer wood. I just bought 100 plastic frames because of the cost, Pierco and Acorn is what I used last summer and no regrets, even a wood frame can break.
