You cant compare it to modern times. Hes a man in the middle ages, and thats his wife, his "property". If he wants to have sex with her, hes going to. And also it didnt even look like rape, she wasnt fighting back, she was just crying. It probably just hurt her physically. And once she grows fierce and shows him shes not just some weak fuck buddy for him, he starts to see her as a true wife, and respects and loves her.

As I recall the book saying that she was in pain the first little while when he'd have sex with her, but that was only because of her soreness from the constant horseback riding and her being a virgin, and that once her body adjusted, she started to gain pleasure from it. She wanted to learn to please him because he was distant from her other than when they were in bed and she wanted to become more than a sex partner to him. So she learned to please him, which made him see her as a real wife.
