GE Opal Nugget Ice Maker Gen 2 - Part 11

Just a quick video from my phone, but I may have found a solution to the squealing issue and this may be a simple solution that many of you can try without having to take apart your entire unit. If this is indeed a solution, this is an absolutely dumb issue that probably GE could solve.

I DID NOT CLEAN OR DO ANY MAINTENANCE ON THE ICE MAKER FOR 3 YEARS ... just to be able to show you guys the result. I absolutely DO NOT recommend anyone treat their brand new ice maker like this AT ALL. You should be regularly cleaning it...

Looks like I'll be opening this up soon. Those of you who have been complaining about the quality of my videos need to calm down a bit. I made these originally quickly just to be helpful for people who had ice machines. I'm not some UA-cam influencer or something nor am I an expert on GE products or know anything about these in depth. If you want that I'm sure there are more knowledgeable peopl...

Part 1 of a series of videos I wanted to make about the GE Opal Nugget Ice Maker. I have had a GE Profile Opal Nugget Ice Maker for a few years and it's a bit of a love hate relationship. I wanted to talk about my experience with the 1.0 and also show the new 2.0 version. Full playlist: ua-cam.com/video/Aa3Ltn8O7-8/v-deo.html
I used a baby bottle cleaner to clean that tank.
Hello there with this machine do you still use boiling water to clean
Sometimes yes I will still do a run through with hot water to loosen things up and clean the hoses.
So what was the solution?
it depends on what was causing the squealing. its different depending on the cause.
@@ElaineBarlowok that’s not what we asked. We asked what was your solution
Thank you for this video. I will be throwing out my Gen 1
Good choice. Best of luck with Gen 2 if you decide to get one. ❤
@@ElaineBarlow I purchased it today. Thank you ♥️.
Bro, use vinegar to clean the insides. You have like a ton of sediment aka white shit on it.
So, you used the same water that you used with the gen 1?
In the Gen 2? Yes same water. We have only ever used spring or RO water. Our tap water has never been safe to drink. Same water. Gen 2 is built better and designed different.
This video is helpful. I’m currently deep cleaning my squeaking machine today and this is a job that’s going to take me all day!
best of luck!
Mines doing this, what was the solution?
Do you use the side reservoir? Have you cleaned it thoroughly? I need a bit more information from you. There are multiple causes depending on a few factors.
I know this know this video is 2 years old, but i would recommend that you use filtered water. I have a high end filter on the water that i pour into here and after a year it looks very clean. That mold has to come somewhere and i would not be surprised if it was coming out of your water source. Thanks for sharing
Thanks but that wasn't the problem and I was using filtered and reverse osmosis water. The Gen 1 are just garbage. I have no mold with my Gen 2. If you watch the entire series that is explained.
You got me to clean out my gen 1. It wasnlt over the hot side aonit wasnt that bad for me. These things break all the time though
Sounds like someone must be saying Out of sight Out of mind
I have no idea what this comment even means.
I own a gen 1, I opened it a few months ago and completely washed it, it has mould again. It’s almost pushing my trash it button. I heard there’s another brand that uses a completely different design and it’s supposed to not build mould (at least as much) but it’s always out of stock
Gen 1 should all be trashed. There is nothing to do about how badly they are designed. You won't be able to fix it or solve the problem. Just get rid of it and get a gen 2 or different brand.
This is encouraging! After seeing your first video of the gen1 nastiness, I wasn't sure I wanted to buy an ice maker again. I'm gonna get this one now!!! Thanks for digging in and showing us the way!!!
Thank you so so much for this kind comment. Be sure to watch all my followup videos as well 💗
Did you figure it out? Is it the side reservoir?
For me it is yes. When I don't use it, I never have the squeaking problem. I think there are two different kinds of squeaking ... one is definitely having to do with build up inside the machine ... the other seems to have to do with water pressure and air. If you empty the machine and both hoses and only use the built in reservoir see if you still have the problem after you have run vinegar through it (for basic cleaning, hard water etc).
Very curious what you did. I’ve got this apart on my counter now because of this squealing issue!
Do you use the side reservoir?
stop using the reservoir. Empty the entire unit of water including all the hoses make sure they are clear. Only fill the base reservoir and tell me if you still get squealing after that. Also do a good cleaning with any kind of ice cleaner or vinegar or whatever you prefer. Like run it through several times. Tell me what happens.
Thank you for all the videos Elaine! I am NC and run my Opal 2.0 on filtered well water. I have this above normal squealing issue as well like most people probably do. It seems to occur randomly and I have not logged it to see if there is a pattern. I have not heard it much in the past few months, once as I recall. It was happening more back in Nov-Dec a few times a week so perhaps related to colder weather? Anyway, when this occurs here I start with a quick unplug for 1-5 minutes, then replug, let it run, and usually this will resolve the issue. If not I will opt to unplug it again for a slightly longer time until it stops. I did the descaling process (without opening the unit) per the manual several months for the first time after the first year of use and that seemed to help with the general noise and louder squealing for a day or few but it did return shortly after, and it still randomly returns so that did not seem to solve this issue but may help for the short term.
do you use a side reservoir?
