    Using a wood-burning camp stove is about efficiency and versatility. It contains and focuses the heat for cooking, making it way more efficient; it's much easier to start a fire in, burns wood more completely (less smoke and ash), and it only uses a fraction of the wood that traditional campfires use, just to name a few.

      I hear you, but you can achieve all of those things with an open fire. It depends on your skill level. You can make an open fire as large or small as you want; in my experience, starting a fire is the same in both cases. Thanks for watching.

    People have been making twig burning, "Hobo Stoves" out of juice tins for as long as I can recall. They're free and easy to replace and will do as good a job as will an expensive twig burning stove constructed for the purpose. Again, save your money and build one out of a juice tin. Cheers

    I use a homemade utensil strainer stove (smaller than the Ikea strainer). It's very fuel efficient, I can grill steak on it, it leaves no ash and doesn't scar the ground and fuel is unlimited. Plus, It's a fun warming morale booster. Ticks all boxes over a canister stove imho. Great vid, Cheers.

    For the weight and bulk of a camping stove you could probably carry 50 protein or granola bars. If you may need a stove for heat, that's a different story.

    When you're backpacking and 24 hours away from the nearest hospital or convenience store and it's raining and windy with gale force, the only way you're going to have a fire is with a wood stove under a tarp as a wind break. And it happens more than you realize. Sure, under ideal conditions, you don't need a wood stove. Even in the backyard - it's fun to use.

    There can be times when an open fire on the ground is illegal, but still okay if it's in a container. Also, if the ground is very dry, it could be dangerous to start a fire there. Most of these portable stoves can be placed on a flat rock and used.

    I've carried a "pill bottle" alcohol stove in my daily EDC for 2+ 😢 years (even accidently flew with it). I've Had to use it twice when caught on a high pass in winter for 20 hours and once at a friend's house during a power outage. Love it. However, like you, I did replace the container with a sturdier one that sealed tightly. As to the price mine was gifted to me, but yes it is a bit too high.

    A twig stove has several advantages over an open fire, Safety: Twig stoves are safer than open fires because they contain the flames and direct them towards your pot. They also keep sparks from flying in random directions. Efficiency: Twig stoves are more efficient than open fires because they can control the airflow into the fire chamber. Ease of use: Twig stoves are easier to use than open fires, less wood is needed. Cooking: Twig stoves allow you to control the heat and temperature to cook your food evenly. Any other questions?

    I use a WW2 canteen. one of those you are showing. It can be used with wood or my trangia alcohol stove. Also, as a base on open fire. It is one of the best designs. Lightweight taking no space at all. Within 5' you can have a small fire to use for preparing coffee or a quick meal. I prefer trangia though

    My favorite twig stove is a 12 oz can of chili. After I eat the chili, I poke holes in the side low and near the top. (Knife or a pointy tent stake) It becomes my twig stove for heating coffee water. I never mind carrying a twig stove that also contains a meal. 🤔 Then that can can hold some gathered tinder or some item in a zip lock so the item doesn't get all suet covered. I dont pack much when I camp. And i find that out in the woods an empty sardine can or bean can can be quite handy. It isn't " trash" ...it is a potential storage device or stove. ...an empty 16 oz water bottle becomes a minnow trap. It is a mindset thang. Trash is only trash when a guy isn't smart enough to see its potential.

    Coffee! Instant rice, dehydrated refried beans... I use my twig stoves all the time in my backyard, on the trail and camping. I am not extremely domesticated. I live in an arid and windy region. Not many trees. These things are great for windy areas. I am a coffee junky. A twig stove is perfect for getting a cup of water ready for coffee or tea or just to get some dehydrated refried beans made. Every design has some pros and cons. I love a simple 12 oz vegetable can with holes drilled low and high at the lip. A guy can pack a can of chili and then rinse the can, knock some holes in it with a tent stake and use it as a twig stove for heating a cup of water. I hate cooking over a big campfire. Smokey, messy and takes way too much wood, just a pain. If I do make a regular campfire, my campfire is rarely bigger than 8" across and probably Dakota fire-pit like in design. Big campfires are for big groups of folks. I am not a fan of that type camping. I love camping alone and twig stoves are fantastic for that.

