Fertigation for High Tunnels and Small Plots
Wondering how to fertilize through your irrigation system? This workshop introduces the basics for small-scale farmers and gardeners. The workshop covers crop fertility needs, fertilizers suited for drip irrigation, organic fertility, selecting a system that is right for you, and the basic process of incorporating a fertigation unit into a drip irrigation system. For this workshop, Grow Appalachia partnered with Dr. Rachel Rudolph, the Fruit and Vegetable Extension Specialist for Kentucky.

    How long does it take dolomite lime to work? Is it similar to elemental sulfur where it’s a biological process?

    Dolomitic works much better for low ph soils than bulk agricultural lime,I've seen the difference, plus more trace minerals.

    Just for clarity..... Why did you install wood on the hip, then attach the channel? can you not just install the channel directly to the frame? What am i not understanding?? i have seen it installed both ways.

    How did you come up with the diagonal measurement

    • @bounjamin
      @bounjamin Рік тому

      I would guess it was simply the diagonal measurement from the corner pin that intersected with 15 feet... Maybe there is a calculation for this but basically by doing this from both corners they are confirming that the layout is square.

    • @garthwunsch
      @garthwunsch Рік тому

      The answer is in the Pythagorean Theorem. In any right angle triangle, the hypotenuse is equal to the root of the sum of the square of the two adjacent sides. It’s been over 60 years since I took that in high school but I think I remembered it correctly. By way of example here’s a very simplified form in what is called the 3-4-5 triangle. 3x3=9 4x4=16 9+16=25 The square root of 25 is 5 (5 x 5=25) The greenhouse was 48’ long and 15’ wide. Plug those numbers into the 4 and 3 of my example in your calculator. Add the two numbers together and tap the square root sign… that gives you the diagonal (hypotenuse).

  • @mytech6779

    The main issue with small scale stuff(other than the obvious economy of scale) is the market is filled with amateurs which affects what gets sold and what is available used. These people don't know which parts to save or spend money on and often are basing choices off of some historical image, or they don't understand the mechanics/physics. So you get a bunch of non-standard components, from no name companies that don't offer long term support or significant accessory, and frustratingly poor performance. Examples: Rear mounted grading/box blades with a rigid top link and no trailing wheel. Low count disks would be much better as a two axle offset design than the typical four axle, in small widths the leveling action far out weighs the need to conform to rolling hills, a 50ft wide disk needs to conform, a 5ft wide disk needs to cut into bumps and smooth and level. A total lack of real chisel plows(not cultivators with chisel tips) in small width. Cultivators without a standard shank angle, so even if they have bolt on chisel tips, you cant easily get different V-points.

    All of my local “big box” retailers carry a powdered lime that comes in a plastic bag and is always wet and caked together. Are they not storing it improperly or is it supposed to be that way? It’s impossible to spread with something like a drop spreader so I always use the granules.

    What if my Calcium (optimal) and Magnesium (high), but Ph is low? What should I do for that?

    • @growappalachia4730
      @growappalachia4730 3 роки тому

      I think it would depend on what your land-use intent and goals are, but for most types of agricultural production it would still be important to add lime according to your soil test recommendations. This will ensure that the soil pH is in a range that allows nutrients to be available to crops or forages. If your Magnesium is high, it may be best to use calcific lime vs. dolomitic lime since calcific lime typically contains less Magnesium. In many of the soil tests we see here in KY, calcium is extremely high due to the parent materials from which KY soils are derived (limestone). It is still best practice in most cases to add lime to adjust pH if called for in a soil test if planning agriculture production or gardening.
