This channel is for me a repository of Grand Canyon river history. It was made possible on UA-cam by:
the Grand Canyon River Outfitters Association - www.gcroa.org/
Grand Canyon River Guides - www.gcrg.org/
and by OARS Inc. - www.oars.com/
The channel contains, among other things, the seed footage of what later became Grand Canyon River Guides' "River Runners Oral History Project."

Part of an historic vhs tape I digitized for Bob Dye (a legendary Grand Canyon boatman who runs motors and dories for Grand Canyon Expeditions): this is a Bud Rusho film made just after the high water of 1983 jeopardized Glen Canyon Dam. Copyright 1984 by Bud Rusho and the Bureau of Reclamation.
Thanks for posting these, Lew. I'm enjoying hearing these stories. (When do you post your story?).
There is _so much_ wisdom and experience related here.
Nice to see people who learned to enjoy themselves,....BEAUTIFUL
Awesome
One of the best clips.
Thanks for the upload Lew! - Dylan
This is incredible, I hope this footage gets used to make some edited versions that capture this is a more polished version.
Read the book Brave the Wild River and had to watch the video of Cutter! Wow! It is wonderful to have her oral history on record.
I’d like to see Crystal at that level! Best story ever-RIP The Factor… Great video!
OMG Dierker! Love that guy, he always had a smile and warm embrace for me, miss seeing all the faces of my friends and colleagues. Thanks so much for putting all this together Lew, it is a blast from past and I'm loving your videos. LOVED when he jumped out of Georgie's cake! What an amazing party that was, so grateful to be able to make it there and celebrate with everyone.
Great content Lew!
this is pretty much exactly what i imagined him to look like while listening to the emerald mile
What a gem of a human.
Came here after finishing the Emerald Mile to see the man himself. So rad. RIP Factor
Oh my dear heavens!! Sandy!!! Three decades later, I’d know that joyous smile anywhere!! Hi from Tamela!!
Great video Lew. Awesome to hear it from the horses mouth, so to speak. All you boatmen can tell a great story!
That's Bob Rigg in the Clyde Beatty hat, a long time family friend.
If you haven’t read the The Emerald Mile by Kevin Fedarko, read it! You will not be disappointed. It’s an incredible story!
Read "A Walk In The Park" too.
Great fun, thanks. I flipped in Crystal in 84, another very big water year, but not as big as 83. Now 50 years later, so glad I was there.
great interiew. amazing to hear from him
Tackling the things you like least explains many things about Alistair and casts a new light on being tackled by Alistair.
Epic. I've long been curious how Kenton's philosophy running a Dory intermingled with Georgie's philosophy of plowing over big holes in the Queen Mary. Didn't disappoint! It would have been fun as hell to ride with either of them, if I'm honest. I'd love to have a time machine. R.I.P. Kenton and Georgie. You know what they say about legends.
I've spent a lot of time rafting big rivers in Idaho, and it's impossible to explain how fun you can have to someone who's never done it. Being exposed to the river community and mingling with it, you will find a family that you never knew existed.
So cool that Brian was later a raft guide and portrayed a main character in the critically acclaimed "Into The Wild" in 2007.
Best photo I’ve ever had taken, was by Brian. And a Great guy! 😎
I may have been in that crowd and ready to run Crystal in ‘83.😎
Brilliant footage! Thank you
Great interview, as always!! Thanks, Lew!!
Kindred spirits! What draws us to the Canyon, keeps us there, in our minds and spirits? The sound of the Raven, the ring of a hiking stick on the trail, rocks tumbling down the creek. I am almost 70 and have been in the Canyon since 1972. I got to help build the trail crew bunk house at (Indian) Supai Garden half a life time ago. Love the place and always will.
Not sure what brought me here, I don’t know this fella nor the name. I researched a bit before commenting so I know who he is a bit better now. I’m glad a watched this. What a character. Going on my first private GC trip next June, maybe that’s why this came up.
We were sleeping on the boats at the Ferry and we were waked up by a truck and flashlights and a couple friends. It happened so fast and off they went.
Shoemaker-Levy-9 comet...
What cool, under appreciated footage! She is such a legend, I would give so much to be able to have a conversation with her. I wish the interviewer was better and actually interacted with her.
Love this guy! Wish he’d find me in an eddy in the canyon and fly through a drop me a couple of cases of cheep beer! Love ya Martin.
Thanks Gorgie and Lew. There never was a mold. No mold could have cast her. Let alone one to break.
Can't believe I'm only. The fourth like on this. Bless ya Gorgie. Let's rock a Coors for the grand old lady!
This is so great. Thanks. Emerald Mile in detail. Fascinating!
There is a book out about the story of her life. Recommended.
What’s the title?
The title is Woman of the River: Georgie White Clark Whitewater Pioneer. Enjoy!
Badass!
Legend
Thanks for this!
Such a great interview. Dan Lindemann got my family into river running. I remember seeing Brad on the river just about every summer I was in the river.
Joan rowed one of her father's boats down the San Juan on my very first river trip ever. It was in the late 70's.
Thanks for sharing. I remember seeing Brian when I was swamping for Sleight Expeditions back in the day. I did a private trip with Jim David in '83. Great guys to know.
Did the Grad Canyon with Brian in 1974 and it changed my life. Thanks Brian and Dick.
Suggest getting this translated on subtitles. This is actually awesome period capture.
I'm pretty sure he passed away in the fall of 2000.
Tad Nichols was born in Ohio, in 1911... When did he die?
he lived til the 2000, he's a sweet man and the best great grandfather. his photography has been passed down. his adventurous heart as well. his wife passed a few years or so after. his grand daughter continues his passions
I dnt see him in movies anymore....
My dad helped build dories for Mexican Hat Expeditions. He hung out with Bob and Jim Rigg, Norm and Doris Nevilles, Katie Lee. I was lucky to ride in a dory named Mother. I think that was the name. Anyway, never liked baloney boats as we called them. Glad I happened upon your video.
Thanks Jeanette. Glad that worked for you.
