SP stands for Public Service. Your Airmail stamp was issued in 1946. My favorite Luxemburg stamps are the Officials that have the word "Officiel" puched in perfins. They are noted but not listed in Scott. I am trying to get a full set but am still missing three. Caritas means charity in Latin.

With Japan during our school's exchanges my family collected the two types of stamps. Used stamps from our correspondences and mint gotten as farewell gifts. My favorite is the mints as they are almost all in complete sets as we received them.

Interesting. Had no idea folks would collect pencils. 🤷‍♂️ As a retired engineer and part time calligrapher-pencil artist, I use pencils all the time. My pencil variety is based on the hardness scale of the lead within the pencil-not the advertising. Fountain pen was most intriguing to me. The article you read is still very valid today. I’d check out the condition of the fountain pen, have it evaluated/restored, and sell it on eBay. Lots of folks are interested in “vintage” fountain pens. Good luck. 👍🏻

The "State of Oman" stamps are not even CTO:s, they were printed by a private person and are considered illegal by Oman. No state with the name "State of Oman" has ever existed (it was and is called Sultanate of Oman).

hello, the blue stamp at 11:58 is from Tuscany, not Sardinia. I suggest you to use the Sassone catalog instead of the Scott one (I'm Italian and I'm a collector of italian philately, if you need information or advice feel free to ask)

I collect worldwide up to 1969. I won a couple stock sheets of AMG / ftt Italian stamps at one of my last stamp club meetings for 50 cents. That filled quite a few spots in my Scott album:) I also don't have any complete pairs of parcel post stamps. I don't imagine I'll ever get those pages filled. Italy really did produce a lot of gorgeous stamps:) Thanks for sharing:)

Pneumatic Post were letters sent in tubes through pipes using air to make a faster delivery. Although other countries used a pneumatic system I believe that Italy was the only country to issue stamps specifically for this purpose. FTT means Free Teritory of Trieste and you will find those under the Trieste section of Italy. The large set near the top at 10:21 is informally known as "Italy at Work" as it depicts various occupations. Just an FYI Eritrea is pronounced like (Air-a-tree-a). The main problem with Italian stamps is that a lot of the early issues are poorly centerted.

I do not collect CTO'S but I would never disparage anyone who did. Collectors are free to collect whatever they want and whatever they can afford. Just an FYI Sharjah is pronounced just like it is spelled not like Sahara. The ones from Spain and the Latin American countries are generally called remainders by collectors rather than CTO's and have lines across the face of the stamp. I do collect remainders. I always get a kick out of these Trucial States that are 99.9% Muslim yet issue Christmas stamps every year because they know that collectors will buy them.

Thank you for an interesting video, Stamp Sleuth. I have been trying to get info about CTOs for a while now, among other things because I cannot decide whether I should collect them or not. As I understand e.g. they are not allowed to be used in exhibitions. The latest I could find out is that one gets two types of CTOs. The one is the CTO cancellation of UPU approved "real" stamps also used for postage, thus one get a mint, postally used and CTO cancelled stamp of the same stamp. However, other CTOs are stamps just printed for selling to dealers and collectors and which has no postally used counterpart. I think there is a distinct difference between these two kinds of CTOs and how to think about them.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on CTOs. I collect stamps from a number of former communist block countries. In 90% of the cases I have all three - Mint, Used and CTO. As you mentioned there are unscrupulous dealers who will sell washed CTO as used. I have been duped this way once. Fortunately the packet only cost a few cents per stamp. Greetings from a sort of neighbour as I am in Creston BC.

I bought a Scott album that covered worldwide in the early '50s. It was almost completely full of stamps, but I was a bit disheartened to discover that the majority were CTOs. I enjoy stamps for the learning experience...so I wasn't that upset. There is no way I could have afforded buying all those stamps to fill the album. I figured the time someone put into that made it worth it, and they were all nicely mounted. The cost of the mounts alone must have been a ton. I can always swap the CTOs out with officially used or mint stamps, should I come across them. In the meantime, it's a joy to peruse through it and learn more about what was going on in different countries during that time.

I am also interested in CTO's but only from the trucial states in the middle east.AJMAN, UM UL QUWAIN , etc. I wonder if they printed CTO FDC? anyone...I refuse to get the communist countries cto's no matter what. The quest is when did CTO's begin....The 1950's after the war...or? Another facet is the 'stamps 'that have Kings and Queens of England, Flags of the world, Coat of Arms, etc What would you call those..they are not cancelled either.

Good afternoon. Great video. Sometimes, cancellation of stamps is done in order to reduce the cost. In Russia, even during the Soviet era, there was a large number of philatelists, including children. They could not always buy expensive stamps, so already cancelled or used stamps were sold. Even now, in Russia, stamps are divided into three categories: clean, used or cancelled. The cheapest ones are considered to be used and passed through mail and washed envelopes. During the Soviet era, many countries of the socialist bloc sold stamps for union purposes, which were mostly used or cancelled. Now, collectors are in the majority.

