(VOD review for strawberry!) YO! Okay, so, I have a lot to say just from the first game so far. First thing I wanna mention is; (and trust me, this is a good thing lol) I think there's a lot more to improve on than just neutral! I noticed your advantage state, combo game, zoning game, and disadvantage could all use work (plus a few other smaller categories I randomly thought of) - and I'll try to explain how by using different situations from the vod. Main categories: Neutral - [Wasn’t won in game 1, but was pushed in games 2 and 3, and better attempted in game 4] I noticed right off the bat at 0:06 your starting options were great. Bomb to protect your charge, shield for further protection after the detonation, and afterward a drop down to engage. I will say that dash attack is a risky option in this situation because of how predictable it is and how punishable it can be on shield, but it isn't necessarily bad. In general, your neutral is fairly solid, and I think it would be a lot better if a few of your habits were worked on first. At 0:49, when neutral resets, your first reaction is to dash attack, spot dodge, jab, then pivot grab, all while dreamy stays on his side of the stage. You then lose neutral 0:55 to a poorly spaced dair. Try to be more patient in this situation; watch what the opponent does while responding with your own options. You could alternatively poke his plat movement with zair and apply charge pressure, chase him with an aerial, or try to bait an option with bomb. Players won't always end up in the exact spot you predict, so it's always better to stick to a safe move that can punish an aggressive option over a jab mixup or dair. Also at 1:23, It usually isn’t a good idea to corner yourself with charge vs an invincible opponent. Gain center stage, use movement to avoid getting hit (and to wait out invincibility), then set up a bomb trap that can lead into charge shot. This is all in contrast to 2:55 where you did an awesome job of catching his movement to push him to the corner, and 3:52 where you win neutral by using simplicity against a bad approach (although the advantage was later dropped) Advantage - [Wasn't established in games 1 or 4, but was pushed in games 2 and 3] You tend to whiff a lot of kill moves and then lean back with charge, which can sometimes make it harder to kill and easier to get reversaled up close. For the entirety of 8:05 - 8:51, you practically made dreamy play into your hands. He whiffs, you punish, and then the cycle repeats. I will say though, you could have applied charge pressure more effectively by having better movement, and avoided mis inputs by getting consistent with performing those moves in training mode. Play 8:41 back at 0.25x speed. That’s a neat hurtbox shift moment :0 Combo - [Largely hit or miss for the entire set] Definitely work on hitting her bread and butters/confirms consistently. There were a few times you landed a dair and missed a bair or up smash that would've put you in a great position to take dreamy’s stock, like at 1:58 and 2:09 (however, nicely done at 8:17 & 9:58, going for a more reliable up tilt is a great call) Even with up air ladders, you need to hit the auto cancel and full hop consistently to pull it off on a stage with plats. For reference, I’ve gotten 6 different up air ladders on stream in a single tourney before, of which I will link at the bottom of the comment for note-taking/inspiration. I did like the attempt to switch directions at 3:00 though :D Zoning - [Wasn’t established in games 1 or 4, but was pushed in games 2 and 3] Actually pretty well done! Dreamy wasn’t able to break your wall for most of game 2 and 3, which is admittedly really impressive. When it comes to game 4, though, the issues in your gameplay started to set back in, which didn’t allow for much more zoning. (that along with a few SD’s…. Make sure you have a jump when charging!) Disadvantage - [Not easily escaped for the entire set] Game 1 is the best example I can give here. Incineroar’s pressure is very difficult to deal with mentally - being stuck in an up air string and taking 40% will almost always make panic mode activate. Most players will opt for an overly safe and shield heavy style in your situation, but the best way to handle it is by slowing things down and making strategic moves. No need to match the aggression of a character that has superior boxing tools. Subcategories: Recovery - 0:34 Nuh uh. 10:16 NUH UH. 5:51 NUH UHH. Return to ledge and mix up your get up timings smH Ledge trapping - Always run to ledge while the opponent is off stage. Never charge in the center and let them get up for free. It risks them taking control of the stage and keeping you out before you have a chance to touch them. Also be more aware of what options a character has to get off the ledge. Running up, flashing shield, then using an option to punish theirs can be a really effective strat against an up b that sharks over the ledge. Landing - Once in the air, you DO NOT want to land with an aerial or engage further. The goal with landing is to avoid the opponent and hopefully reset the ground game. This, along with losses in neutral, is the reason game 1 was so lopsided. It can be a difficult task against characters like incin who can get to your position faster and juggle for longer, but NEVER hold in when given the opportunity. If you can’t make it to the ground, make it to the ledge. This is especially true at high % Option optimizations - Certain things to note when put in situations that aren't well understood. (Ex. at ledge without time to do a bomb set-up, pressured by moves you don’t have an instant answer against, and knowing when to and when not to be in the air) At ledge, when there’s no time to use a bomb set-up, the safest option is to jump back and nair, or charge if possible. It only covers roll, but it’ll put you into the position to catch the opponent after they make a move. In an uncomfortable position where you’re getting stringed and neither up b, jab, or dtilt will work, hop or dash away and come back with your own fire. Certain elements of neutral can be reversed like when offstage or at ledge. Ground play isn’t only limited to your use of charge, it can be dominated by most of her normals and other specials as well. Make sure not to exclusively be in the air or ground for the majority of a match. General habits to work on: Pivot grab abuse, awkward empty hops in close quarter situations, offstage charge with inward drift, aggressive get up options, & the occasional super missile/dair in neutral. (I also want to mention that limiting full hop rar bair in neutral and at kill % will significantly better yourself in both areas) Personal advice: I'd recommend focusing more on your overarching, non charge-limited movement and spacing. Your gameplay (as shown in the vod) seems very stiff and easily punishable against a player that knows how to fight the phazon warrior. Similar gameplay can work for samus with it's own fine-tuning, but it's always good to have high motor skill in a game like smash.
