I had the extremely good fortune while Visiting Erv Wilson in the late 1970s, to sit at the side of George's custom Scalatron, while he played it for me. He started with a demo of his then-new 17+2 unequal temperament. The music was fascinating and as I followed his various ingenious modulations, my head moved around in space to follow them. Then suddenly, he pressed one of the tuning buttons and began playing a different kind of music in a different tuning. Immediately, without intending to do so, I sat up straight with perfect posture. My breathing became deep and effortless. My vision and mind became crystal clear. I felt fantastic! I said "George, what did you do?" He smiled and said "Oh, that's Helmholtzian Just" and then he switched to yet another tuning and musical idiom. I involuntarily slumped in the chair, My breathing became constricted, my eyes crossed and I had trouble thinking clearly. With effort, I said "George, push the other button!" He went back to Helmholtz and I got instant relief. This was my initiation into what Ivor Darreg called the "moods" of different tunings.

Though I could tell the difference between the Wurlitzer and Hohner pianos, I still think they kind of sound similar. At least, both are built with metal reeds a stone generators. It’s largely that Hohner utilized brass reeds while Wurlitzer utilized steel ones (unless I’m mistaken).

Dedico con ironia questo video a tutti coloro che reputano Jon Lord il n. 1 sull'Hammond e alle loro stupide classifiche sui 20 - 40 -50 - 100 tastieristi migliori del mondo. Mi baso sull'esecuzione che Rachel ha individuato come a lei più consona, cioè la versione di Tarkus proveniente dall'LP "Welcome back my friends...". Il motivo di questa scelta è che nel video vengono mostrate le abilità tecniche di Rachel, ma con riferimento al grande compositore ed esecutore delle parti più complesse di questo capolavoro che è ovviamente Keith Emerson, del quale però non esistono filmati così egregiamente "visibili", come invece si possono notare in questo meraviglioso video. E tutto ciò senza andare a scomodare quel che di incredibile c'è stato negli LP successivi del trio Emerson, Lake & Palmer. Ecco: Jon Lord e/o qualsiasi altro tastierista sarebbero stati in grado di comporre/eseguire musica, fraseggi, scale particolari, avere conoscenza profonda di famosi compositori "classici", etc., al pari di colui che personalmente e unitamente a chi lo stima, considero l'outsider? Quindi cari "classificatori" scrivete: n. 1 Keith Emerson, gli altri a chilometri di distanza, compreso il più scarso di tutti che a mio parere è Richard Wright. Saluti.
