Bluebell Railway Giants of Steam 11th October 2024
I had a couple of hours to squeeze in on the Bluebell Railway, between collecting my MGB from its garage in East Grinstead (where it was getting its MoT even though it doesn't legally need one) and collecting my daughter from school. Luckily for me, those two hours included uphill runs by A4 60007 "Sir Nigel Gresley" and LBSCR Marsh Atlentic 32424 "Beachy Head" out of Sheffield Park, in what turned out to be a brilliantly sunny afternoon, with little or no wind, ideal for video with my drone.
60007 is of course an original A4; 32424 is a replica. If only we had preserved the original, instead of scrapping it, we would have saved the hundreds of thousands of pounds enthusiasts have contributed towards building the replica (hundreds of thousands of pounds that should have gone towards maintaining existing steam locomotives, also preserved at great cost, but some of which are now rusting to the rails once again.) I well remember my uncle - an RCTS member - instructing me, in 1958, to go to Victoria to see the last run of "Beachy Head" before it encountered the scrapper's torch. I did, and underlined it in my Ian Allan ABC, but I did not have a camera with me. Stupid boy!
As for the A4's, there are of course 6 extant out of the original 35. A fellow enthusiast, (Brian "Coco" Cacoulis, a former fireman from Kings Cross "top shed" in the 1960's) always maintained that he would commit suicide when the last A4 was scrapped. He probably realised, even then, that at least one - probably "Mallard", the 1938 record breaker, would be preserved, so that he would not have to make good on his promise!
On the Tuesday prior to the Friday when these clips were filmed, I had been tipped off by a friend that 60007 would be coming south from Crewe, to perform its fortnight or so stint on the Bluebell. Courtesy of Railcam, I watched it remotely passing Watford with its support coach; in the afternoon, I filmed it passing my local station, Sanderstead, en route for East Grinstead, now in the rain.
However the Friday was glorious and I wish I could have spent all day on this superb railway!

Another excellent London Bus Museum-sponsored running day, made even more special by the sparkling September sunshine. Although shot in only two locations - Locksbottom and Bromley North - this 16 minute video shot in 4K, hopefully captures the flavour of the event, in which many of the "usual suspects" participated. For those who enjoy a pint with their bus-spotting, it should be noted that so...

Amersham & District Motorbus Society have once again presented an excellent day of vintage bus running, made even better by the iconic location - Windsor town and castle - and the glorious sunshine. Of course on this beautiful summer Sunday the town was full of tourists, locals and - today - mostly elderly bus spotters! If you weren't able to make it, this 8 minute video should give you a flavo...

Another London Bus Museum - sponsored running day, bringing vintage buses out on the road for a day. The day started sunny, but by the time the first buses arrived in my neck of the woods, it had turned gloomy, and I would not usually publish film shot in such miserable conditions, but actually I have realised that part of the attraction of these older buses is not only the sight, but also thei...

In the late 1990's and early 2000's, many steam railway enthusiasts would descend upon the Caribbean island of Cuba, between Christmas and Easter, to see and photograph the old, manly American, steam engines, which ran the Zafra (Sugar harvest) trains bringing the sugar cane from the fields into the mills (Centrales) for processing. This little island in the sun, with its friendly girls to whil...

The 1990's marked the end of broad gauge steam in Pakistan, although the metre gauge system, centred upon Mirpur Khas in Sind Province, carried on until 2005. Many were taken by Enthusiast Holidays, a tour operato...

Thanks for this trip down memory lane. I studied at Ealing Technical College in the early 70s and used to regularly travel home for the weekend, starting on the 65 from Ealing to Surbiton station. Cost; 10p! Sometimes friends and I would go out on Saturday to Chessington Zoo, thus doing the whole route. In those days there was a cap on the fare of 12p, so that was the price, as long as you didn't change bus. What value for a bus trip of well over an hour.

How fantastic to hear from you! 5918, along with two other steam locomotives (3020 and 2409) remain, as far as we know, in the works at Nairobi in near working order, and we hope that we will once again, soon, be able to negotiate a contract with KR to run more railtours with them, as we have done in the past. Meanwhile, however, there have been disturbing reports that some locomotives from the Nairobi Museum - such as 5930 - have been moved to a site in Uhuru Gardens. When asked about this, KR Management and even the Curator of the Museum, have been silent. Do you actually live in Nairobi? If so, are you able to throw more light on these rumours?

Kirpal Singh Sandhu, the driver of the 5918 Mount Gelai giant steam locomotive, is a legend in the mind of those boys who grew up in Kenya in the 1960s & 1970s. It was every boy’s dream to drive that titanic machine which thundered past and recreated the romance of steam train. @vckallen 2 роки тому

Dear Mr Shah Thank you very much for your kind comments. As far as we know, "Mount Gelai" together with 3020 and 2409 - which are the three potential operational steam locomotives, subject to some fairly substantial repairs, are in No. 6 shed in the main works at Nairobi, and are safely stored there. However there have been some worrying reports in the last few months that other locomotives, previously in the open-air museum adjacent to the main station in Nairobi, and including Garratt 5930, have been moved to a new site at Uhuru Gardens. It would be very useful to know if these exhibits are safe, and that they have not been quietly sold to a scrap merchant! as has happened in some countries. I am guessing you are actually in Kenya, so if you have any information we would greatly welcome your advice on info@enthudsiasthols.com Vic Allen
