Once again we have to correct the historical revival of the bel canto composers. Callas and Serafin initiated this revival in the 190's. Both Sutherland and Bonynge acknowledged the impact that Callas had on the expectations of opera houses to present the great bel canto repertoire. Sutherland brought the most perfect voice supported by incredible technical mastery [as evidenced here in the Handel] to the repertoire and kept the renewal going and expanding after Callas. If you read the historical reocrds of opera there have always been the Callas type voices [highly emotive but not always perfectly manageable] and the Sutherland type voice [technically perfect but only somewhat emotionally effective]. Opera must have both to survive and one hopes occasionally for perfection but never achieves it.

MARIO LANZ'S VOICE WAS SO POWERFUL & CONTROLLED NO ELECTRONIC ENHANCEMENT WAS NEEDED EVEN IN CONCERT HALLS. AUGUSTINE LAURA, COMPOSER OF "GRANADA", WAS IN RECORDING STUDIO WHEN MARIO RECORDED HIS COMPOSITION. FIRST TIME LAURA HEARD MARIO LIVE WHICH BROUGHT TEARS TO HIS EYES. HE WAS ASTOUNDED BY MARIO'S VOICE, LATER SAID THAT WAS THE QUINTESSENTIAL RENDITION OF HIS PIECE!

So interesting and unexpected. Kiri’s primary focus seemed to be purity of tone and precision of vocal production, while Gwyneth reveled in the huge ocean of sound she produced. But I always thought they were both very honest singers, trying to communicate their characters through the music in very different ways.

Joan Sutherland did not started all the Rossini, Donizetti, etc. It was Callas who started that and the main reason why Callas became famous - because she revives Bel Canto and Joan Sutherland follow Callas 10 years after!

@@wotan10950 I think it is because she is American, and was in the company of the super rich. I personally prefer other Americans to her, such as Barbara Bonney. For me, Kiri has a much more pleasant voice than Callas. Callas is no where near the quality of Gundula Janowitz either.

I can assure Madame Te Kanawa that Lanza's voice was large enough for opera. I heard him in The Kings Hall, Belfast on Saturday March 29 1958 .Now that venue was a big ugly warehouse- type building which at that time was used for big boxing promotions, and it was the only venue that could accomodate the 10,000 odd ticket holders. It was totally devoid of acoustics, and he sang from the boxing ring accompanied by Callinicos. The amplification was primitive and could only be used for announcing the songs and arias. He performed unamplified and alternated his numbers in four different directions. On the night he was in great voice , although grossly overweight and not very healthy looking. The general concensus afterwards was that he easily filled the four corners. My own assessment of the voice was a Lyric Spinto. Also he seemed to project the voice effortlessly. Finally if the voice was not big enough, why would Koussevitski show interest, or why would Rosati take him on, surely he would have told him, the voice was not big enough. Indeed his loss to opera was a shame.

While it is not in dispute--the sheer beauty of Te Kananwa's voice it is more that a little ironic that she regards ES so highly. For ES the text was very important but one does have the feeling that Dame Kiri hasn;t probed this aspect of either songs or arias. Probably a year or two in a German company would probably have been beneficial.

The moderator KTK says she doesn't no if ML voice was big enough for opera but she loved his records and movies. This is classic addition by subtraction. She no's being a recording artist her self that there is no ML machine that generates that powerful voice just for him.Much smaller voices have had much success in opera, Because at the time of his death at 38 he was on the verge of live opera career. It is condescending to even suggest otherwise. Richard Tucker , and many other artists proclaimed, he would have taken the Opera world by storm. Ian kaye

@SHICOFF1 MY THINKING OF LATE ON LANZA LIVE OPERA HAS CHANGED. I THINK HE HAD A HIGHER CALLING. MIKE TODD THE GREAT MOVIE PRODUCER ,APPROACHED LANZA BEFORE TODD DIED IN PLANE CRASH, TO PRODUCE A SERIES OF COMPLETE OPERAS ON FILM. THESE FILMS WERE TO BE MADE STARING MARIO LANZA AND THE FINAST AVAILABLE SINGERS OF THE DAY. I KNOW HOW MUCH YOU VALUE LIVE IN HOUSE PERFORMANCE, BUT IF THIS PROJECT WAS ACHIEVED, IT WOULD HAVE BEEN A REALISTIC ACHIEVABLE AND WORTHY CONTRIBUTION TO THE OPERATIC ART FORM . LANZA HAD HE LIVED,WOULD HAVE MADE A COMPELLING CONTRIBUTION WORTHY OF HIS UNIQUE GIFTS. IAN KAYE

Who does KTM think that she is to criticize Mario? I agree with Ian Kaye above, that her snide remark about not knowing if Mario's voice "was big enough for opera" but "she loved his records and movies" is truly "classic addition by subtraction". It is like saying that Vivien Leigh was beautiful "when she was young", or Robert Taylor was handsome for "an older man". We'll never know what Mario could have done operatically but frankly; all of his fans are glad that his best milieu was songs from the "Great American Songbook". Cole Porter, The Gershwin brothers, Rodgers and Hart (and Rodgers and Hammerstein), etc. He most likely wouldn't have recorded them if he had joined the snooty, pretentious, narcissistic crowd who think that opera singers are the "only true singers". Mario was handsome, a wonderful actor and the best tenor and baritone who ever lived. He made Pavarotti "the opera singer" pale in comparison.

The voice of Mario Lanza was phenomenal by its power, not to speak about its beauty and emotional content. Those who heard him sing in person were astonished by the power -which is the precise topic of this post - The famous composer and lyricist Sammy Cahn (author of hundreds of songs and so many big hits (All the way, Love and Marriage, Come fly with me, Day by day, Time after time" etc...) wrote for Lanza, and especially the ultra-famous "Be my Love" , music by Licholas Brodszky, and in his memoirs ("I should care", page 225, he wrote : "Now, if you've only heard Mr Lanza on a record or a tape or in a movie, you've never heard him at all, because no mechanical reproduction could capture the startling brilliance of that voice. It scared the hell out of you. I believe he had a soft pedal and a loud pedal in his throat..... I wish we could have Mario Lanza with us today"". Mario Lanza filled the Royal Albert Hall in London with no microphone , just the voice and a Steinway played by Director Constantine Callinicos. The RAH has and had around 7-8000 seats and an awful acoustic if no acoustics at all (which has been restored decades after Lanza's passing) and his concerts there were huge successes. Incredible. Same thing when recording for the movie "The Great Caruso" with some stars of the New York Metropolitan Opera House, who were amazed by the power of his voice when they saw him step back from the microphone. The sound engineers explained:" it's because the power of his voice saturated the recording machines and microphones"; . There's a lot to say and read, so many d oustanding biographies in english, italian and even in french - among them, "Mario Lanza, La Voix du Coeur", The Voice from the heart" (2022), by your servant. Best wishes to all and may Mario Lanza's soul sing in Heaven.
