That's precisely the legacy of the 1960s, or at least one of its parts, the New Left and the spread of the Frankfurt School's ideas. They WERE looking for oppression everywhere. The goal was to undermine society. As Nietzsche wrote, he who wants to be a creator must first be a destroyer.

THANK YOU SM FOR SPEAKING OUT!! your absolutely and 100% right! every single word you said is a fact, the world has to hear, it gone to far, and it has to stop now!! i mean did you hear of this case: "in 2018 a father in Canada was informed that a Hospital would begin administrating Hormone-altering Medications to his Child, according to a recently passed Canadian Law, Doctors can administer these Meds to Children, without Parental Consent, When the father spoke out, he was arrested and fined $30000 Dollars for misgendering his 13 year old daughter, the Child came firsly into Contact with that, through it's school, which ultimately send that Child to that Doctor, without saying anything to it's parents." another case was, in a Kindergarten, there was a 5 year old Girl, who was playing with Toy Cars, the Teacher who deemed them as "toys for boys" so she gone up to that girl and told her that she's most likely a "boy in a girls body" so she gone home to her mother saying "mommy, I'm a boy in a girls body" on which the mother asked her, from who do you have that, that's absolutely false! you are a wonderful girl. she said from my teacher, so the next day the Mother gone with her 5 year daughter into her Kindergarten, and asking why do you say that to my daughter, on which she gave no answer, but instead was called a bigot and a homophobe by them. do you see this insanity, it's just insane where we live in today, we aren't progressing, we are going back! so your absolutely right when you say that it's the biggest medical scandal since Lobotomy, with the only difference that no one is saying anything because they don't wanna be cancelled and told that their a bigot, it's so sad, so I'm so grateful that you are speaking out against this, and that you use your freedom of speech!! please never stop, i wish you only the best (: God Bless You!!

I was looking forward to listening to this while getting back into the studio, that's how I usually listen to any radio programs. Thus maybe I didn't have the type of undistracted focus I might have had if I was not working on my "skilled" painting at the same time, but it was nice in that it felt like I was painting while in a room with my friend Waswo. His voice is so soothing in this piece, with the strong Milwaukee accent that made me homesick for the midwestern United States when I first met him in India, that he can broach ideas that I might disagree with in part with the kind of reasonable dialogue and give and take that used to be a part of our political culture, in art and politics, but sadly seems to be lacking now. I love how it flows in and out of past, present, the personal, political and framed by his residency with his friend and scholar Mary Storm in Sri Lanka. I feel I could listen to this again and again and get something different from it each time.

For those who know and love Waswo, The White Book is a gift, for those who do not know him at all, it is an eye-opener. The backdrop - with the gentle sounds of nature, and interludes of music- and the symbolic protagonist Narcissus, is mesmerising - as is the fluent way in which past mingles with the present, and present flows back into memory, blending discussions of work, life, politics and friendship and bringing into focus hard hitting realities, vulnerabilities and fears. Waswo's voice takes one through his journey, his photography and art making, his beliefs, gay culture, 'whiteness', and the karkhana, among so much more. 'There is an excess of politeness in this world' he says, discussing privileges and prejudices, and elitist lenses of art... and another phrase that stayed with me - 'the poetry of art has been ground to dust'. Waswo dissects and analyses, praises and parodies the art world - using his signature wit and humour, and sharp insights into the way things work (and don't work). So many things, to notice, to mull on, to laugh at. If this is just the beginning, then I can't wait for more!

Thouroughly enjoyed listening to The White Book. In the early chapters it sounded like my favourite Jim’s ‘American Prayer’ though very different in context. At times it felt like an enriching, opinionated art history refresher lesson; sometimes a memoir…Narcissus connected them all though, it’s all over the place but a place that one is happy to explore, rooted in the white guy we love - Waswo.

This weekend, listening to artist Waswo X. Waswo's voice narrate his new audiobook, ‘The White Book,’ brought to mind a fascinating parallel. Like Marco Polo, a man venturing into a strange land, Waswo comes to India and makes it his own. In ‘The White Book’, Waswo crafts an eclectic memoir-of-sorts, a self-made and deconstructed narrative of his life’s journey, as he ‘jumps’ and ‘dives’ into topics of his choice. The peacock, Narcissus is especially a beautiful metaphor. He navigates the complexities of the Indian art world, from fleeting trends to genuine connections to over-amped artists and groups, ultimately finding his anchor in Udaipur with deep friendships, now his chosen family. The sensitive way in which he talks about his collaborative art-making at ‘Karkhana’ studio and the artists who work with him, and the warmth in his voice when he talks about Ganpat Mali, demolishes any assumed biases of colonial/white/firanginess from the narrative. Though I haven't met Waswo personally, I had the privilege of co-curating his work for a group show years ago. His perspective on India, even through the lens of an ‘evil orientalist’, feels more authentically Indian than mine. This might be controversial, but it highlights 'The White Book's unique power. ‘The White Book’ offers a refreshingly clear perspective of an artist’s observations and concerns. The chapter titled 'Magic' is my favourite. Waswo's honesty is a breath of fresh air. He doesn't shy away from calling out mediocrity in the world or the art world (Hallelujah!). His fearless articulation is inspiring. Perhaps, when we finally do meet, some of his clarity and courage will rub off on me. This audiobook is a must-listen for anyone invested in the art world: honest-but-disillusioned artists, social media darlings churning out inauthentic work, those churning out baseless issue-based art for visibility, creators of nonsensical and thankfully ephemeral pieces, mindless imitators, frauds perpetuating plagiarism, flashy-elitist gallerists, artists afraid to speak their truth, residency opportunists, art publication fabricators, artists who fawn over authority, grant givers and seekers, self-promoting art promoters, curators, critics and educators, and everyone involved in the art market - auction houses, art dealers, biennial-biennale-surfers, art campers, art residency-short-circuiters, art buyers, investors, and collectors. And of course, all art students. Let Waswo X Waswo’s unfiltered wisdom in 'The White Book’ about Indian art, and life as an artist, guide you. :)

