We then went into a Questions and Answers section where we tackled some questions put to us by our listeners. You can see John's page here: thetroublesarchive Here's the book John mentioned: Explaining Northern Ireland: Br...

It was a dark evening in February, 1983, when three armed, masked men arrived to the home of Jim Fitzgerald. His family were locked in a room. One of the men said to him "We have come for Shergar. We want £2 million for him." He was taken at gunpoint to a nearby stable where Shergar the horse was sleeping. The horse was loaded into a horsebox, and never seen again. What followed was a mystery w...

Переглядів 10 тис.2 місяці тому
The two socialist Republican paramilitary groups were the INLA, Irish National Liberation Army and the IPLO, the Irish People's Liberation Organization. These were two organisations who sought to fight against the colonial occupation of British Rule and free the working class of capitalistic dominance. However, instead of romantic struggle they would instead set their sights on each other. Form...

This week's episode focuses on the life of Father Patrick Ryan, a Catholic priest who had a unique relationship with the Provisional IRA and Libyan Dictator, Muammar Gaddafi. Through Father Ryan, the Provisional IRA received millions in cash, but it was his engineering work with Provisional IRA bombs, which would end up saving the lives of many paramilitaries… while allowing them to improve the...

Every stranger entering any pub in Northern Ireland during the Troubles was suspect until vouched for especially in the very clannish rural areas where everyone knew each other, you can be sure as soon as Nairac showed his face someone would have been making the relevant inquiries as to who the f he was . The intelligence system in nationalist areas was like overlapping spider webs right across the country and if you were in any place you shouldn’t have been you’d be sussed out , to underestimate the risks would be deadly as we see with Nairac . Come into my parlour said the spider to the fly. Hopefully our Troubles are far behind us as they were awful times for everyone 🙏

A person who has reached this level in the criminal world is on borrowed time. This is actually a ting , they don't internalise the real danger their in. As we say, they lose their edge. Greed and jealousy comes in many gises. The second you turn that corner the clock starts and the odds get shorter. The few who slip through the net are people who know the value of dirty money, but even they have their Achilles Heel.✌️☘️

The RSM history has been deliberately ignored by media for example Peter Taylor and I believe by the Provisional movement . As a Republican Socialist who fought in the conflict I was subsequently captured and jailed for 25 Yrs my contribution my struggle was belittled by certain quarters of the provisional movement , media and the Provisional political leadership gave no credit to RSM VOLUNTEERS . Not all but a lot in leadership and political leadership . A lot is made of fueding even by you and your contributor. The Provos feuded twice also and as many people combatant and innocent where killed it was just ours was more recent . Our men were on the blanket no wash protest died on hunger strike and hurt the enemy as much as we could we also served hundreds of years in gaol . My trial was infront of a diplock court like my provisional comrades . My enemies where the same people. So it’s not by accident that this black propaganda has always been orchestrated to demonise the RSM as some crazy band of rabble undisciplined and ignorant to logic or ideal .

I'm loving this podcast. My family was directly involved in the War of Independence with in a very active town in Galway. The Troubles have always interested me despite the fact I never lived in Ireland and don't have the insight into it that others do. I doubt anyone below a certain age outside of the Irish orbit even know what went down there. Its definitely something that needs to be covered in schools in a very factual and unbiased way.

Someone needs to do a theisis into the psychological causes of Loyalist violence and its manifestations, it goes beyond the political. The culture seems to revel in violence. From songs to murals to acts of violence, which verge more into psychopathology then politics, I refer to the Shankill Butchers, UFF, Michael Stone, Lenny Murphy etc. Using the name of a childrens tv show as a name of a place where people were tortured and beaten to death is part of that. It has alot of similarites with militias that operate in ultra Nationalist states as deathsquads. It is a symptom of a dysfunctional state.

Jean Mcconvile, was a poor single Mother enticed into becoming a low level expendable tout by the British, she was then sacrificed. By killing her the IRA fell into their trap, the repercussions of her killing went on for decades. They should have just expelled her. Interestingly women are often far more dedicated and fanatical then their male comrades.
