UC Davis Art History | Thoughts from an art history minor
Переглядів 3763 роки тому
Hey everyone! Today I'm back with another UC Davis video, this time about my experience with the art history department! Although I was not an art history major, due to the lack of videos on this topic, I decided to make one for those interested in the program! As always, please feel free to leave a comment or question below and I'll try my best to get back to you! Enjoy!

My Day with the Dean VLOG- UC Davis
Переглядів 3315 років тому
Come along with me as I job shadow Dean Winey, the Dean of the College of Biological Sciences at UC Davis!
Great video ... where did you end-up after school? Did UCD help you find a job?
Thank you ... great video, that I plan to share with my daughter who was admitted . Where did you end up after graduation? Did the school help you land a job?
Thank you!
Avoid Davis if you have a soul
Im Brazilian and im going to UC davis in november as phd student. There is any community for studentes of other countrys? Thank you so much
There is the International House that can hook you up with others from your country
Thank you for this video! My kid just got in and this was really helpful for me.
Do people have their job at Davis or near it after they graduate or do they move to other parts of California since I know that Davis does not have many work offices compared to Irvine or San Diego?
Hi! I think a lot of people leave Davis and move to other parts of California (or other places) when they graduate. Popular spots to move to after are for sure the Bay Area and San Diego though due to many biotech and tech companies in these places :)
Clear, concise and informative. Thank you
Thank you.
I loved Davis! Alum C/O 2014. Still think about my experience there daily. Wasn't a super academic person, but whatever. Also, if you work for Unitrans, your experience will be more amazing!
Students can be bus drivers? That would be amazing job.
How about the weather there?
Very gentle most of the year around. Although super hot in middle of Summer. Have umbrellas and rain jacket for quite a lot of rain, Temps run between 45-65/70 during most of the months. Very cool mornings, and warms up as day goes on. So dress in layers.
If you can barely handle 15 units at a junior college, a Cal State school is way better and references are easy to get if you can make a good impression on your professors.
How is a Biology degree worth it considering the following: 1) A recent study by The Foundation for Research on Equal Opportunity found that a whopping 31% of graduates with a BS in biology have a NEGATIVE Return On Investment. This places Biology as the 3rd Worst major in terms of finances. ONLY Theology and Art majors had a worst ROI... 2) According to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York a whopping 46.9% of Biology graduates currently work in jobs that DONT even require a degree... and according to the same study over 60% of biology graduates have at least a masters degree ( 4th highest of all majors in terms of % holding graduate degrees ) But they still make less then average graduate . 3) Nature magazine published a study highlighting the depression crisis amongst life science graduates/phds. The study found that over 40% of PHDs in the life sciences have mild to moderate depression.. ( at least those that admitted it) 4) Erooms law : more specifically the decline in productivity of scientists and exponential increase in research costs... 5) The reproducibility crisis in science: A whopping >60% of research studies in the life sciences can NOT be repeated...( rhetorical question :but how is it still considered science if no one can repeat it?) 6) Zip recruiter found that 35% of biology graduates with only a BS degree regretted their major. ONLY English majors where more regretful at 40%....
No one in the real world gives a rats ass about your college degree, I can only imagine what kind of debt you have GOOD GOD!
A+ for your hair!
Hi Fiona, I know Davis has good pre-med but I’m wondering for pre-pharmacy ? Do they support pre pharmacy students with good resources ? Thank you for your video
Hey Haema, Davis has their own health professions advising! I never personally went but I heard they were helpful. Here's the link for pre-pharmacy! Hope this helps! hpa.ucdavis.edu/pharmacy
Hi ! I’m having a hard time choosing between Uc Davis, Uc Santa Cruz and Sac State. I honestly don’t know which one to choose. Do you have any advice ?
Congrats on getting into all those schools! I think it would be beneficial to talk to people from each school and hear what they have to say. Ask about things you are interested in for a school and see which one is the best fit for you!
