I've been in screen printing for almost 10 years now and have been running my own print company out of my house for the last 5. I print with only water based ink and I'll never go back to plastisol. I've been in graphic design for more than 20 years and currently serve as a Sr Technical Consultant for marketing automation in my day job. My goal with this channel is to show the tips and tricks that I have learned over the years and hopefully it will help you in your own print company. I'm here to share what I know and help as much as I can.
Designing art for dark and light shirts - how to make your design work on any shirt
It's not uncommon to get an order where a customer wants the design printed on both light and dark garments. However, the problem is not every design works both ways and it's not always as simple as inverting colors. It might work ok, but there's often a better way to create an even better result for your customer.

Hey how would I go about sending you the art for you to print the film positives?
Hi I recently bought this template but I'm confused on how to use it, do I need an airtable subscription
You will just need to create a free Airtable account.
Great video!
Thank you!
Really appreciate the advice! Thank you🤙
Glad it was helpful!
Your videos have been so helpful! I am looking for an answer to a question. If i added warp drive to one color and not the other (oops) whats the best option? I printed probably 35 shirts before i realized i had grabbed the wrong white. Can i just cure it normally at like 90 seconds under flash?
Yeah you can just cure longer but you risk burning the shirt. Make sure it doesn’t get about 330 or so. Helps to put a fan blowing over the shirt from a distance to help maintain heat on a flash. Hope that helps! If you have a heat press you can use that to cure as well.
Great video!
Thanks!
Still going through all of your videos. This one was a banger. Incredibly helpful! Thanks Jesse
I think that you might be able to answer a super specific question of mine. I'm looking at possibly purchasing new pallets for my press which are standard aluminum with rubber top from action engineering. I've been using print grips for months now and love them. It looks to me that you've got that exact set up. Can you put the print grip over the top of the rubber top?
Yes that is how I set it up, although I wish I had put pallet tape down first.
Kind of new to screen printing. Live in a very hot south East Asian country. Using water based white ink has been a nightmare for me. Anyway thanks for the vid. Useful.
Thanks for the video! My suggestion would be to work or apprentice for a screen printing company. You will probably start out cleaning screens and squeegees. It would be a plus to earn while you learn. Observe and do your homework. You'll feel better about making informed decisions about how and what you need to start your own screen printing business. Worked for me. 40 + years and still in the printing business.
Great advice!
That did help. Thanks Man.
Glad to hear that!
Thank you SO much. This made my day. My 1430 quit on me today so I’m not only needing a new printer but a new rip app.
Glad it was helpful!
Can find a video on your settings for dark transparencies on epson 1430. Please help
A good rip and a black dye cartridge kit, or if no rip then use a rich black setting for your swatch in photoshop or illustrator
i use it
This video helped me out a lot. After trying all day with white ink that was too thick, I visited Ryonet to get some Green Galaxy Clear Core Base.
Does anyone have thoughts on this printer vs. the Canon Pixma iX6820 for screen printing?
I know people are using both so my guess is either option is a good choice
As a person just starting out with screen printing, this is BY FAR the best video I have seen on this topic. Much appreciated info and guidance, thank you so much!
That’s great to hear!
Hey I need some film made how to I get in contact with you
Sorry I missed this comment. Anthem screen printing is a good option if you haven’t already found a source.
Love the channel. Just found it! Please do a video on blanks and blends. And dye migration! Btw I made a shirt for my hair salon Lady with dtf and she has sent me a couple customers.
Thank you! I’ll add that to my list of videos thank you for the request!
Hey jesse, the file didnt include the 23x31 template, is that a mistake? Where can i find it?
Ah thanks for letting me know. I’ll send it to you.
Go sign up on my website again and it should send you a new email with an updated link. Or you can email me and I’ll send it to you 👍
Coming from a litho printing background, it's good to finally know someone who can explain what a rich black is and how to achieve it. Many I have viewed on UA-cam are touting 100% CMYK. I thought this seemed odd.
I grew up going with my dad to print houses to proof his catalogs and they were printed litho, of course he always called it offset but same same :)
I was completely frustrated today, and really down to be honest. My 1430 Epson just quit on me and I have been using the very old version of accu-rip on my old 08 iMac to print my seps. I happened onto your channel and saw what printer you use and the rip software. Is the rip a one time fee. I can’t tell from their site. How do you like it. Does it compare to accu-rip app.. I’m older and have been doing this stuff since 1989, but have kept things simple. I really like your videos and the way you explained things etc.
I have cut a card to the size of the platen, then placing it over a shirt, I use a ruler to align it, then using tailor's chalk, I make short little guide strokes on the shirt using the edge of the card as a guide. Then I simply align the shirt with the strokes on the edge of the platen.
That’s certainly one way to do it
Anyone use the Epson 15000?
Can’t say I’ve ever heard of anyone using it but maybe someone will chime in
@startupscreenprinting my Epson SC-P400 does not recognize new ink cartridges. I've done all I can do to rectify the issue to no avail. Very frustrating.
Great video! Thank you for all the knowledge and tips!
