    So I did kind of what you talked about at the end. I used a wool pad and mag and aluminum polish. That made much shorter work of tearing through the 18 years of oxidation. I should have sanded, but this was the experiment: Can I get nearly professional results using a hacky approach, lol! And I'd say it's nearly professional looking. After using the mag and aluminum polish, I cleaned the headlight, including using a panel prep. Then I buffed with a medium pad using the 2-in-1 polish. Wiped. Then I used a polishing pad using the 2-in-1 polish. Night time driving is dramatically improved. The appearance of the lenses would be "perfect" to most eyes. In the end, if someone doesn't have the tools already, my "hack" would be quite expensive. But if you have the tools and pads already, you can get away without the panel prep and it would cost under $20 US. And the 2-in-1 bottle will last for years, so I feel like this could be a legit approach for someone who might be nervous about sanding. You just have to be proactive and re-apply the 2-in-1 several times per year using a microfiber or a polishing pad.

    I bought a 190E 2.6 a couple of years ago. £4k. I didn't haggle as I could see it was worth more than that all day long. It was the car I wanted " first time round" but as I was mortgaged up to the hilt and in " negative equity" ( ask your parents !) I gave up on the idea of owning a car which cost as much as a property. I will miss it when I sell it because I have grown attached to it. I can't think of a better car at that price point. In November last year I entered a " win a car" competition. I never do that but it was a chance to own something out of my league so why not ?. I couldn't justify buying one so I guess I could win one haha. Anyway, I did win the car !. A 1985 R107 380 SL Auto in Pajett Red ( sound familiar?). Guess one Benz is never enough is it Steven !

    • @stevensfourwheels
      @stevensfourwheels Місяць тому

      @@ericwright8498 Hi Eric Thanks for watching and you’ve asked a very interesting question. I would say that I brought a car with a number of issues including bodywork (rust) and mechanicals (due a big service and starting issues). Once I had owned the car for a little while there were a few more issues such as the Mass Air Flow Sensor and Fan Control Unit. However once all these issues were sorted then this year I’ve had a year of trouble free motoring. My cars not heavily used having only completed around 1,200 miles between MOT’s. I would bear in mind the following: - Early examples are getting on for 30 years old so parts of this age do wear out. - You have to factor in regular maintenance such as servicing, tyres, etc. Next year my SLK is due a service and I’ll also be getting a gearbox service done as well. - You can also pick between new and used parts. New parts are fairly well supplied. There are also plenty of SLK’s made so there’s always a constant supply of used parts. A new fan control used was over £200 from a Mercedes main dealer versus less than £50 for a used part as I opted for the used part. A new Bosch Mass Air Flow Sensor was £75 verses £50 used so I opted for a new part. Hope this helps, Steven

    The R170 is easily purchased for a very reasonable price and has been for a long time. There are plenty around, especially if you like silver, and if you follow the private adverts you will notice owners often slashing their own initial asking price after a couple of weeks. I don't think it is any more risky than other modern classics when it comes to repair bills either. Mine is a 1997 example, cost me £1100 two years ago for a running, driving, years mot, very tidy car which had just been serviced. It has cost me very little to run since then. I researched my car and found it retailed at £70,000 in 1997 which seems crazy to me. I have taken it to several low profile classic meet-ups and I have to say it doesn't get a lot of attention from folk. Only one person has really been interested in it and that was because they knew it was a very early car. You get a few more looks with the top down, but no more than any other convertible. It is lovely to drive, and you do feel you are in a proper classic, mainly due to the simple instruments and lack of driver aids. I never knew it sounded so good until I lent it to a young lady and watched her briskly accelerate away - I never knew it sounded like that from the street! After two years as my daily drive I feel I have been there, done that, but will keep it until something better tempts me. I still love it. Until there are very much fewer of them around I do think it will struggle to be looked upon as a true classic car.

    • @stevensfourwheels
      @stevensfourwheels Місяць тому

      @@stuarttaylor6038 Thanks for watching Stuart. I’m glad to hear that you’re enjoying your R170 ownership experience. Yours seems great value for money and I’m glad that it’s been easy and relatively cheap to run. They certainly make for an interesting modern classic that seems to be relatively reliable and offers good value for money. Interesting thoughts about car shows as I feel that you have to be ‘in the know’ to appreciate them. I’ve had many a chat with fellow SLK owners at shows. There are still plenty out there so I agree that they will become a classic once they become a bit rarer.

    I always take my old cars off the road for four/five months, disconnect the batteries and give them each one to two top up charges (which works). Rarely start them up as I've heard that running to temperature causes more damage than good, simply start up and move the car. But I do give them an occasional drive up the street to get the brakes and tyres moving. Some people go further than me but all cars are different (as are mine). Winter conditions cause more damage than lack of use in that time in my experience.

      @@stevensfourwheels Ultimately it's more common to hear advice that you should keep using a car over winter, which in theory is the best thing to do for the car! But I also just cannot be doing with the multiple car tax costs, constant cleaning and the logistics of getting to use the cars on shorter days and hoping the roads will be as salt free and dry as possible! Nice channel, nearly bought an SLK mk1 but ran away from a rusting example and bought a Boxster moneypit!

      @@00kirbyd I completely get why people don’t want to use their cars during the winter for the reasons you’ve mentioned. I’ve always been tempted by a Boxster.

      @@kevinbray9550 interestingly I’ve been doing some research on the paint code, which is 587. Oddly, it seems to have 2 names. “cabernet red" metallic was the name used in North America and “pajett red” metallic was the name used in anywhere other than North America. Not sure of using multiple names for a single paint code was a thing?
