      @@alhambraorchardapiary4882 Thanks! One more question. I am about to start my first hive. Do I leave a small gap at the bottom? I was gifted a hive but it didn’t come with spacers at the bottom … it’s just a long narrow gap when the deep is placed on the bottom board.

    • @alhambraorchardapiary4882
      @alhambraorchardapiary4882 4 місяці тому

      @memdass747 Most of our bottom boards have a 3/8 gap. During the heat of summer I like to crack a lid for extra ventilation.

    Great simple split video! How woukd you place a cut out swarm cell into a split?

    • @alhambraorchardapiary4882
      @alhambraorchardapiary4882 4 місяці тому

      You will need to be sure the bees know they are queenless. Then make a thumbprint into the comb and stick your cell in the depression. Look up Gus Mitchell he has a video of using cut queen cells on youtube that does a good job of showing how this is done.

    I put out some traps they were 3 traps all together, 2 of them were single deeps with 2 or 3 frames with either old foundation / empty foundation / partials and one was a double medium with 4~ frames with propolis I don't think there was comb in that one. I sprayed it a few times with swarm commander on the entrance and the inside. But since it was on other people's property I put them on Milk Crates to keep them a bit off the ground. Do you think they will still work or do you think they're too low and I should put them higher up next time?

    • @alhambraorchardapiary4882
      @alhambraorchardapiary4882 5 місяців тому

      I've caught swarms in hive equipment stacked on the ground so for sure possible. From what I've read higher is better but not a necessity.

    What does the bees wax add to the bar?

    • @alhambraorchardapiary4882
      @alhambraorchardapiary4882 5 місяців тому

      It's hardens the bar and helps it last longer, and it helps add creaminess to the lather.

    I used a little bit more water on paper because of evergreen scions. Set +1 celsius on my fridge, but thermometer shows approximately "0" . Sometimes temperature drops to "-1" celsius and I can feel the paper becomes slightly stiff in zipper bags. The temperature in the fridge varies between +1 and -1. Will it damage my scions?

    • @alhambraorchardapiary4882
      @alhambraorchardapiary4882 6 місяців тому

      To be honest we have never grafted evergreens. With that being said I would be concerned that temp will freeze and damage your scions. If it were me, I would bump it up to at least a little above freezing.
