I have tons of home recorded cassettes and 8 tracks, probably I have rare stuff that I don't even know is rare. I always am looking for radio station airchecks and stuff like that.
I was playing around with a Columbia portable, and I had a screw that I was adjusting, and it wasn't stopping the crosstalk. So I went here on UA-cam and your video was the first video I came upon. Now I realize that I was adjusting the azimuth screw lol. Very informative walkthrough video. Thank you for sharing!
Great video bro! Thanks much!
Nice video, always great seeing new ideas/approaches on fixing 8 tracks. You're having as much fun with making 8 track videos as I did. Keep up the great work (and Sainthood patience)!
Where do I buy the metal tape?
@@tuongha8483 you can buy foil splice tape on Amazon, eBay, or 8trackavenue.com as well as a whole slough of 8 track repair items.
@@8trackfm thanks so much !
This helped me, thank you very much. I found a damaged Willie Nelson tape and was able to successfully stitch it back together and wind it. 🎉
Here kind of late....new to the hobby like just "getting ready" to start. Where did you get that spicing block?
Okay Mr. Fancy Schmancy "splice block" which side does the splice tape go on? The outside where the tape head can read it or on the inside where you can't see it? I got me a humdinger on Ebay that's repairing everybody's tapes this way and we're running into heaps of trouble here with tracks sounding funny.
The foil splice goes on the side of the tape that contacts the head. Sorry I am just responding now (a month later), I am just now seeing your comment.
Nice work! I currently have quite a few respools going. Takes probably more than the patience of a saint!
Back in the day when 8 tracks were popular I didnr even realize these changers existed! I almost picked up one of these at a garage sale last year! The owner and I agreed on a price. I gave him the money and was about to pick up the player when his daughter arrived with their lunch and became aware of the transaction. She went ballistic, telling him he couldn't sell it then realized he already had. She then began berating him for selling it. He and I had a short discussion resulting in him returning my money and him keeping the player. I didnt want it bad enough to cause a problem between a father and daughter as it would break my heart if I had one with my daughter. Hope it worked out for them.
That was very big of you to do that. Not many would
So here's a dumb question from someone who is new to this: When I opened up my broken tape I only found one cut end. Where and how do I find the other end?
It will likely be tucked in at the center of the hub. There are two methods of retrieving this end of the tape. One, using a toothpick at the center of the hub to pull the end of the tape up. Or two, if you have an empty cartridge wind the tape onto the empty reel but make sure you leave some of the tape sticking up as when you transfer the tape back to the original reel you will be feeding the original reel from this area of tape. I will make a video on this process over the weekend
Thank you!
Nice job! Thanks. I have a loose bundle of an 8 track mystery tape that I want to experiment with. I guess I have a 50/50 chance of getting it on in the right direction.

Thank you. Thank you! THANK YOU! I purchased the same 8 Track cassette twice. First one I opened and tried to rewind I ended up ruining the tape. When I got the same tape the second time my player ate it. Determined not to loose out twice, I found your video and was successful in saving the cassette. 😉
You are most welcome. I am glad that my video helped. Happy tracking
You can iron wrinkled tape also with an iron set on low temp on the opposite side of the audio over a shower/bath towel. You just make a couple of quick passes with the iron and it takes all the wrinkles out. I've seen tapes that were so badly wrinkled and thought they couldn't be saved till I learned that technique and got them almost back to brand new. In some cases you might hear a little bit of drown out like where the music will drop down a little almost like the end of a song and then pick back up. That happens if you're not quick enough and leave the iron on the tape too long.
You must be doing this in a mirror since everything appears to be flipped.
No it depends which camera is being used on the phone. Thats what causes reverse effect lol.
I have a Magnavox VE16-11-AB 8 track player and i couldn't find the adjusting screw im getting the crosstalk slightly. any idea?
It'll either be on top of the player or on the bottom. Usually it's a slotted brass screw.
If you have trouble, send me photos of the disassembled unit and I should be able to help out by looking at the photos
Perfect عالی
Thanks for the video, it was helpful and now some of my old tapes work.
I am glad this video was helpful. That is definitely one of my goals with these videos.
Great 👍 job man
Do you use a clothing iron to iron out the creases of the tape?
I am one of the few that doesn't. I tried once and ended up fudging the tape up.
Good video
I usually use a turntable to wind the tape back on the spool. Lot easier I get it started with a small screwdriver and a pice of scotch tape to hold it to the center spool first, unless it’s a small tape not long.