Waswo’s voice teems with clarity and insights. In a runtime of 2 hours and 48 minutes - which often feels like an excavation of the artist’s life - he weaves his reflections on a myriad of topics: from personal to professional, political to social, cultural to religious - which, by his own admission, may at times seem disparate and frustratingly meandering - that by the end of it, when, by one large tug of the needle, the pieces miraculously fall into place, one is left with a feeling of bewilderment and surprise at how deftly he accomplishes the task, how calmly he leads the listener along his journey, offering glimpses from his past, creating a portrait of a complex yet whole life. It’s also a rare sensory experience where, while listening, one is pulled into a world of dizzying scents and shapes and colours and sounds - of the soft rain falling and tapping the windows lightly; of the heady aroma of a warm, home-cooked Sri Lankan meal, served at a fixed hour every day; of peacocks crowing and singing, displaying their brilliant, many-coloured plume delightedly - which, although distant, may at once seem near.

Waswo X Waswo's The White Book is a captivating exploration of the human experience through the lens of his audio book. The book seamlessly weaves together remembered conversations, personal reflections, and cultural analysis, offering listeners a deep dive into topics ranging from identity and belonging to societal norms and expectations to cancel culture. The thematic thread running The White Book is the exploration of whiteness in contemporary society. Waswo navigates this complex terrain with nuance and sensitivity, acknowledging the privilege inherent in discussions of race and identity. The book offers a rewarding and enlightening listening experience.

2 hours and 48 minutes well spent. I've followed Waswo X. Waswo monologues Evil O and later the interviews that he used to do. He speaks quite well. And he is quite coherent despite touching on diverse topics, even controversial or scandalous stands for many these days. This reading or better to call it a walk along a partially known, almost familiar path which one is led by the voice of the the reader who is also the writer. Passages, anecdotes and memories were made and written down last year in September on a writer's retreat in Sri Lanka by the writer exploring his own self. A peacock helped him along as the individual searched for his own meaning and identifiers. Gay, American, Photographer, White, Outsider, Privileged, Victim, Young once, Old now, Traveller, and today one who feels like a father to all those that have worked with him or still do. There's talk about liberals, capitalists, communists, far fars - rights, lefts and centers, and of a cancel culture today that probably does more harm than good. As we again straddle the white or the black horse of good or evil, we continue to look through blinders, covering and cowering to absolutes - black/white, good/evil, white/brown, us/them right/left, wrong/right... Binaries and absolutes don't define humans and shouldn't define art or artists but they do. I had a fun time listening to all this much like a podcast while I had dinner followed with the Safeda mango at the peak of its seasonal produce and managed to post on social media about a new art and poetry competition around Rabindranath Tagore's birthday anniversary that I'm planning. Reminded me of the days when there was just radio. TV was there but scarce. Right out of my childhood when I visualised all that I heard. The names and the places that I heard, i visualised in my own way. Today I imagined all that Waswo spoke about, as his voice led me from Milwaukee to Udaipur to Sri Lanka and even on the road trip across Indian cities as he went galvinating around India meeting and recording interviews with artists. There's a lot that I can empathize with but never understand truly, some i relate to but not sure what to do about it, some i have no clue of but can understand the pain that could be. One might agree or not but one shouldn't ignore this reading of The White Book. It's long but relevant. Enjoy. Thanks for doing this Waswo as am sure it took a lot of effort to put together this audiobook. And the song at the end by this amazing Udaipur band Khanabadosh is such a beautiful moment to relish.

Although I tend to agree with Camille on ideas of liberty, I think her ideas of sexual liberty is missing the mark. The sexual liberty and revolution promoted in the 60 and continued by Madonna and Gay men isn't progressive. It is degenerative. I say this as a gay man who used to embrace sexual liberty. Sexual liberty = being a slave to Sex.

Sexuality is a journey a spiritual sacral chakra journey to be exact it has everything to do with its tie to confidence and using physical to enter other realms but if you do things in excess and a certain mentality then it will feel like you are just a slave never do things you really don’t want to a lot of people get pressured and harassed until they do which is what twists the actual transformative journey

Camille Paglia probably wouldn’t disagree with you about that. She thinks western society is in a degenerative state, like late Rome. She doesn’t believe it is preventable though and believes it is a product of a cyclical nature that all societies reach at a certain point of maturation. She dissects and celebrates aspects of this degeneracy, especially in art, but it does not necessarily means she ‘approves’ of it, most often she actually criticizes it. She just believes it’s inevitable and as a cultural commentator she provides critiques. Its an interesting idea though I’m not sure I agree.
