Where crusty cars get new life! At Chasing Crusty Cars, we celebrate and embrace flaws, imperfection and evidence of the car's life well lived.
To us, faded paint, dents, scratches, bondo patches and primer spots are all badges of honor, which tell the story of how a crusty car has endured the challenges presented by years passed, odometer clicks accumulated, wild terrain explored...and wide-open throttle thrills experienced.
Though we have a soft spot in our hearts for certain cars, such as Big Red ('72 Bus), the Danger Ranger ('86 Ford pickup) and Red ('69 Beetle), we have no brand or model loyalty. We seek out crusty cars into which we can breathe new life. We're all about getting crusty cars back on the road again and keeping them on the road...in all of their crusty car glory.

Derek 'Boxrod' lends a hand when my bus stalled while off-roading
Переглядів 71Місяць тому
On Friday, 26 April 2024, several VW enthusiasts ventured out for an epic off-road adventure on the Onion Creek Trail in Arches National Park. Derek came to the rescue when my 1969 Westy stalled after one of several water crossings.
David and Jenn Get One Wheel in the Air on Onion Creek Trail

Video captured on Friday, `26 April 2024, at the Arches National Park near Moab, Utah. Approximately 29 VWs (Split Window Buses, Bay Window Buses, Vanagons, and Beetles) ventured out onto the legendary Onion Creek Trail.
Will this prevent vapor lock on the new 2007cc motor in Old Red, the 1969 Bus?

This video was produced for members of my VW club. I wager other VW Bus owners who operate their bus in a hot climate might benefit by adding a similar system to their bus.