Hi, great video. I'm wondering if I need to do this. Just new to 8 track - tapes and machines. I was trying to get a Centrex RH60 that was slow even with new belts and lubrication. It sort of ate a tape and abut 2 ft of tape came out. I opened up the cart - it's one of those tabless glued ones. I slowly tried to put the tape back on takeup side and ended up with two extra twists. Am I right in thinking that this due to me pullng out tape from the supply side whilst trying to fix things. If I don't want to do a total respool, can I just cut and splice it, if I don't mind the 'break'? I have reel to reel splicing tape. Cheers
You might be able to get away with cutting the tape so you can untwist it. When you are ready to put the ends of the tape back together' you can use scotch tape on the graphite side of the tape to fuse the ends back together
@@8trackfm Thanks for the advice. I just did that. Did a decent splice and put back together and it's playing in my Panasonic Dynamite player. I did notice that the tape doesn't come off the supply side easily. I wonder if that's due to it's age/ potentially not having been played for a long time/ having too much tape - it's a Time Life (Jelly Roll Morton) with a long play time. This has turned out to be the most reliable of the 3 machines I bought - the others being the Centrex RH60 and a realistic portable stereo player. The Centrex seems to struggle (slow) with the cartridges with more tape eg the Time Life whist a shorter tape seems to play ok. The Realistic had bad cross talk - I opened it up and it's due to the plastic casing around the head cracking in one corner. I think it's a common-ish problem, and I'd seen some people using a ziptie to fix it. I had no such luck getting a zip tie around and superglue didn't work either.
@@choboutube I use a soldering gun to melt the two broken parts of the head shell together. I have had great success with that. You just have to be very gentle so you don't over melt the plastic.
You can also use gorilla glue but I have found the plastic weld method to be better
LOL there is something about the geometry of 8 track that is defeating me. As I was playing the 'splice-rescued' cartridge, it got to the track change/ metal stripe, so I decided to redo this bit. I pulled out a bit of tape loop to allow me to put the tape onto the splicing tool. Somehow this introduced one extra loop. In the end, I had to cut again and splice (non metallic) again. Lucky I have extra copies of this tape. This is my 'learning tape'.
just curious what was the name of the album on the 8 track tape you were repairing?
Sadly I can't remember. I think it might have been a Johnny Horton tape but i am not too sure
The World of Johnny Horton

8 track tapes had up to 90 minutes of play time. The "8 track" refers to 2 stereo channels spread over 4 programs or channels if you will

You are most welcome. I hope this video was helpful
Hey there. I'd like to know: How do you repair an 8-track player that won't change programs automatically? Thank you!😀
There are a few things that could cause this. Dirty track change sensor, the bearing that the track change cam could be gummed up, some players have a rubber O-ring that is wrapped around the track change cam that may be dry rotted. I will make a video about this in the near future. Another issue that is common is if your 8-TRACK player has the plastic head bracket, these are known to break causing the head to float as opposed to move with the track change mechanism. This plastic head bracket can be repaired by various methods. Depending where the break is i will either use a soldering iron to melt the broken ends together or i will use crazy glue or jb weld to bond the broken ends. Thank you for your comment. I hope that my suggestions helped.
Hi, is there a model for the repair tape (the silver roll)? I'm in a hurry to fix my 8 track cassette
I found my roll of foil sensing tape on ebay. Here's the link www.ebay.ca/itm/363670148037?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=cZiRlmVGSVe&sssrc=2349624&ssuid=aP_LevwRRbW&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY
You can also find some on Amazon as well JVCC MPF-01 Metalized Polyester Film Tape [Mirror-Like]: 1/4 in. x 72 yds. (Silver) a.co/d/iRsmKhS
Do you know why one of my 8track tapes is worbly? It goes in and out of tune and speeds up and slows down. I’ve tested other 8 tracks and they sound fine, so it leads me to think it’s a problem with that specific 8 track tape and not the 8 track player.
Sounds like your tape is wound too tight. This happens often when the fast forward function is used on players equipped with this. If you are able to play the tape up to the foil splice, do so. Once the track change occurs, pull the cartridge out of your machine. You will then have to take the cartridge apart. Once you have opened the cartridge, you will need to cut the tape at the splice, then pull some tape from the center of the hub (I'd say 6-8 inches), then either tape the two ends back together with scotch tape (applying tape to the back side aka graphite side of the tape). Then start pulling the tape again from the center of the spool which will start winding the tape back onto the hub. If you should have any difficulties with this please let me know and I will gladly post a video of this process.
Hey man...watched both your videos on the adjustments of these vintage machines...very informative, I'm now a subscriber!! Thought you might like to check out my marble machine...the "marble spinner" that I just finished is built around one of these 8 track mechanisms and a rotating c.d. check out the "engineering and building the marble spinner" playlist, I think you might get a kick out of it....
Very interesting.
Excellent video.
