Actually there is a Cold Chisel version of this song in 1980 at the Manly Vale Hotel, but this is not it. In the Chisel one, Don Walker sings a part of it. This is from The Andy Durant memorial concert in 1980. Maybe you can correct the title? Andy Durant was a guitarist, and played harmonica and sang back up mainly for a band called The Stars. He does sing lead on a song called West is the Way. He also wrote a whole bunch of songs. Andy passed away at the age of 24 or 25 from Melanoma. The Stars formed in Adelaide, and this too is where Jimmy grew up in his young days after arriving from Scotland. This whole concert is on YT on two channels. The whole live concert is on a channel by Casey Cooper, and the individual songs on Laneway Music. I listen to the whole, concert a lot. ❤❤❤❤ I found the Stars from my love of everything Jimmy Barnes. 2:03 both Ian and Jimmy are humming 2:25 Ian sings the first verse 2:56 the whole band is singing 3:33 Mick Pearling (lead singer of the band Stars that Andy was in) 4:52 Mossy’s solo 5:00 Broderick Smith sings the third voice. He was the lead singer of the Dingoes The two men either side of Brod, are Richard Clapton in the black leather jacket, and Billy Rogers. Billy has played sax with Chisel sometimes. My knowledge of the making of this waiata (song) Written and composed by Hohepa Tamehana no Tuhoe for a group of young maori artist who were apart of a tv show called Nga Manutioriori in the late 90's early 2000's It was recorded with the top 16 Maori singers from the tv show (i think) and produced by Music producer Phil Fuemana who owned the record label U.P.R Urban Pacifika Records and had the number hit How Bizzard in 7 countrys, since then its become an anthem here in Aotearoa. The first time it was sung fully in Te Reo Maori (Maori music)was by 3 sisters from Masterton, NZ (shout out to the Martin Sisters) and was on a show called " He Wai " which show cased maori music fully in Te Reo and on mainstream television TV2 (this is when barriers start breaking through maori music / Maoridom) I happened to be apart of that show twice when i was young 15year old as apart of a school boy band group C.P.T.T. It was then Hohepa Tamehana the writer and composer of He Kakano ahau took us on as an Maori RnB trio and become our manager, he renamed us Koha Kii (which means Spoken Gifts) and signed us up with a new image and signed us to the U.P.R record label which we were the First to record an Album in Te Reo Maori by a Male Maori Rnb trio at the time. We were also apart of a Gifted & Maori tour along with another artists and groups from all over NZ, to name afew Verse 3 who were once Maia3 from Tauranga Girls College, WVVLC a Maori hip hop Rnb group from Waitahanui and then 4 brothers from South Auckland called Chapter a hip hop rap group. we were all signed to the record label. An compilation album called Gifted and Maori was produced by U.P.R which featured a re recording of the song He Kakano Ahau (Born of Greatness) ft Koha Kii, Verse 3, WVVLC w/lil tyrone aka big whetu and also ft Hohepa Tamehana as well. And now the song has been recorded again 20yrs later By Stan Walker. I hope this is helpful. All 3 versions of the song are all totally different which is miharo (amazing) if you want to listen to the Gifted & Maori version of He Kakano Ahau you can just go into my channel under the Koha Kii album playlist cos the song ft on our album aswel.