Shop Series: Stuck oil filter? No wrench? Now what?
Переглядів 138 тис.3 роки тому
Removing a stuck oil filter can be hard enough when you have the right tools. The dilemma is even more difficult when the correct tools are not available. Find out how I handled this when it happened to me. Get your Chasing Crusty Cars swag here: shop.spreadshirt.com/chasing-crusty-cars
I’m a that a motor or an engine?😂
Maybe those knit work gloves that have a rubber palm .
Ruby wants to be an honorary VW Beetle! She is small! (Honda Fit)
For a few minutes, I thought you were a giant next to danger ranger. Beautiful car barn DB.
That is a nice crusty 13mm spanner.
in Australia we'd say "Open Haus" 😁
Hey, Danny! I like it! Keep posting more tips on how to speak Aussie! I hope all's been well for you! 🙂👍
Was it water traveling up to the manifold through the exhaust where did the points get wet
Hey, Paulie! With vintage air-cooled VWs, everything above the case, cylinders and heads is supposed to be sealed in separate air space from all that lies below. The seal is composed of a collection of specially-shaped steel "tins" along with a flexible rubber seal. The tins and seal are never air-tight. There are small openings where water can, and will, get into the upper area where the distributor, coil, intake manifold, carburetor, generator/alternator, fuel pump, and fan shroud are located. In my case, water hit the distributor and (of less concern) the plug wires. I immediately removed the distributor cap and, using paper towels (WD40 works too), I dried it inside and out, though very little, if any, water was observed inside the distributor cap. I dried plug wires where they ran in parallel along the engine tins and had the greatest water contamination. After the quick paper towel treatment and reassembly of the distributor, my 1969 Westy fired up on the first try! It was an epic day of off-roading with a great crew of adventure-seeking VW enthusiasts! I greatly appreciate Derek's willingness to stop and offer help! My buddy Scott with his 1971 Single Cab and I logged around 1,900 miles on the round trip from Shasta County California to Moab, Utah. More videos to come!
Vee Wee Adventures 😃👍 Glad to see ya having fun !! ✌️❤️🙏
Thanks, Paulie P! The Moab Arches Nat'l Park off-road trips were a blast! Many cool VW people and vehicles met at the Lin Ottinger"s Canyon Tours facility for a weekend of scenic and technical driving in our vintage, air-cooled VWs! I hope all's well with you, my friend! Cheers!
Lol just use a vise grip.
Tried mine doesn’t open wide enough
Orange can of death?
I love your Ranger. I would love to have one like it. My uncle had one years ago. It was a little four cylinder standard transmission, and that thing was such a great little truck.
THIS IS THE ANSWER!!! NO EXPENSIVE TOOLS, YOU"RE A GENIUS!!
In a pinch you can also drive a phillips screwdriver into the filter and turn it that way
WRAP WITH DUCT TAPE >>>> GIVES GOOD GRIP >>> EASY TO UNSCREW
Best video on here 😊
Easy to avoid this problem by always, tightening 3/4 of a turn once the filter contacts the engine. But good hack
Just saved me! Thanks a bunch
Hahaha! It's going! It's working! Nice try. "That's the money" Good vibes and good job!👍
Thank you so much sir it's a big problem for me..love from india..
Drop your phone and use two hands!
That’s not a “square” ( better known to the rest of the civilized world as as “reef”) knot it’s a granny knot !!!
Get 16" channel lock pliers good for lots of things also
THANK YOU!!! I couldn't get my filter off my dakota, there was no room to get it off with the other methods. I couldn't believe this worked!
Saved me a trip to autozone, thanks!
Newer gas with ethanol will tend to boil in the fuel pump and then get more heated in the oddly placed VW line and then ultimately boil over in the carb bowls making way for vapor lock. It makes this vehicle dangerous to drive and makes the bus almost useless in the summer months. Redoing this factory blunder with a 5/16" brake/fuel metal line that was not in the heat path would more than help.... But I would have, (as I would in most all old relics) run an electric fuel pump to a fuel pressure regulator which then would be run to the carb and have a return to the gas tank so that the gas is always flowing and not overheating. It would render what you have done unnecessary and cranking the motor would be somewhat instantaneous.
😃👍 That's pretty ingenious. I suppose most rear mounted engines would have this problem then, correct?
Hi Paulie P. Yes, rear-engine, air-cooled motors tend to be more vulnerable to vapor lock. I've experienced vapor lock on a stock 1969 Beetle. Older cars had this vulnerability too. In short, if the fuel boils at the fuel pump, vapor lock can occur. Once the system cools enough, the fuel will return to a liquid and can then be pumped up to the carb(s) once again.
Worked like a charm. Thanks!
You just saved me from having to make second last minute trip to my auto parts store to get a filter wrench. This worked perfectly and easily within minutes. Easier than I thought.
I have been trying to figure out with my dad what kind of tool would be best to remove a stubborn oil filter - we've tried a bunch of solutions already and no cigar! I'll have to show him this and we'll see if it works :).
Very helpful, I might try it on mine. Thank you so much
For me, never had a problem as long as I hand tightened ONLY when installing the new filter. Own a 1993 Honda Civic Del Sol with very confined space to work in.
Without watching, bet he is going to poke it with a screwdriver, or he is going to steal his wife's jar opener like I do. Me? I would have converted it to electric, so don't watch my channel. I must admit, I still turn and look over a classic girl when one drives by.
best trick is to stab it with a screwdriver and twist it off. way faster. learned that from an old timer
Dude that's awesome and I love my fram oil filters. It doesn't matter what kind of oily filter you use they're going to get stuck on regardless
My Framoil filter is stuck too
Was definitely cool!
I looked up this video and I started to try your method, although I had a different idea while tying it, cuz my ratchet strap I attempted to use kept slipping, I tried one more time with both hands and I actually got it with my hands, tried so hard the first few times my knuckles cracked. My idea though, was to wrap the strap around it nice and tight so it overlapped across the back and the strap would bind on its self with tension, and tie it to the closed end, and looped through the open end and use the wrench like a pry bar to push it thus spinning the filter, maybe next time I do my oil I’ll try it out but figured I’d leave this comment incase it helps someone else with gettin it off, even though I got it by hand after 5-6 attempts. Cheers. Ah next video below yours! Dude did a variation of using a strap! ua-cam.com/video/u5kIfxsyJfE/v-deo.html
PH3506?
Great info...thanks...just not possible on a 2003 Toyota Highlander when trying to remove it from above the filter. I've always hand tightened and loosened. I can't imagine why it's so tight this time.
Worked great
Pretty good idea 👍 Although I didn't have anything I could wrap around it, it did give me two ideas. After those didn't work, I resorted to just refilling, warming the engine enough to loosen it and just sacrificed the small amount of oil that spilled out while replacing the filter. Lessons to be learned - always hand loosen the filter first Buy an oil filter wrench just in case. Thanks for the inspiration ✌️
Awesome to see Old Red bringing cheer to all ! So festive!
I love it! Happy Festivus for the rest of us!
Around here, we call it "Festibus." 😉
Merry Christmas Dave very very cool VW bus glad to see something come from this channel again ✌️❤️🙏
Many thanks, Paulie P.! I appreciate the kind words. Stay tuned, there's more to come, but on a new channel. 🙂👍
Merry Christmas Dave. Nice to see you. It's been a while, I thought the "Vid" might of got you.
Thanks! I'm doing well. Other projects have me busy. Tech support channel coming soon!
Could you use wide nylon tie or whatever in America..
Amazon next morning delivery.
Noted. Same-day, no-cost solution trumps next day delivery. 🙂
Thanks you save me
If you can fit a drill in and just poke a hole through the filter. Put a screw driver through it and twist it off.
😂😂😂. Funny. Once I used a braided belt. Yup rapped it around the filter as tight as I could put the buckle pin through the braid and pulled. Came right off.