@@ElaineBarlow Yes I do, and speaking of Opal challenges our default oval reservoir one had problems where it started leaking at that join area where the two parts of the water container come together. We had to get that replaced under warranty and they sent the larger rectangle one as a replacement and no problem since. That makes me wonder if that is a known issue for those containers.
@@gregpparrish stop using the reservoir. Empty the entire unit of water including all the hoses make sure they are clear. @@ElaineBarlow I will try this when I hear the loud squealing again. Right now I have a new issue where the unit is leaking water out of the bottom all over my counter when attempting to make ice. We have seen a similar issue months back where we have minimal water and the Opal support site reported this as defrost condensation but now it makes a tiny bit of ice if any and just leaks most all of the water from the reservoir out of the bottom of the unit so it is now not working as it should. We noticed this started a few weeks back and it was still making ice but has gotten worse and is now unusable so we are about to call for warranty support or replacement.
Mine made that sound I put air tool oil in the gearbox and it stop making that noise
Not necessary for me at all
Wow- that was impressive. Definitely expected a lot more gunk in there. I’m glad you opened that up to check.
The whole purpose of this channel was the abuse my ice maker for 3 years just so I could open it up and show you guys.
Just love my Oral
Hate to tell you but it’s on the road to death. Best bet is to contact GE and see if they will replace. You will probably get a refurbished model. Hit or miss how long the replacement last. I’m on my 6th unit - 2 new, 4 replacements. 😢
If you've watched my channel which I assume you haven't for 3 years you'd know that I have never had any problems with my Gen 2. It's hardly on the road to death in fact its working great now that I figured out the problem.
Hard water? Try the wash cycle with some descaler (for ice makers). That fixed my issue.
Nope that's not the problem
I actually solved the issue very simply.
What was the solution?
Mine does the same at times. I just disconnect it. Wish I had a better answer
I think I have figured out what causes it. I will post my findings.
the chiller fins need cleaning
nope but thanks for commenting
Thanks for continuing the good fight. I’ve returned 3 2.0’s one is still ticking. But my ice taste disgusting
I dunno what to say to that. I've had zero problems with this for the past 3 years and I have treated it terribly. My ice tastes great because I don't use bad water in it. Gen 2 is the best unit yet.
yes mine squealed on occasion crazy loud then finally died. Cleaned it but not weekly like it says but that is a lot of work to clean that much for ice. They need to figure out a better process.
Mine is working perfectly. Will upload a final video in a few moments. It's like new.
Thank you for the video series. Exactly what I was looking for!
Glad it was helpful!
I have the newer model and having ALL THE SAME ISSUES As the older unit!!! Its so discouraging
Thanks to your videos I am purchasing the Gen 2. Appreciate your honesty.
It is not difficult to take this apart and bleach is not dangerous. Just run enough water through it.
Well done! I purchased the Gen 1 by mistake and was thinking of keeping it instead of returning it and getting the Gen 2. Not anymore, it's going back! Thank you!😄
Would you recommend getting the newer model or should I throw away the gen 1 and get a completely different brand? So sick of it being so gross and dirty and making loud af noises constantly
I have not had any problems with my Gen 2 and yes I recommend you throw the original Gen 1 away. As I have said on many posts ... the design itself is flawed and no matter what you do, that will not change. Gen 2 is a much better build and I STILL haven't had any problems with it.
Great video ! Very informative. I recently picked up the 1.0 Opal and was debating splurging for the 2.0
I ordered the Gen2 because my Gen1 wasn’t working. But I opened up my Gen1 inside because of your video. OMG! GROSS! And I cleaned it monthly. Miraculously Gen1 is working again. We shall see. 🤷🏼♀️
Gen1 has a lot of problems in the design that CREATE perfect conditions for CONTINUOUS mold growth no matter how often you clean it. Especially depending on what kind of water you have. Glad its working again for you but you will go mad trying to keep it clean ... Did you get the Gen2? I'd just switch to that.
@@ElaineBarlow I only use distilled water so the fact that it was that bad was mind-blowing. I did get the Gen2, but I’m going to move the Gen1 to our boat since we are only on it seasonally. Cleaning it before storing it will just become part of the closing the boat up process lol
Thanks I was going to attempt to fix refurbished myself a gen1 from fb for $50 but no thanks mold
Stay far far away from any gen1 machines. Seriously. The design is simply flawed ... if you want an ice maker there are so many different ones on the market. You don't even have to go GE ... just don't get any gen1 ge from the original opal line.
Its okay to say its a good unit after a junky OPAL V1. Hoe often do we clean our Ice from refrigerator units never.
