As everyone in Ottawa Hills knows, tradition is a big part of our lives and helps to keep our schools and community so special. This year, Ottawa Hills Local Schools introduces a new tradition: a State of the District video. It's a new way to share, through images and video, our accomplishments in recent years, and especially 2021.

Elementary School students this week heard from Chris Soentpiet, a children's author and illustrator. Mr. Soentpiet talked about how he creates his books and even drew sample illustrations using students as volunteer models. He also left behind a custom drawing on the hallway wall near the Library Media Center. Watch this time-lapsed video to see the creation come to life.

The fundraising campaign to reinvent academic and support services across district buildings is under way through the Full STEAM Ahead Capital Campaign. The campaign starts one year after Villagers approved a $8.5 million bond levy. That levy made it possible to sell bonds to raise money to build The Foundry and to make extensive upgrades to existing STEAM classrooms. Past and future donations ...

An Ottawa Hills fall isn't complete without the transformation of the Elementary School "Golden Tree." Retired 6th Grade teacher Marcia Okun, whose second-floor classroom still offers one of the best viewing platforms, returned recently to see her beloved tree.

The nation is celebrating National School Psychology Week (Nov. 8-12) this week to highlight the important work school psychologists and other educators do to help all students thrive. For an 8th straight year, 5th graders at Ottawa Hills Elementary School are celebrating their freedoms as Americans by thanking the veterans who made those freedoms possible. This year, they shared their thoughts in letters and essays as part of a special Veterans Day project.

Good luck to our boys' cross-country team at States on Nov. 6. And good luck to sophomore JoAnna Kelley who is running as an individual. She races at 9 a.m., the boys at 10 a.m. States take place at Fortress Obetz/Memorial Park, 4175 Alum Creek Dr., in Obetz, Ohio. Green Bear Nation gave them rousing send-offs!

The Annual Halloween Parade at the Elementary School moved indoors today but the energy and fun was the same as usual. The event kicked off with the Big Reveal of which famous duo students in the 6th Grade had voted on. The winner: Shrek and Donkey, worn by Superintendent Dr. Adam Fineske and Principal Jeremy Bauer, respectively.