    • @PeteOutdoors1
      @PeteOutdoors1 16 днів тому

      Coffee makes everything good 😀 All good points. Although a camp fire does not have to be big, it can be just as small as a stove fire. I guess I am a minimalist. Thanks for watching.

    Open fire produces a lot more smoke. Open fire has much more opportunity to cause wildfire - which if you've ever even just seen a place destroyed by wildfire, you night realize how much safer a little wood stove is than an open fire. People don't properly extinguish open fires. People burn garbage in open fires. Yeah, it make take a little longer to do what you want with a wood stove, but it's much safer.

  • @evelynmacmillan2485

    Whaaaaat? The more I use them the more I realize how much better they are than an open fire. I have a gasifier just like that one. It uses like 5-10 times leas fuel than an open fire, doesnt get thr smoke on my face, doesnt need nearly as much maintenance, its clearer and doesnt scorch the ground. I have one in the car with a bag of wood pellets for emergencies, in case the car breaks down in the middle of the snow. Which other fuel is reliable to store and use in very cold temperatures? The fire you made there... There is no way it would go on with raging flames like that if it was an open fire. It is the chimney effect that makes it burn like that. Sorry, these are just great.

    • @PeteOutdoors1

      Hi Pete, nice name 😀I can see your point, but when all is said and done, for me at least, it is one less piece of gear I have to carry. Keeping it in the car for emergencies is a good use case, but again, an open fire is always an option in the outdoors. One can make a case for indoor use for these kinds of stoves. First, nesting a bottle defeats the purpose of the handle locking the lid on the pot. Personally I've never seen anyone nest a bottle in those, even one that fits in the old pot. I've see more cases where they store an Isobutane can and microstove inside and nest a walmart or GSI cup on the outside. The old pot is perfect as a cook system, this is one of those examples of fixing something that wasn't broken, all for 2 more oz's of water.....whoopee

    • @PeteOutdoors1
      @PeteOutdoors1 29 днів тому

      Yeah. As I said, there is no reason to upgrade if you don't care about nesting. Nesting is for compact storage; in some cases that may be required. Thanks for watching.

      You can squeeze the handle and remove it and turn it upside down so that it folds down to the side instead of across the top, it will still click into position, though just slightly at a downward angle, thats not really a big deal, and makes nesting taller bottles no ,longer an issue and the SS cups and the Coghlans camp cup will still fit on the bottom of the cook pots.

    If your plastic window is vertical or even slightly sloped inwards, youll find that the sparks will often times bounce right off rather than burn holes.

      This window is sloped about 60° inward. I am not sure it would help. Plastic just can't take the heat. Thanks for watching.

    Curiois. That window film is designed to shrink and pull tight, was it affected by the heat of the fire and if so did it pull the shelter ends in?

      That is the reason I chose it, because it is slightly heat resistant. See my video on testing this shelter. The embers were just too hot for it. Yes, it did shrink around the burn holes, but not enough to pull the shelter ends in. Thanks for watching.

    The fact you made this hike with that weather pending.. This is just foolish. The signs were plainly there.

    I have to disagree with virtually everything you've said. You get what you pay for, and there are GREAT survival kits out there. I have to assume you're buying your gear from Walmart or some other Godforsaken dollar store and have never been in a situation where you had to rely on one of these kits...

    • @PeteOutdoors1
      @PeteOutdoors1 Місяць тому

      Gear is not the question, it is knowledge of what is required to survive that is the focus of this video. You need water and sleep to survive. Once you accept that, you must acquire whatever gear is necessary to support these functions, from the retailer of your choice. As I said in the video, these commercial survival kits contain SOME of the essentials required, but they do not address hydration and sleep. Thanks for watching.
