    As an engineer, who designed intricate machine parts, the way "bushing" is used and "washer" makes my brain hurt. They technically aren't washers, they are bronze "washer" bearings. Made specifically to be a bearing surface. Washers are completely different, used to create surface area and friction. They look like washers, so that's why people call them that.

    • @alecgross12
      @alecgross12 7 днів тому

      @@kene3431 interesting, I didn’t know that! But you’re right, whenever you use washers when building things, they’re used to generate more friction, not to be used as a pivot point

      @@alecgross12 Semantics aside, I think it all comes down to fit and finish no matter what system the designer goes with. I think people get too caught up with materials, types pivot systems and lock systems in the knife community. Like the guy who invented Magnacut said, "bevel angle is more important than the type of steel" I think Buck's 440c is better than some manufacture's s30v. Because of heat treat alone. Good video, I learned a bit about how the balisong-flipper community uses certain words. I am just a casual flipper, I carried a Benchmade 51 because it was just a great EDC, didn't have to worry about it opening in my pocket, long capable blade and light weight. I loved it, but flippers hate it. I recently bought the Necron Gold class, I love it, though it gets hate for not having bushings. To me, it's just an elegant looking knife that I like to carry. It gives me joy.

    I'm not an engineer but my .02c on your question to the ringing is not the easiest to come up with bc several things you made ideas on it are really right about it.. After dealing with a few balis and have really listened to what a few bali engineers including Lucas Cao of Squid Industries and other engineers of blade show meets have found over the years is the grade of Titanium and some and I say as my opinion of some aluminum balis wind chime or ring nice but titanum is the preferred for most engineers with high grades of 5 or higher is a start for handles and then all the other things you mentioned work more or less to bring the chime clack or wind chime ring tone together... Channeled cut openings, grooves, window cutouts lighten the handles which also plays the role in this also the blade material grade aswell bc sound transfers through it more or less depending on the material then all the other stuff washers hardware just adds to it but my few things on it ... Hope it helps you out ... Thanks for your helpful video on the bushings it's really good👊👊

    Nice explanation. You got everything right, and I like how you covered the super basic stuff like what the outer diameter means. A lot of technical people struggle to connect that stuff because they forget its not common knowledge. Satisfying sound is determined by how well handles and blade transmit sound between each other. Most important tolerance for that is the diameter of the hole in the blade to the OD of the bushing, and then next is the tune on the bushing. Zen pin material & fit is also very important , but that's mostly on the makers and usually not an issue.

  • @ljfeflips
    @ljfeflips 6 місяців тому

    Interesting point about the oil in a floating washer system. I think the main advantage of a floating washer system is that you can sand down the washers if you accidentally undersize the bushing. So you can’t mess up when you’re tuning a bushing. However, I’ve had real problems tuning floating washer systems. I always get one handle that ends up stuttering. I think it’s because the shitty clone washers have a burr on one side (or bent washers). Because, with a floating washer system, you have friction on both sides of the washer.

    • @alecgross12
      @alecgross12 6 місяців тому

      Yeah that’s another possible advantage… but you could start to run into an issue where the bushing isn’t the same size as the zen pins, in which case the handles won’t be parallel and they’ll push against the washers. That might be what’s happening with your “stuttering”

    • @ljfeflips
      @ljfeflips 6 місяців тому

      @@alecgross12 right! The only Balis I have owned with floating washers were pinsless though (TheOne G10 Orca and TheOne Nami). However, I was still worried that I went too small with the bushings. The handle flanges may not have been parallel enough when the screws were tightened. Idk though, TheOne G10 Orca was stuttery out of the box! So I think it was shitty washers. Plus, a G10 handle moving against a bronze washer seems like a terrible design. So I sold that one. Moral of the story is that floating washers are a bitch to tune lol. I tried reaching out to a few professional modders about tuning my TheOne Nami. They said they can’t guarantee a great tune even if I give them extra hardware. So I’ve been trying to live with a bali that has a small amount of tap :(
