are you still using the kef r3? or have you moved on to other monitors? im seriously considering getting one
Hi! I don't use them now, I spent around a year designing my own custom monitors and building those, and they are now my mains. The KEF R3 are still as good as they were though, but they are currently on secondary duty. As usual I think it's worth having a listen somewhere if at all possible, though it can be hard to find somewhere. I believe they were updated to the R3 Meta, which I haven't heard, and that likely means R3s are much less expensive now.
great editing!
Many thanks!
hi there! thanks for the review. could you, please, tell, if it's possible to control older synths connected to electra one using modern midi sequencers? I mean, Oxi One into Electra, into a synth that speaks SysEx. Oxi One, obviously, can't send SysEx; and making Electra "translate" CC to SysEx would be just another layer of pain. It would be far easier to assign already made preset's values to specific CCs to control them externally. sorry for such a long explanation, I hope you understand 🙏
Wait, so multiplayer is coming to Dome Keeper?
Yes it's on the roadmap, though as far as I was able to find out the timeline isn't definitive yet.
I’m so fed up with camera gear at this point. So often there is something wrong that you only find out about after buying. It’s a hobby for me so I buy a lot of things second hand so I can’t even return them. Sheeeesh
@@apoptose1558 I can’t remember the last time something just 100% worked. There’s always some bug, issue or thing you have to workaround. It is pretty tiring tbh
Dang it, I’m in…just gotta get one more guitar first!
😂 hahah i cannot claim that in the last four years i have not succumbed to the GAS, but rewatching this does help me...
Tired from bullshit mechanics... One of them - "deckbuilding". Just when devs stop stamping this shit like hotcakes?
Does changing the values of continuous parameters feel laggy? It looks a bit
For my own patch it depended on the code, at first I had made an error where it was sending a value every time a value changed so if you scrolled it backed up tons of values and eventually lagged. When I changed it to just send when you stop touching the pot, it became fast. In general use I don’t find it laggy tbh
So I’m looking at iPad apps like the Tal unolx plugin, there’s a horrifically-priced dedicated midi controller for it, the SFC 60; lots of nice sliders facilitating a quick change of parameters, but again priced ridiculously for its function. This unbelievably is in the same price range but seems to deliver less immediate functionality in terms of a swiftness in changing params, would you agree?
I've not heard of that before, it seems like quite a different thing, a single-use bespoke controller just for recreating the feel of one hardware synth synth, so I guess it's very expensive because they'll sell only very few units and it's well made. You'll be able to make an Electra One patch for the iPad synth I'm sure, with the bonus being the E1 can control everything else if you have the patience to programme it. Though it's a different experience to having exactly the same controls as the original hardware, I guess you have to pick a priority. I'd be quite nervous about buying a hardware controller designed for just one piece of iPadOS software personally, as many apps I used to use on iPad and iPhone just don't work any more and have been abandoned by the developer due to Apple's ecosystem putting a lot of pressure on developers to maintain software, recompile and rewrite and so on.
great interview. thanks for sharing! love the art style.
Super interesting, here’s to indie games staying pure ! I love playing them and I’ll def check out Enigmas catalogue
Is Kolari Vision the only company doing after market mods for OLPF? Yeah, it's $700 but look at how much more a S1H costs than a S5iix.
This was a fascinating interview.
goat.
Wow, that sound like a master Programmer for all the midi machines. ❤🔥 deep diving Controller 🙌
Yeah it's super deep, and has the ability to do pretty much anything as long as you commit to it 💪
Sorry for a noob question - isn't it possible to use some kind of on lens filter of sort to achieve the effect of having OLPF mounted on the sensor?
Nice
It was so surreal being there while this was being recorded. They did an amazing job with the event. Great interview!
Watching this makes me wonder if it can control programs like Premiere or other video editors..
Yeah I use resolve and did wonder if I could bind the knobs to colour controls just for fun really, TBH it's be quite good just for the basics, like temp, tint and so on
Been hesitating about getting the Nektar CS-12 controller.. I didn't like the P1, so I am still looking around hoping to find something better, I need to control Logic pro and my various VSTs and HW synths..
I looked up the CS12, that’s purpose designed for Logic isn’t it? The experience for Logic looks great in theory, though I can’t speak for it as I haven’t tried it. Brand loyalty is hard to make and easy to break though, if you didn’t like another product of there’s it’s no surprise you’re sceptical. Regarding the E1 it’d need a custom script to do anything in depth, I’d have a hunt around the forum or join and see what people have tried 👍
Glad to see a member of the Boneloaf team talking about the game and how optimized the 20 players look in the background LOL
need to show more gameplay. looks cool
I agree. There is a point where absolute sharpness is not artistic and becomes a bit distracting. It's like watching the news in 4k. Yeah, it looks good, but I don't need to see the makeup lines in a 50+ year old newscaster. I just don't need that much detail and my photos don't either. I want them sharp in terms of focus, but not razor sharp because I have the absolutely sharpest lens available. I want good colors, rich contrast, and as much microcontrast as I can afford to achieve on my budget. Sharpness...meh. Especially for portraits. Focused sharply on whatever lens I'm using is fine. I guess that's why I am so fond of the older Nikon D lenses. They're good enough and render nicely. Yes, there's far better, but the cost for it is not worth the output improvements for me.