My pleasure!
Why the coat hanger?
I hang them up as I’m printing so I’m not stacking hot shirts and risking ghosting of the prints onto other shirts. Also it saves space over having to have places to stack.
About 2 min of info here. Editing needs some work
I appreciate that you watched and shared your thoughts. It would be great to know what parts of the video you found helpful or which sections might need a bit more detail. Constructive feedback like that helps me create content that’s valuable for everyone here.
This is crazy... well the fact that the 1430 is 2300 bucks on amazon (11/14/2024).... I bought the artisan 1430 brand new back in 2016 or 17 from best buy for $239.99! wish i had bought 100 of them. We use it for sublimation but they have become very popular for sublimation, screen print, DTF and even DTG with conversion kits... GREAT Printers!
Yeah the price is dumb! I love my new $200 printer. Maybe I should buy more of them for when they get discontinued and go up in price like the 1430 haha
Do you think curing with a heat press is an issue?
no that should be fine, i would recommend using a heat gun to dry it to touch then finish curing with the heat press.
Thank you!
What kind of paper/plastic material is your registration template printed on? The one you use on your platten, not the one on the foamboard you use for film alignment during exposure. I saw you mention in somewhere but I cant find it. Thanks
Styrene shop.startupscreenprinting.com/b/on-press-registration-card
Thanks for the info. Id love to see you discuss your rip
I’ll try to address this in a video soon
@startupscreenprinting thanks 👍
Dye migration? I thought this only occurred with sublimation? (I do sublimation as well)
Yup dye migration happens any time you are heating polyester or garment dyed apparel so it can happen with any type of printing. Even with triblends you can get some color changing if you heat them too high.
Whats the purpose of adding a low cure additive and what is it? Again, Im brand new and learning screen printing
Normally water based ink needs to be cured to 320° for a couple of minutes but to do that you need a large forced air dryer. Since I don’t have that, I add the low cure additive and it allows me to heat the print to 260° for just a few seconds and it continues to cure chemically over the next 48 hours.
I hope you see and answer this question. Can you prep your screens ahead of time and if so how far in advance. Ex 2 weeks ahead just to have some on deck. I currently do DTF and looking to add screen printing once I move into my space in June. I'm researching and learning right now
Yup you can. A couple weeks should be fine as long as they are on a light safe environment. I’ve had screens coated for up to a month and was able to expose them just fine.
Dang I missed the actual live. I just started following you and I really want to catch the actual live and not the recording
Every Friday at 1pm MT! Hope to see you on there next week.
does it work for sweaters?
I just printed a bunch of fleece hoodies last week and it worked great!
Hi does this ink work for every inkjet printers? Or just this model?
Check out filmdirectonline.com for compatible printers, there are several
It's to my understand that you can't use laser printer. Is this true? Edit: Just saw where you can. Thanks
it's not true. The shop i managed years ago had a laser printer and it's all we used. The benefit is you don't need RIP software as RIP is built into laser printers. One of the reasons most shops use inkjet is because laser toner is more expensive than ink. But the biggest reason is because laser printers struggle to get a really dark film so you typically have to spray the printed film with toner enhancer in order to darken the print before you use it to expose a screen. So it adds a step to the process. Plus it's not UV blocking like the black dye kits you can get for inkjet printers. So the quick answer is yes you can use a laser printer, i did for years. But an inkjet will often get better results and is a better investment.
@@startupscreenprinting Thanks, I did notice you mentioned this at the end of the vidoe. Thank you for your help.
I've been watching your channel for awhile... But now I know for sure your legit. Anyone that goes through the trouble of lining your small upper shelf with shelf liner is my kinda people 😂
Haha love this 🤙🏻
how tacky are your platens during this process? I think I may be over tacking mine, making them difficult to load
Yeah if they’re super sticky that can be an issue. Maybe try keeping the adhesive about an inch from the edge of the platens. Also try not to drag the shirt across the whole platten, have it raised a bit and that could help.
Pretty tacky with the printgrips I have. When I was using adhesive I’d keep it about an inch from the edges and that helped the shirt not get stuck. Also try to lift the shirt as you load so it doesn’t drag. Hope that helps!
Are there alternative brands or other options for this?? I was trying to find in store today for smaller batches.
Sorry I’m not quite sure. I’ve only ever used these green galaxy products.
@@startupscreenprintinghow to you print photos?? I’m using white water based ink for dark shirts. Would thinning out help the image??
That depends on what result you're looking for and what issues you're having. The purpose in this video is to thin the white ink so that it stays wet in the screens for longer runs but thinning it also means you may have to print twice to get a bright white print on a dark shirt. What is the issue you're having with your prints?
@@startupscreenprinting the print is not very sharp. I noticed my ink is thickening up so I was going to buy a new batch to see if that helps. I watched a video and reduced ink was mentioned. Plastisol was also recommended but I print at home so water based sounds like a better option for cleanup.
sometimes sharpness of the image can have more to do with your screen or your squeegee/technique. But if the ink is thickening, then that can also cause smudging so thinning can help. I assume you're printing on a 156 or 200 mesh screen?
