Literally, what happens when Hollywood decides a normal knife a normal criminal (or a regular soldier or any SpecOps) would use just doesn't "pop" on the screen enough, so they have their actors and stun doubles do a bunch of pointlessly complicated goofy ass knife tricks to look good for the camera, and all the major studios do this all throughout the 1980s, so a bitch of slick haired greasy liberal morons in high rise penthouses and gated communities who have no clue what a neighbourhood where robberies happen (without signing a contract) even looks like, so they proceed to take Hollywood's bullshit seriously and proceed to ban all the knives that are primarily used by working class people so their jails can get even more full of marginalized people like nonwhite, immigrant, and working class communities can be targeted on their way too and from work and they can pretend like they're doing something to be "tough on crime" while utterly ignoring the actual crime. Bravo. Literally, movies from the 1980s somehow misinformed these complete idiots to banning these in not just blue states but also red states, to where even to this day we're struggling to get it overturned and half of all states you can be fined or do jailtime for merely owning brass knuckles, switchblades, blackjacks, cane swords (who tf even has one of those anyway?), balisongs, and, I am not even kidding you, throwing stars. Why? Because I am guessing they was popular in kungfu movies in the 1980s and these same clueless wrinkly fat old white people similarly mistook Jackie Chan for a real life killer and decided to outlaw a nonlethal distraction weapon.

Fun fact, the man in the red and white shirt in the punisher scene was actually stabbed. He had picked up the wrong knife (not a prop) and was genuinely scared when he realized he had just stabbed him.

1:18 for anyone's that curious, this was a real balisong knife that was accidentally used on set but the actor just manned up and held the pain.

There's one thing in common with all of these scenes. They all need to tighten the screws on their balisongs.

I first saw a balisong in 1984's Streets of Fire, but it wasn't the diner scene I remember it was him opening the door to save the girl tied to the bed. Saved up my money and bought one out of Black Belt Magazine a few years later.

The most impressive balisong trick, is selling a garbage knife that's barely of any use as an actual knife, to 15 year olds, just by selling the idea that you can spin it around like in a movie. It's a toy, not a weapon. It's a fidget spinner you could maybe sharpen a pencil with, and then use the pencil as a superior weapon.

Now i see how they got banned. Every movie depicts them as either a villain's weapon or their henchmen's weapon to make them look like a pushover. If the hero or protagonist ever uses one, it's always to either be intimidating or make them look like a badass by establishing dominance with it. It's like jobber bad guy: whips it out to show how intimidating he is! Hero: steals it from him and does better tricks to show his superiority. Whole shtick is so 80s lol.
