Colorado Pride!!!! And I'm straight lol. Seriously though, make sure you do your research on which PART of Colorado to move to. As someone born and raised here, there's a lot of pockets of bat shit crazy right wing extremism (coming from someone who was raised in one). A lot of the more rural areas are pure Trump. Colorado Springs has focus on the family as well as hundreds of other christian hubs and was known as the 'Christian Mecca' for religious extremists in the 90s/2000s. Don't get me started on Lauren Boebert. Denver's pretty universally safe. Places like Boulder and Aspen I'm pretty sure are progressive havens too. The state itself is AMAZING and I'd recommend it to most anyone. Just make sure to know what you're getting into, as there's a very 'the rest of the state vs Denver' vibe that you'll hit if you live anywhere outside Denver or Aurora.

As a kansan i gotta agree with the "small areas are more progressive than bigger cities like Wichita". I live in a town with only a little over a 1,000 people near the Missouri state line and I'm shocked to see how many "Kansans for Harris" signs I've seen in my town, or how many people I knew that voted no for the Value Them Both Amendment. It honestly shows how there seems to be a big divide in the people and the state government for a lot of these midwest states (and also just the older generations, a lot of these midwest states have a higher older population than younger). It sucks how much anti-lgbt laws have been passed in my state, but with how younger generations of kansans seem to be a lot more progressive (and openly queer like themself), I have just a smidge of hope that my home state won't be a hellhole for someone like me :/

As a born and bred St. Louisan, I'm not surprised my home state ended up this high. I love my city and am (to a degree) glad I was born here because otherwise I wouldn't have given it a second thought, but I can't say I would've chosen to live here.

I love your work. I've been considering moving out of Texas depending on the outcome of the election. And your videos on the best and worst states have been helpful. But I might move anyway regardless of who wins because I'm just so done turning on the news every other day and hearing about what Governor Abbott has done this time to make my state harder for me to live in. And he basically has no term limit so he can just be governor until he passes or if someone else wants to run against him. Texas is screwed.

Well, Indianapolis and northern suburbs are fine. Quite LGBTQ friendly. But the rest of the state...the rural parts...are absolutely awful. Just like in the early 20th century with the KKK...ugh. As they say, there is no hate like Christian love.

There really should be asylum programs in states like California, Massachusetts' Maine, Vermont etc. to help Queer people in states like these get out safely. Including taking and helping queer kids get amacipated, get them housing, job training etc. from their abusive cultist biological parents. I'm just so F*cking sick of hearing these horror stories of Queer kids dieing because of the abuse they face in their backwards towns and homes. 😡🤬😡 It's also why I want to have a farm for when my husband and I retire. Cause then we can at least have a place for anyone in our community that needs to escape their current living situation to have a safe place to stay till they can get on their feet. That and working with animals and in nature can help with healing from the abuse they are escaping. The only hard part of this plan is tring to find an affordable farm in one of those states. 😅 Anyone with ideas or tips would be appreciated. I'm currently researching UDSA loans but not sure if that's the best way to go.

I'm an aro-ace non-binary person who was born in Nebraska. Grew up in Omaha til I was 9 and sometimes go out to visit my stepdad or old elementary school teachers and classmates. Sucks I'm unable to alter the gender marker on my birth certificate from male to non-binary. Also, I have zero plans on undergoing hormone replacement or something as drastic as reassignment surgery.

Thanks for the source info. Ive been trying quantify different issues in the multi front battle for human rights in the US and having new data sources helps me to figure out what needs to be supported where. Mostly Im trying to break it up by courts of appeal so we can push back on the worst offenders and hopefully get some recourse and president via the courts if people try to stamp out peoples rights.

Indiana native: you are 100% correct but... B-town did have some problems with "too much acceptance" by letting literal Nazis in the Farmer's Market (plus their armed guards) and the local govt proceeded to PROTECT THEM while other counties kicked them out. That was 'fun'. Thankfully, I went to high school before all these law changes. Teachers would actually protect my orientation because they thought it was "just a phase" but I may have traumatized one teacher/pastor by kissing my SO at the time. I was kinda in the sticks too, so its surprising that my parents never got "the call" (though, I did have "close call"), cause I sure as hell wasn't gonna tell them.

It's so interesting as an Australian to see how divided US states are on LGBT rights. All the Australian states and territories have pretty much the same levels of LGBT Rights, (a few still need to ban conversion therapy though). I'm lucky to live in the ACT (Australian Capital Territory) which has scored 100/100 Legal Rights on Equaldex and 74/100 for Public Opinion.

I am a 24 year old trans woman who has only realized their sexuality about 10 months ago and their gender identity less than 3 months ago. I truly did not know how horrible my home state of Missouri was as I have been politically adverse for a majority of my life as well as it not being on my radar because "it didn't affect me". Well it does. I feel so guilty and shameful for how I use to think, it's almost feels like I was asking for this to happen to me (not to suggest I wasn't always queer, I just didn't know due to internalized homophobia and transphobia). I feel so scared and alone. I live in St. Charles and thought I was doing my part by joining my local college LGBTQ+ group and becoming the vice president (the club had no officers and needed people to help organize it). I was naive. We are barely surviving out here. I need to reevaluate my entire life plan. I don't feel safe anymore.

N. Dakota, S. Dakota, Nebraska and Kansas are not Midwest States. their great plains states.

It is interesting that the 6 worst midwestern states for our community are also the least educated, lowest gdp, and lowest life expectancies out of the 12 in the region. The best states in the Midwest for our community excel in every major metric every beyond civil rights.

The problem isn't necessarily the states themselves. If you want to know what keeps driving this, have a look into ALEC. This one advocacy group is largely responsible for the horrendous legislative setbacks plaguing the entire country, and not merely in the Midwest. Whenever you run across these backward-thinking places, ALWAYS check to see if ALEC or its fellow travelers have a major foothold in the capitals. Invariably, you WILL find that their grubby fingerprints are all over them. Get rid of ALEC and the other fascist mouthpieces and a lot of these states will eventually get straightened out (no pun intended). As for Missouri, I think you're selling the state a little short. Fact is that there IS a "blue wave" starting to move outward from the major cities and into the more rural areas, but like much of the country, it'll probably be decades before MAGA's toxins work their way out of the system. Springfield, for example, is actively trying to become more open and fair to LGBTQ. It's not an easy fight...but it's being fought because it's simply the right thing to do, and the city gets it. Besides, if one happens to LIKE being a sociopolitical Luddite, Harrison, Arkansas is only about 90 minutes away for ALL of one's bigotry needs! Also, I've always found that it's the part of the state that's north of the river where the real backwardism hangs out. Too much like Kansas, I suppose...

Illinois has been pushing really hard with the pro trans rights bills in recent years. We added to the Illinois human rights act that you can't stop someone from using the bathroom that matches the gender they identify as. We have some fringe anti LGBT bills here and there but they never actually get anywhere. Pros of being one of the big three democrat stronghold states. I should also mention I'm not a member of the lgbt but I'm a very big ally.

Missouri really hurts. As someone who loves theme parks, Silver Dollar City is somewhere I want to visit one day. But at the same time, I don’t want to give the state any of my money due to its wicked laws