Cto can be very attractive but also very frustrating as you cannot hinge them because of the gum. They are usually low value but have to be mounted and mounts are very exspensive.

I generally despise CTO stickers. When a government issues these with no intent of their use for postal purposes, they are, IMO, not postage stamps. They're stickers. Furthermore, many are/were produced featuring a subject/topic that has nothing to do with the culture or history of the country. I usually give 'em away. Can I recommend the Bird Stamp Society to you. It is only £20 per year to join and it has a really interesting magazine containing articles on how its members collect stamps and on various aspects of the topical hobby. It has a website too with lots of interesting information. Members are from across the world too as stamp collecting knows no boundaries. Many beautiful stamps are illustrated as well as all new issues featuring birds which are identified for you long before they appear in any catalogue. I really enjoy belonging to it and finding out more from other bird stamp collectors giving me fresh ideas for my own collection.

I would be inclined to organise your stock books in alphabetical country order as I did when I started out collecting bird stamps. It will be much easier to see which stamps you own already when considering buying new stamps in future. But that is my personal preference and you should do whatever you want. When you have a lot more stamps you can arrange them in an album by species or family instead. There is an excellent book you can buy called Collect Birds on Stamps which was last published by Stanley Gibbons in the 1990s. It shows or lists every bird stamp ever issued and is somewhere you can mark off the stamps you own against it. I find it invaluable especially as it identifies every bird to species level at the same time saving me a lot of work. It is sometimes wrong though but only on rare occasions

As a birdwatcher I love stamps with birds. So I really enjoyed your stamp collection. I started off collecting them in 2 stock books like you but I kept them in alphabetical country order so it was easier to see which stamps you already owned and what were already duplicates which I then put elsewhere. But I collect all stamps of the world as well and my house is now full of them! A fateful day came when I was attending an auction a few hundred miles from home where a massive bird collection came up for sale in 32 volumes! It was amazing and contained thousands of bird stamps which were all different. But the stamps were arranged according to taxonomy and every species had its own page of stamps with some popular species like Common Kingfisher having multiple pages there were so many stamps showing it. It was a mixture of mint and used but had a high percentage of mint stamps which are considerably more valuable than used generally speaking. It had a reserve set on it of £1000 but no one wanted to buy it. I think this was because it was no use to dealers like that for potential resale and it was a lot of money for a collector to pay. But with my interest in birds I succumbed and bought it for £1150 including the required commission payable. Now I definitely was a bird stamp collector. What I particularly liked about the collection was that a huge amount of hard work had already been done for me by the original owner. The stamps had been sorted already and mounted up on their respective individual species pages which were arranged showing all members of a family together. Best of all they had hand drawn the distribution of the bird in question on a little world map at the top of each page. So I feel proud to own something like this now which is a joy to look at. I have added a few stamps to it since but it was nearly complete already up to 2000 with just a few older and often more expensive stamps missing. I have started to add my own customisation to it now by starting to write the date and place I first saw that bird from my own birdwatching holidays. This will allow me to merge my happy memories of seeing the bird with beautiful artwork of the stamps themselves. It is all about doing whatever you want and getting the most enjoyment you can from your hobby.

Does the number in the middle of the precancel represent a particular company or a small town? I started collecting US Postal Stationary last year. So far I have been collecting mint whole envelpes back to the 1920's. When I get beyond that I will probably have to settle for cut squares. You keep saying Post Cards. Do Canadians not make a distinction between Post Cards and Postal Cards like we do here in the US?

What you are calling an ear rest , it looks to me like a shoulder rest. On your WW1 picture there is also one black soldier. I would think that would make it unusual.

I don't see any point in spending even this much time looking through a collection like this. Only a few stamps from Czechoslovakia have high value, including a few early airmails, a few semis, and a very small number of other stamps. The vast majority of Czech stamps, all issued in the 20th century after all, don't have much value. Look for those high value stamps in the collection, and you can ignore all the others. Turning the pages, that should take almost no time to do. I didn't see any of these stamps, so as someone who has a Czech collection, I can say this collection is somewhat of a beginner's collection and is worth very little. The only other possible value might be if the collector had an enormous number of the common stamps in very good condition year after year. Some collectors would like that to fill many empty spaces in their album especially if many were MNH. Since it's quickly obvious that neither of these applies to this collection, it's just not worth much. This should take any experienced stamp person just a few moments to determine. If you aren't sure about a country just browse the catalogue for a few minutes and look for the higher value stamps -- usually in a country's early years. Then look for those stamps in the collection. Also, if I can say this, it made me very uncomfortable to see you running your hands over the pages as you were. I realize they're in plastic page holders, so no damage, but if you got into that habit, with a different collection you could do some real damage -- and you'd make that collector very upset.

Wow! You find the most interesting things. I knew that the whole sports cards industry such as hockey and baseball cards started off as tobbacco cards such as those you showed. I also knew about the military uniforms cards that were very popular. All those cards looked to be in very nice condition for their age. But never heard anything about the albums. Those must be pretty rare. Thank you for showing these!

Oh I like. I do not collect any cards but this is enough to make me think about it.