I’m a former Aggie from many years ago but am familiar with all 3 schools and their reps from not only my days but now from my grown daughters and their friends. First it’s a no brainer to choose a UC over a CSU, unless cost is an issue. Second, Santa Cruz is considered a very granola or hippy haven (or whatever they’re called nowadays). There are also no letter grades. So it’s just an odd place to most outsiders. Davis is the clear choice for getting respect when you say where you’re going (example: my first real job interview after college was all the way in LA, and when the boss read my resume, the first thing he said was “Wow, you graduated from UC Davis?!” I immediately got the job. Also in terms of tradition and college town feel, it can’t be beat. Good luck in your decision.
265 poly sci majors. 1/2,the population attends Davis.
How can one apply to the job shadow program? I am considering going to UC Davis (biological sciences major). I am currently a high school senior.
Congratulations on getting into Davis! I did the job shadow program in fall 2018 so it was a while ago, but I remember the program being advertised on the myUCDavis page! That's how I found out about it and applied :)
@@fiona_rose_ Thank you!
How can I apply
Hi. My daughter was accepted, but isn't sure if she should choose Davis or SLO. She would have to live on campus since we live in southern Cali. Can you share the pros and cons of living on campus vs off?
Hi! I think it depends on the person! I loved living on campus (proximity to classes, friends, etc.) but I knew a lot of people who preferred living off campus
I’m planning on going to Davis as well, living on campus is more expensive but closer to classes while living off campus in an apartment is less expensive but transportation is always offered.
I’m dealing with this too!! Davis and SLO
@@briaschalesky6628is slow good i never heard of it
😍
I miss my time in UC Davis. Davis is a small town but it feels like a college town because most people you see in downtown Davis are mainly students. It's nice to sit in a cafe and see mainly students.
👍
Small town but pretty safe.
thank you for this video!!
Hi Fiona! Can you tell me what classes you took your first year if your ember haha! I have to register for classes yet my Aggie adviser appointment is after registration and I’m starting to freak out!
Hey! I do remember haha! I took BIS 2B (intro to biology course), CHE 3A (general chemistry course not offered anymore but equivalent to CHE 2A) and ENL 3 (Intro to Literature) (for my English requirement but you can also take a GE which is a general education course). For freshman year, 2 major courses and one GE is good to start out with while adjusting to the quarter system. :) Here is a link to a sample 4 year plan for bio majors! basc.biology.ucdavis.edu/sites/g/files/dgvnsk3306/files/files/page/biosci_4yr_studyplan.pdf Let me know if you have other questions! Good luck!
Also I would just like to add everyone is different and comes to college with a different background! This is just a sample plan and I didn't follow this fully. My first quarter schedule I shared I would say is pretty normal for most incoming freshmen but by no means does everyone follow this!
Thank you! This was really helpful. I would love to see a day in the life of a bio major video and learn about your study tips. :) I am going to be a high school senior this fall and am planning to major in biology. If you don’t mind me asking, what other colleges were you considering for biology?
Hi Katie! Thank you so much for watching! I actually just graduated haha otherwise I would make a day in the life video. However, I will share some of my favorite study tips: 1) rewatching lectures and retaking notes 2) going over learning objectives (key for science courses imo!!!) 3) attend office hours if you can!!! As far as other universities I was considering, I also considered UCI but ultimately thought Davis was a better fit for me :) good luck with senior year! You got this!
@@fiona_rose_ Thanks so much! Congrats on graduating!
Hi Fiona! I'm an incoming freshman at Davis this year! I'm majoring in Political Science but I'm really interested in biology and was hoping to take some science courses in addition to my traditional poly sci classes. I'm thinking about taking BIS002B and I was wondering if you have taken it or have heard anything about it? Thank you!
Hello Nikki! Yes I have taken BIS 2B (fall 2017)! It's a requirement for bio majors. It wasn't too bad for the most part, it can be hard though especially if it's your first year at college when you are taking it. Good luck!
@@fiona_rose_ thank you so much for responding!
thanks so much this video helped me a lot!
I'm so glad :)
This was really helpful. I’m going to Davis in the Fall, and I’m kinda scared. I’m going in as a music major, which doesn’t seem super popular but I have no idea
how was it?
just remember what kind of "school" you send your kids. you might end up paying just to have your kids indoctrinated rather than educated.