Not sure why you post this stuff. You seem to have some kind of hostility that you need to release. Please do it elsewhere thanks.
you have a ton of sediment in your water you can see it. I only use filtered water plus have added the filter into the machine. Clean with super hot water and ice maker cleaner from Amazon. I live in Arizona we go through almost two gallons a day of ice. Hopefully the machine will keep up, if not I will buy the industrial nugget ice maker.
I'm not sure what you're talking about and I can tell you didn't watch the whole series. We never use tap water in our first gen ... ever. We don't even drink our own tap water. We use RO water or filtered water to make our ice. This series of videos is about my experience with both Gen 1 and Gen 2 ice makers ... do make sure you have all the necessary information before making comments thanks.
I’ve had 3 of these. My current one I only use distilled water. 2 years and no mold…yet, but it started the dreaded squeaking. I can only describe it as how I would sound wearing rubber underwear and I’m a big boy. How’s that for a visual.
I haven't done a thing to my Gen 2 since getting in December of 2021 when I did my first video. In fact I haven't even cleaned it once in order to be able to show you guys something when I finally open it. I have had ZERO problems with it. It still works perfectly and no mold at all.
Ever opened up a kurig? Any of these appliances that use water like these do build up nasty stuff.
Keurig no. I don't use pods for coffee. I drink real coffee. 😄 But yes ... any MACHINE needs proper cleaning and for the most part almost no one cleans ice machines properly. This video is not really about that though ... It's about defective Gen 1s ... and their bad builds.
how come you dont use those filters that u can put in there. all you have is that little screen. page 11 of gen 1 manual
They are useless and at this point ... if you watched the video at all ... I literally JUST received the ice maker and didn't have one yet. But in general they are useless and I use R.O or spring water in mine so I don't need a filter.
Elaine -- would you recommend using the water filter? I did not see you go over that in your video. Also, with or without the filter what water do you recommend. Thanks.
I actually don't use them in the Gen 2 at all mainly because I am only using RO water in it. But normally, I would say if you have the usual horrendous tap water a filter will help somewhat.
Great videos. I actually run CLR through the machine followed up with a bleach solution then several times rinses and that stuff works great! I also attached a small auxiliary fan to the side actuated by a WiFi Sonoff TM16 temperature activation module so as to automatically turn the fan on at a specific temperature. The unit would just not make any ice until I figured out these Gen 1 units have a horrible ventilation system and the compressor easily overheats and just shuts down. Would be nice if GE or someone would've mentioned that! 😂
Thank you, Elaine!!!
Thank you!! The first thing I noticed that was a BIG difference and a huge mistake (that they have now fixed for an extra $&&) was the size of water reservoir. The first was exactly 1 gallon which made nice if you were buying purified water. The 2.0 is only .75 gallon. They now have introduced 2.0 XL that has the 1 gallon reservoir.
What tube on gen 1 goes to the side reservoir?
Have you experienced harder ice? My machine doesn't squeal anymore but it produces harder ice which is not nearly as pleasent as the chewable ice. We use distilled water.
Buy your water at Costco, Kirkland brand is reverse osmosis & since switching to that we haven’t had any hard water issues at all.
Hello Elaine. Thank you for these videos. I’m not having a great experience with my 2.0. At a little over 6 months it started making a terrible screeching noise. I run the descale process over and over as I’m guessing it’s a hard water issue, but it doesn’t help. GE has offered to look at it for $250, surprising because I thought it had a 1 year warranty. If they can’t repair they will refund $125, but I’m still out the rest on a new and expensive appliance. I’m wondering if you have any suggestions on something other than the descaling process that I can look at before deciding on sending this in? Thank you!
NEVER use tap water in your ice maker. Always use reverse osmosis or filtered water or spring water. We have extremely hard water where I live, in fact there's all kinds of issues with the water and we NEVER drink out of the tap. I live in an apartment and couldn't alter too much of my plumbing but I got a Waterdrop RO Under Sink system (www.waterdropfilter.com/) and I use that water for drinking, making ice, and coffee. I haven't had to do much descaling with the 2.0 but I use this (www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01LZK0UG3) on my old ice maker. Most problems with all these ice makers (except for the utterly defective Gen 1s which were terribly designed and faulty from the beginning ... ) is often user error. People don't take care of them or clean them as often as they should and get mold, or they use the wrong water etc. The machines work when you do what you need to and take care of them. My Gen 2 hasn't given me any trouble since I first got it and I haven't done anything to it as far as cleaning or even maintenance so when I do my follow up video you all can see what it looks like inside as far as build up but normally, I'd do an HOCL run through once a week and a descale, if needed, monthly ... that's it.
@@ElaineBarlow thank you for the info. We do use filtered water. I think it’s still pretty hard though so might look into that under sink filter. I went ahead and pulled it apart and cleaned the interior hoses and tank and it’s working great again. I would have never thought to check this without your videos. Mine was nasty, and clogged. I’ll be curious to see what yours looks like when you open it up.