Thanks for doing this!
My pleasure!
Hi there. Idk if this is right place to ask, but what are your thoughts on the xtool screen printing kit? I bought one a few months ago and have been playing around, but am concerned woth limitations. Also, I dont have space for a full traditional set up. 😬
I haven’t ever tried it but from what I can tell it could be a great solution if you already have a laser. It’s not going to be great for large quantity orders, but for smaller stuff it should be great. Similar to the new Pigskins and Pigtails press from Ryonet. I think both are good presses that you could certainly start a viable business with. Maybe I’ll talk more about this during this week’s lunch break live on Friday.
Just wondering, I have a business I’m looking to get some clothes made with branding. Do you think vista print is good or I should find a local place? Around 35 peices in total, shirts sweater hat
Find somewhere local for sure vs vista print or submit a quote for my print shop I’m happy to help. www.alpineapparelco.com
Can this printer work for printing DTF heat transfers as well?
I don’t think so
Can this printer be used for DTF heat transfers also?
I don’t think so
Do you need to do double layer printing with this printer to block UV light? Thanks.
actually since this printer is a high quality photo printer, you don't actually HAVE to have uv ink to get a pretty great film positive, but it helps to use a rich black color in photoshop/illustrator when printing the films. I do, however, have the black dye conversion kit that i discussed in the video and it works even better than regular ink and it has the UV blocking properties. But even without it, you can typically get by with just a single film and rarely, if ever, need to double layer with this type of printer.
@@startupscreenprinting Interesting thanks for the reply. I guess I should use this printer. I do know I have canon pixma IPX which I bought 8 years ago. So just to confirm, with the Epson printer you first started out, if you used high quality UV blocking inks, was it able to block UV light with just one film print and not requiring to use double layers?
@ShopperPlug if you use a printer that’s capable of running UV blocking dye, then you shouldn’t have to double layer. Even with regular ink if the printer is a high quality photo printer you shouldn’t have to double layer on most things.
@@startupscreenprinting Thanks for the reply. Understood. For the Epson printer, which uv blocking inks would you recommend that is the best? Dmax or from Fill Direct or something else?
@ShopperPlug from my experience I’ve actually had better results with the dye from film direct than the dmax. I found that the dmax didn’t block as much and it clogged the heads more often.
1:38 - I have a similar wf-3620 printer, have you tried using special UV blocking inks which have a rating of optical density of 4.7-5? These inks should block all UV lights. I plan on buying these inks but since you mentioned you need to use double layer films, that completely defeats the purpose.
If you watched the full video you’ll see I don’t use this printer anymore. I now use a canon ip8720 with all black uv dye cartridges.
@@startupscreenprinting Thanks for the reply. I've seen the entire video. I was referring on your experiences based on the older wf-3620 model if you've ever used special UV blocking inks. My assumption is that using UV blocking inks on the wf-3620 should provide a good print without needing to use double layer film, but I just wanted to confirm with your past experiences. I also avoid Canon printers because they use thermal-based print heads, which only work on certain limited inks designed to be used with high temperatures. Piezoelectric print heads are the best in using multiple range of inks and it is patented by Epson. I'll take a look on your Canon video.
I see, yeah I do use the UV dye in my current printer and it's a great choice for anyone printing films for screen printing. The thing to look out for is if there are cartridges available for your printer. For screen printing, Epson and Canon are the printers that most often have the cartridges available. It's known as an "All black ink conversion" and then you'd use whatever dye option is meant for those cartridges and printer. For example, some dyes only work in canon or epson and not both. For my current printer, I purchased new refillable cartridges from filmdirectonline.com along with a black dye meant for canon printers and it's working very, very well. The dye has the UV blocking properties and when combined with a good software RIP, you get a really dense, opaque black print that works great for exposing screens. I only showed the WF printer in this video to inform people that they "could" start with just any inkjet printer they have so that beginners can be encouraged to give it a try, but as mentioned in the video i warned them that if the design has large areas of ink, that it can be a bit transparent and cause issues during exposure, hence double-layering the film, but even that presents it's own issues. At this time, the WF printer i used to use, and many others like it, do not have black ink conversion kits available, so the best option is to upgrade to a new printer that does have a kit available and make that swap from day 1. The Epson 1430 printer shown in this video has long been the standard for film printers for screen printers, but since it's no longer made it's difficult to find them and to get parts. I also found that the dye would clog the print heads way more often in the Epson printer than with my new canon printer, so I'm a canon fan for now. Plus, at the low price tag of these canon printers, one could very easily have a backup printer (most shops do) ready for if/when there are print head issues.
Great tips AND reminders Jesse! I've got my eye on a used Ryonet conveyer dryer on marketplace.....
Did you print the shirt your wearing? Is so what brand is it?
I did, yes. It’s Kastlfel
Wouldn't auto printer still have the same problem because they still have to out the shirts on manually.
Yes, they just usually have larger platens which makes loading them straight a bit easier, but still a potential issue