As someone who goes to a public college in California, I constantly have my professors preaching about their political views - and every single one of them is right-wing, anti socialism, anti abortion, and anti gun control! Log off of Facebook and leave your house for once
Thank you : ) Davis may have been unbearable during the fires last year
i got waitlisted hope i get in, is the campus pretty?
I think so!
My daughter was accepted as well. Although she's still deciding where she wants to attend, what I'd like to know is about crime on campus & in the surrounding areas...?
For a more concrete response, I highly suggest looking at the actual numbers, but imo, Davis is pretty safe! But it depends on a lot of things, one being where you come from when comparing Davis on safety levels...
@mother toothfairy My daughter completed her undergrad there & is now in their Vet Med School. She considers it to be safe, but is aware of her surroundings & careful. We’re from Los Angeles so Davis is smaller & friendlier overall. I’m even considering moving up there.
Hi all! My name is Sarah, and I’ll be entering Davis this fall :) DM me on Instagram if you wanna chat! @thesarahday
if you're comfortable sharing, I was wondering what your high school grades and sat scores were like? i'm thinking of applying to davis (im a hs junior) for microbiology and was wondering how my grades compare to someone who got into ucd. thank you so much for making this vid!
Hi Allison! I have thought about making a video like that, however I am hesitant to do so for a few reasons... One main reason being that I don't want prospective students to compare their scores and grades to mine as an indicator of whether they will get in or not. We all come from different backgrounds and admissions can be a weird thing. I knew people from my high school with higher scores and grades than me who didn't get into Davis, and I knew people who I had better stats than who gained admission to schools I didn't. However, I will say (to vaguely answer your question), I was in the top 10% of my class at my high school. Not to say that I will never make a video like that, but I would want to think about how I would talk about it.
i'm going to uc davis in the fall this year! this video was really helpful and i'm really excited to attend!
yay! Congrats Katherine!
Same!
@@angelog9179 awesome! You can add me on insta: @ kath.nuy
how was it? what did you study?
@@angelog9179 did you like it there?
I got waitlisted for Davis, but I hope I get accepted. Also question are these classes major locked sort of like UC Irvine? Since I heard at Irvine a man couldn't take a theater class for fun because his major was computer science.
Hi! As far as I know, general classes aren't always specific to certain majors. However, due to limited space, some classes only allow major students to sign up during what we call first pass (which is when you register for classes). However, there is a second pass when other students may sign up usually (but not always). Another case where someone may not be able to take a class is due to prerequisites. For example, as a bio major, there is often at least one class I need to take before signing up for another one. A broad example of this is that I needed to take and pass general chemistry and some general bio classes before taking some upper division ones. Hopefully this made sense! And I wish you the best of luck!
Out of curiosity, What other UC schools did you get accepted to in the end?
If you have more questions about UC Davis, you can message me on instagram @fiona_rose_ !
hey dear, can you give me any mail address plz... i need to know some information. 🙂 thank you
Hi I need information my kid for waitlisted how is college does kids go to Berkeley for taking classes
I got accepted into Uc Davis ! Thank you this was so helpful. I am looking into becoming an elementary school teacher and my major is English, so I don’t know if it’s supper popular at Uc Davis . :/
Hi Aurora! First of all, congrats for getting in! Second of all, I don't think the major is as small as you might think! It may not be as popular as something like bio sci or psychology at Davis, but I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing! :)
Hey!! I’m currently a freshman at UC Davis who’s majoring in English! If you have any questions feel free to dm me on insta :)) (elizabethwoodhall)
Hey! I’m Sarah, I’ll be entering this fall! I plan to major in psychology w/ a minor in English/creative writing :) If you wanna chat, I’m on Instagram @thesarahday
I, too, went to UC Davis to become an elementary school teacher and my major was English. I soon got frustrated with how subjective the grading in my English classes was. I switched to Child Development which morphed into Human Development. Best decision that I ever made! My best UC Davis experience was working at the campus Pre-School which was part of one of my Human Development classes.
@@fiona_rose_ Hey is civil engineering a popular major in uc davis?
