The Secular Requiem is a large-scale work by the British composer Russell Pascoe with text assembled by Anthony Pinching. It comprises fourteen sections within five movements and exists in two orchestrations; the first for orchestra, choir, and contralto and baritone soloists, the second for organ and percussion accompaniment. Departing from the liturgical requiem form, Pascoe's work combines non-religious texts from the likes of John Donne, Dylan Thomas, Kakinomoto no Hitomaro, Walt Whitman, Rabindranath Tagore, and Thomas Hardy. In 2022, the requiem was released under Regent Records (UK), recorded with soloists Catherine Wyn-Rogers and Julien Van Mellaerts, Truro Cathedral Choir, the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, and conducted by Christopher Gray. The album peaked at number 5 in the UK's Official Specialist Classical Albums Chart.
The work is one of a number of requiems which move away from the traditional Latin requiem mass. Such a movement has been described as a post-Enlightenment phenomenon which really took hold during the nineteenth century. Following Brahms's Ein Deutsches Requiem, the first performance of which took place in the secular setting of the Leipzig Gewandhaus, Hubert Parry and others began utilising a hybrid of religious and non-religious elements in their work. Composers such as Herbert Howells, Paul Hindemith, John Foulds, and Benjamin Britten further experimented in this sense, by developing the Requiem through the 20th century (see Requiem Modern Treatments).
The "Secular Requiem" follows this tradition. Commissioned by Truro Cathedral's Three Spires Singers and composed by a "carefully considered non-believer", Pascoe intended the piece to be inclusive and accessible to those with or without a faith. This ambition led him to set historic and contemporary poetry from around the world.
Roundly praised by critics, particularly on release of the 2022 album, Andrew Palmer wrote that the Secular Requiem "is worth exploring not just because of the marvellous pairing of music and texts but as an inspiring and beautiful work, full of hope.". Jean-Yves Duperron, in his review, states that "Russell Pascoe sets down the proper emotive tone for each differing poem, which at times projects a diametric atmosphere, but manages to weave everything together into one cohesive and well-proportioned whole."
The BBC is billing this 2022 release as the most ambitious performance project ever undertaken by an English cathedral choir. That might be debated, but it is certainly true that the orchestral palette used here by composer Russell Pascoe is unusually large and varied. Yet, to talk purely about the size is to miss the point somewhat. Pascoe's varied orchestration is not an end in itself but is a response to his texts, which were compiled and, in one case, contributed by Anthony Pinching. This situation may be unique, and it is worth checking out Pascoe's work on that basis alone. The texts fall into five sections, somewhat reminiscent of Elisabeth Kübler-Ross' five stages of grief: "The Proposition," "The Recognition," "The Reaction," "The Transition," and "The Accommodation." The first three of these (and the fourth, in an expanded version) end with a refrain in the unaccompanied women's voices of a text by Rabindranath Tagore, beginning "Peace, my heart." Beyond that are poems that approach death from a great variety of perspectives and in various moods; Dylan Thomas' "Do not go gently into that good night" is here, but so is "Cats and Cake," a touching, slightly humorous poem by Stephen Anderton that depicts a recently deceased woman enumerating tasks she has left undone. Please forgive my ignorance but after eighty years of listening to the standard fare of the Great Composers etc! etc! I am astounded to discover hundreds of "diamonds" of long neglected compositions by long forgotten Composers thanks to Utube and you Mr Ben van Geest. Regards.
Why no comments but my poor contribution?? Absolutely beautiful. Why such music gradually moves into the realms of distant clouds while classical music may remember the usual composer's contributions and on the periphery so many wonderful compositions by long forgotten composers drift into obscurity. Such desperate shame! So, So much to be rediscovered and the so called great composers may be forced to bow down in appreciation of their ancestors contribution to the onward progression of symphonic discoveries.

What can one say while wishing to be totally respectful to the person whom this wonderful requiem is dedicated to, but this is a glorious work most worthy in being dedicated to all mothers and fathers as well.

Why oh why do I have to search for such wonderful examples of truly magnificent performances of probably long "put to bed" Symphonies or Requiems which are not available on Radio3 or Classic FM or for example at The Proms?? Thanks to U tube long forgotten creations of thousands of musical works are now available for enjoyment.

My humble opinión: this music is thousend times more charming, amazing and funny than anything Bach Wrote, with the Same Level of complexity. In Addition, the text is the catholic mass and no absurd pietist poetry.
Thank you for your insightful comment. Personally, I adore Bach and I think Zelenka is on many occasions on a comparable level and ought to be recognized as such. Unfortunately, the mainstream media usually limits itself to the over-played usual suspects. Hence this YT-channel...
