    I have the same problem with balancing woodworking and life in general. Luckily my wife understands and my kids are grown. Family functions and weather are my struggle points because I don't have a shop to work out of. So do you feel like 6 inches would be enough board width for a large round table? I’m on the fence about buying a used 6 inch jointer (wanting to upgrade my bench top jointer) or saving up and just getting an 8 inch. With the round table being my big project that I have planned.

    • @scottreynoldsbuilder
      @scottreynoldsbuilder 4 місяці тому

      You can get by with the 6" if you don't think you will need the 8" for other projects. For a large round table, you would probably start with 6 or 8" boards, glue them together at a width that would fit through your planer (maybe 12") to make them all the same thickness. Then, keep them as level as possible with biscuits and glue into the table top. Then, use a router circle cutting jig for your circle. The added length after upgrading from a benchtop jointer would be needed. Bigger is better if you have the space but you can do a big circle table with the 6".

    • @TheRealDill93

      @@scottreynoldsbuilder thanks for the reply man. That’s exactly what I was thinking. I don’t really wanna drop the money on a brand new 8. And you don’t see a ton of used 8s around. Not here where I’m at anyway. Found a pretty nice jet 6 for sale near me I think ima pick up. Thanks again

    This video found its way on my feed. Went ahead and sub to see what might come out. Nice to see smaller channels come to life. You have tons more room than I have. Any tasks I want you to do I need to drag it out of the garage Why do you have tape on the side of the track saw?

    • @scottreynoldsbuilder
      @scottreynoldsbuilder 4 місяці тому

      Thanks for watching, and thanks for subscribing! The tape is to cover the arbor nut opening. It keeps dust and chips from flying out, so the dust collection works better. There are 3d printing shops that make covers that pop in and out. Check out @wittworks and his website.

    • @scottreynoldsbuilder
      @scottreynoldsbuilder 4 місяці тому

      Thanks! That's awesome to hear! There are a lot of ways to get by without a jointer, but it is nice to have one if you have the space. If you're shopping for one and you want to remove the guard, make sure the bed is still flat. Some have a piece that sticks up and blocks the table because of the design.

    • @MJLWoodWorks
      @MJLWoodWorks 4 місяці тому

      @@scottreynoldsbuilder Good to know!! thanks! I currently use a 9 foot long piece of square aluminum tubing that I attach to my table saw fence for jointing. I put the concave portion, with both front and back of the board, against the fence and run it through to get a straight edge on one side, flip it and do it for the other side. Works pretty good most of the time.

  • @vulgarwoodworks
    @vulgarwoodworks 4 місяці тому

    I think edge jointing is where a lot of users get tripped up. It's certainly easier to see low spots on the face, but edges are where a panel goes wrong. The "bookmatched" method is great, but a hand plane is an absolute must to get dialed in. I'd recommend heading down to W. Sac and check out the Felder dealer. The Hammer A3-41 is a beast. For what you'd pay for an 8" or wider joiner, you'll get two machines with 16" of capacity. For most small shop woodworkers, that's plenty of capacity and with a small footprint

    • @scottreynoldsbuilder
      @scottreynoldsbuilder 4 місяці тому

      Good point on the edge jointing. I have a good friend who did that exact thing with the Felder machine. I still need to go over and see it in action. He seems to really like it. Thanks!

    • @vulgarwoodworks
      @vulgarwoodworks 4 місяці тому

      @scottreynoldsbuilder ask for Fergus. If you decide to go with Hammer, wait until June/July. Felder runs a yearly 30% off sale around the time of the big woodworking trade show in Vegas. Be ready to wait 6-10 weeks to take delivery

    I'm looking at making something almost identical out of walnut. Does the reinforcement piece help it to not sag when someone sits on it? That's the part I'm worried about...

    • @scottreynoldsbuilder
      @scottreynoldsbuilder 5 місяців тому

      It didn't sag, I think the reinforcement piece did help. If i did this again, I would go a little thicker with the lumber. 8/4, probably or 6/4. That might depend on how wide it is going to be. I did a bench out of walnut that was 6/4 to start, and it didn't need the reinforcement piece.

    Another great project Scott, brilliant idea to glue on the new piece, I would never have thought to do that. Filling the tiny gaps in the box joints, that’s my go to method also, some of my final finish mixed with same species sawdust, foolproof and never failed me yet. With the iron method, I use a wet cloth placed on the wood and a dry iron, I find it produces more steam. Keep up the great work, your honesty and humor are refreshing. 👍🏻 PS glad I didn’t have to watch another roundover.

    • @scottreynoldsbuilder
      @scottreynoldsbuilder 6 місяців тому

      Thank you! I've heard end grain can be like an end of a straw that will suck in glue or water. It was worse than I was expecting. I might try to spray some shellac to seal the end grain before gluing next time. It works for me when using cya glue to fill small voids.

    Great piece of work, Scott. Thanks for sharing your progress and whoopsies 😊. To me, is looks a bit flimsy. What is your impression after the build - is it rigid enough to sit on and being used in th everyday? I am planning on making something similar, though I intend to have a brace between the two sides that will also work as a shoe rack.

    • @scottreynoldsbuilder
      @scottreynoldsbuilder 6 місяців тому

      Thanks! This bench felt pretty solid, even with 2 adults sitting on it. The box joints add a lot of extra glue surface for more strength. It should be strong enough for normal use. I have used a stretcher before on another design. Turning that into a shoe rack sounds like a cool idea!