Thank for your video l have that problema in two .machine.thank
You are most welcome. I hope this video helps
NEVER GOT THE APPEALOR NEED FOR 8 TRACK TAPES. FIRST WAS THE VINYL LP. THEN THE CASSETTE. WHERE DID 8 TRACK FIT INTO THIS? AT LEAST CASSETTES COULD BE PLAYED UNINTERRUPTED FOR ONE COMPLETE SIDE, UNLIKE THE RIDICULOUS CLICKING INTERRUPTION OF AN 8 TRACK TAPE. AND HORRIBLE DESIGN. NO PROTECTIVE STORAGECASE-JUST A BULKY PLASTIC SHELLWITH A PAPERED ON LABEL THAT FADED AND PEELED IN A SHORT TIME. POINTLESS AND RIDICULOUS FORMAT FROM THE GET GO.
Actually, this is incorrect. The screw you are adjusting is actually the head 'Azimuth' screw. The 'cross talk' head height adjustment hex nut is behind this assembly. 99% of the time, the cross talk adjustment is all that is needed to correct/optimize playback. You shouldn't mess with the azimuth.
You've peaked my curiosity. I will have to check this out. I could very well have missed this.
@@8trackfm Go to vinyl engine and download the service manual for the H-R100 (which is the same as yours but has Dolby).
@@frankm3945 I definitely will. Thanks for the info
No I never have. I like the idea. I think my Panasonic R5-856 can record
Hi! Thanks so much for doing both of these videos. I have a 1978 MEGO 2XL robot which has an eight track player inside. My unit is cross talking on some tapes and not others. A 2XL repair expert suggested that I adjust the head height adjustment. The only thing is he wants me to buy his instructional video. It’s nearly 16 bucks. I understand that you have to make money but, wow! Anyway, I am totally blind and hesitant to do this myself. I am not sure what model eight track this is as it is slightly modified on the inside to accommodate the work required to play 2XL programs. I will look around and see if I can find out what model it is. I believe it is similar to the eight track player you would find in your car back in the day.
It would most likely have a lower end setup in it. If you decide to try and tackle this yourself (which i think should be pretty easy) you can send me an email with pictures or video of anything that stumps you and I will happily advise you, but I don't think you should have any trouble. My email is mrboutilier@yahoo.ca
@@8trackfm thank you so much! Lol! I have always wanted to do stuff like this, but I just lack the confidence. If I come across any problems, I will certainly email you. I do have a few questions though. Can this crosstalking be caused by the A-Trak tape itself? I mean, if the tension on the tape is not quite what it should be, can the tracks bleed into each other in that instance? The reason I ask this is because The cross talking occurs on some tapes and not on others. Is it a matter of somehow tightening the innards of the eight track tape? I am a kid of the 80s so this is just a little before my era. Lol!
Sometimes worn pressure pads on the cartridge (located directly under the tape at top of cartridge) can cause cross talk but it’s usually from a misaligned head. The foam pressure pads are the worst for wearing out
@@8trackfm I have heard of this happening. I do know of a UA-camr who has found a low-cost solution to this problem. I don’t remember if it was Databits, or Techmoan, but one of them discovered that you could tailor cut make up sponges and apply them with some sort of adhesive. You just had to apply some scotch tape or some thing on the side of the make up sponge that touches the tape so it won’t rub and produce make up sponge flakes. Lol! I wish I could remember who did that! Anyway, I think there are also eight track repair kits if I’m not mistaken. I don’t know. I think I would try the head alignment to. It wouldn’t cost me anything. Lol!
When I adjust the head, I disassemble the player to make the set screws easier to see and to get to.
Sometimes it is necessary to take your player apart to access the adjustment screw. Some players have easy access from the underside, while others have to be taken apart. And sometimes even if a player has the access hole on the bottom, there is less struggle accessing the head adjustment by taking the player apart. I normally just disassemble. Less aggravation that way
Do you have a video on using the empty cart to re-spool a tape? Haha I dropped a tape while trying to fix it
Not yet. I haven't had to do a respool yet. But I will once the time comes
I didn't quite catch what you said about your source for the new pads. Is it a standard 8-track replacement part, or is this something you're getting from Home Depot or a hobby store?
The pads used here are from weather strip. I don't remember where I bought this but as long as the weather strip isn't too stiff, any brand from any hardware store will work. The softer the material is the better. You can also use quarter inch thick sponge cut into quarter inch width. If you are looking for proper pre made pads, you can try 8trackavenue.com
Helpful as heck. I have been brute forcing my way inside. I am yet to fix any of my non working 8 track tapes. This has got to help!!
Never even knew box sets existed in 8 tracks. Thanks!