Got accepted hope I meet new friends quick
yay! congrats Omar!
Hey, you just made one :)
Hey! Im Sarah, I’ll be there! If you wanna chat, DM me on insta! @thesarahday
How easy is it to change majors? My major is biological sciences and I think physio sounds like more my thing .
Hi Isabella! From my experience, it is pretty easy to change majors within the college of bio sci (cbs) at Davis since a lot of the major courses you take the first two years are the same! I changed my major twice within the cbs and it was not a problem at all!
I really do want to attend because I want to be a veterinarian. But do they major in veterinarian technicians?
Hi! The program at Davis for vet med is ranked as one of the best in the world. www.vetmed.ucdavis.edu
@@fiona_rose_ ok perfect thank you!
@@d.dickerson3056 Davis doesn’t have a veterinary medicine major, but choosing a major that fulfills the prevet requirements for their vet school will work. Most stem/bio majors fulfill most of these requirements, and the big thing u should focus on is finding hands on opportunities with animals through internships and volunteering with the animals at davis
@@rexeroni459 IS veterinarian medicine the same things as being a technician
@@d.dickerson3056 No it’s not. You wouldn’t be considered a DVM.
What we should know is how fortunate some of us are to afford a college education and how unfortunate it is for others not able to afford a college education.
I’m getting paid 2k every quarter to go to UC Davis…
@@briaschalesky6628 hello Bria, can I ask how your doing that? My son is graduating from high school this year and has already been accepted to UC Davis and other schools as well but I'm sure he will be picking UC Davis. This would be a blessing, thanks in advance 🙏
@@normadelia5252 I got a $30,000 regents scholarship. (It comes with priority registration and library privileges) It’s that and I have a Pell grant because of financial aid. I’d have him look through his FASFA and budget it out! That was a merit scholarship so you don’t apply to it, they award it based on your application. But I’d have him apply to as many other scholarships as he can!!
@@normadelia5252 Also, congrats to your son! I’ll be attending as a freshman in the fall as well
Is it difficult to be a pre med at Davis? Do u how many students by average actually go to med school ? Thanks
Hey! Lots of students at Davis start out as pre-med and then decide to change career paths. I couldn't give you exact numbers but from my experience, a lot of students at Davis studying bio are pre-med at some point in their college career. I would say yes, it's difficult, but I imagine being pre-med would be challenging at any school.
This was really helpful thank you !!!!!!
Hello Fiona! Do you know if there is a difference between the Biological Sciences major, Microbiology major, and NPB major in terms of aligning with medical schools' prerequisites the best? I am currently a freshman at UC Davis majoring in Biological Sciences, and I am thinking of switching to one of the 2 majors listed depending on which one fulfills the most prerequisites/which one would be the most helpful in prepping for medical school?
Hey Austin! From what I've noticed at Davis, a lot of pre-med students major in NPB. However, there are also plenty of pre-med students who major in bio sci or microbio. To get a better look at the course requirements for each major, I would check out the UC Davis College of Bio Sci website. Another resource you may find helpful is the hpa website. They have charts that list common pre requisites for different med schools and programs! hpa.ucdavis.edu Good luck on your journey! You got this!
@@fiona_rose_ Thank you so much Fiona!
Awesome college university
Hey Fiona quick question. what do you plan to do with your major? If it’s med school would you recommend changing majors since it’s really competitive to get A’s in the Science classes like O-Chem. Thanks in advance. I’m considering transferring as a bio major, but having second thoughts lol
Hey Kevin! I plan to pursue a master's degree in biology (leaning towards microbio) and then hopefully work for a pharmaceutical or biotech company to work on products to help people! I personally never wanted to go to med school, although I considered optometry which has similar pre-requisites to med school. Lots of pre-med students major in bio because it generally aligns very close to the pre-reqs list. So regardless of your major, if you wish to attend med school, you have to take certain classes like o-chem (my personal nightmare haha), physics, calculus, etc. so I would say choose a major you like but no matter what, you will encounter some hard classes you will have to push through at some point. Hope this was helpful and good luck with your studies!
