    Hey do you know how to make all the attempted dilutions show up in the software tray after analysis. We are required to report all dilutions we attempt in any analysis. Our instrument is set up to do autodilutions once a sample is out of calibration range, but the software only generates the last attempted dilutions(the autodilutions) in the csv output file, hence we can’t report the initial failed dilution. Please help!

    This was a very informative session and frustrating at the same time. Between big oil, chemical, and plastics companies the money working against us as citizens is overwhelming. If the tobacco industry has taught us nothing else, it's how hard it is to get people to stop using something that is backed by money and special interest lobbying, even when they know it's killing them! I watched a webcast on recycling a month or so ago and was horrified by how little is actually recycled, especially when it comes to plastic. Thank you!

    This area seems to have some important values in terms of wildlife habitat that needs to be identified and promoted rather than a vision of a park with multi-use hardened jogging/trail-biking purposes etc. - a place where elementary school children can have a educational bird nest box project for example has more power politically in my opinion.

  • @nedaustin5690
    @nedaustin5690 2 роки тому

    The New Haven Bioswale is similar. The climate is high desert with snowmelt the primary issue for runoff. Salt is prohibited for snow/ice management on Oregon roads. The Deschutes River is the focus of activities for the city of Bend with multi use parks and all-weather trails adjacent to protected riparian areas which support birds and other wildlife. The Deschutes River has regulatory protections as a Oregon Scenic Waterway and Federal Wild and Scenic River. There are many e-Bird birdwatching hotspots along the river.

    What are the prospects for success of eelgrass projects like this? Are not the environmental conditions which caused eelgrass depletion in the first place still present? Looking at Long Island Sound as a whole have we mapped the area for eelgrass health. Regarding the use of hatchery clams vs wild clams, it would be interesting to know more about this issue. Is it not similar to the adverse sustainability consequences of hatchery fish vs wild fish in rivers and lakes?

    • @SavetheSoundCTNY
      @SavetheSoundCTNY 2 роки тому

      Thank you for all of your great questions! For answers, we turned to Rob Vasiluth of SAVE Environmental, our partner on and the driving force behind the eelgrass restoration project: • The prospect of success for this project in Smithtown Bay is high. The method we’re using here has been done successfully in the Peconic estuary (2018), Shinnecock Bay (2020) and Great South Bay (2021). But there are factors unique to the Smithtown Bay project that had to be addressed. This location has a high tidal range (8+ feet) and eight miles of open water to the north. We planted in deeper water as a best defense against these two dynamic hydraulic turbulent forces. • The conditions that caused the loss of eelgrass in the area are still present, but not to the devastating level as in the 1930s. We have now better water quality, thanks to the Clean Water Act, and regulations have made water pollution less of a concern for the prospect of restoring seagrass. • There is a site suitability index for the Long Island Sound made by Cornell Cooperative Extension. A more extensive site suitability index should be available in the next few years. • Using hatchery clams as opposed to wild clams is a regulatory issue. Wild clam redistribution can and does cause spread of disease and virus. Use of hatchery clams from state-approved hatcheries is the only option.

  • @nedaustin5690

    Save The Sound is doing outstanding work to provide the science based tools for understanding, managing and protecting Long Island Sound. Clearly the status quo is not good enough in some areas and the trends in other areas should be a warning sign.

    What depth do you measure the dissolved oxygen? on the bottom?

    • @SavetheSoundCTNY
      @SavetheSoundCTNY 2 роки тому

      Hi, Peter. For the bays and harbors we monitor in the Unified Water Study, we measure dissolved oxygen 0.5m above bottom (our “bottom” reading) as well as 0.5 m below the surface (“surface” reading). In the open water, we measure DO at 0.5-1 meter off the bottom. The agencies have slightly difference procedures in the field, which explains that range. Hope that's helpful!