1:35 to keep the attention span of gen alpha and gen z you have to speak really loud and fast, pull over exaggerated faces, lots of jump cuts every three seconds and unfocused zoom in and outs, loud music in the background, unnecessary cartoon and sound fx going in the background, a wisecracking animated sidekick asking questions like a four year old or even get Brian to do that. I prefer the nice calming normal way you present this 👍🏾
OK next idea: I stand in a field of Lions with a long-range shotgun on a hand-controlled winch system attached to my back. The winch is loose and wobbly and also there is a lamb shank next to the mic. In the left speaker is a Billy Eilish track (slowed + reverb) and in the right speaker is Cotton Eye Joe at 2x speed. Also in post I will add one box with Fortnite gameplay and another with an AI generated video of Richard Dawkins in an MMA fight with God. Brian can be on my back too.
That would actually be hilarious as a one off, you might attract the wrong crowd though, the drill rap producers that sit in a dimly lit neon lit studio with sunglasses on bragging about the latest plug in that does it all for them, they just tweak the eq and filters, then if you dare ask a question that doesn’t concern reverb on a TR808 or a sample, you get ridiculed in the comments “WTF is a dulcimer man? Is dat like a guitar or summat?”

I ended up selling it on for the Blackmagic equivalent, I can record Blackmagic RAW with that which is good as a resolve user. But still, it's just a better device for me. I just use it without thinking TO BE HONEST, while the Ninja just gave me endless frustrations.
looks awesome. Curious if you guys have ever experimented with zero-G racing, so something like this, but tracks can go in any direction. Similar to drone racing?
Another one you can check out is Aero GPX. More racing than time trial, kind of an F Zero vibe ua-cam.com/video/cxviQzZUcUo/v-deo.htmlsi=pOkZIeGK5z3tUVKd
the hoops part is close to what I was thinking. Full 3D racing with the precision of Trackmania, not floaty like Wipeout. Guess I'll just have to make it myself.
Reminds me a little bit of journey or flower, if they can capture the same feeling those games create, it could be great
@@jaffaman99 it’s got some of that relaxing vibe for sure, while being a different thing of its own
Not sure why UA-cam recommended me this, but I am interested to see how this game will be. Little Big Planet had some gameplay shown of their beta, will something similar be done for the first "level" if there are levels?
I've played about 25% of it now, rather than levels it's one big Island, and the fog drops at certain stages of collection, revealing more island. It's quite relaxed and mostly I'm playing on Steamdeck. There's a couple of playthroughs online already too
This reminds me a little bit of Star Wars Pod Racer (really old game)
I remember that! That's going back some time 😂
this Joon guy sounds like a piece of work
Looks like a cool game, really chilled atmosphere. Will give it a shot! The world needs more futuristic racers
Yeah it's a vibe for sure, and time trials are addictive too
Good that windows can handle 20 controllers, feels like the sort of thing it would lose its mind over.
Apparently quite the technical challenge yeah! I've had problems with it handling one in the past...
Honestly looks really fun, will download for sure
Yeah it really keeps you grinding away in your hotel room 🤣
Who are you and how do you know so much about me?😂😂😂😂😂
hahahah well this video is really a lecture to myself, we all suffer the same horror 😂
someone knows how it compares with the Studioligic MixFace?
I've not used it, but the MixFace looks as though it's a more standard controller aimed at controlling the mixer in the DAW among other things. Really the Electra One's main use case is very in depth customisable control for hardware and software, especially vintage gear with SysEx and other complex MIDI control
Three wheels? Casio? Little square display? I think I spotted the mighty VZ1 in the wild! 😀
Haha yes! I’d like to make a patch for it, i think it will take some time… 😅
Yeah, I can imagine. 😀
@@murdockscott I've not even started yet... I have found some ways to reverse engineer a lot of it, it's just finding a slot of time to do it, but it would make the VZ1 quite powerful in a modern context
I sold mine to a bandmate long ago because she needed a more serious controller keyboard for gigging (I think she was using a Poly-800 with broken keys). I did it for the good of the band, but I have regretted letting it go ever since. I still have a VZ8m… but it’s not the same.
@@murdockscott it's a really solid keyboard isn't it? I use it as a master one. I used to have a VZ10M too crazily enough. What was the change in the 8, I forgot? Was it fewer envelopes, or was it half the synth engine?
Do itlike pentax , use the ibis to simulate a filter if necessary by microvibrations ,works like a charm when needed and still has max sharpness if its no problem
That sounds interesting, I've not heard of that, I shall have to look into it, thanks!
Its for kf , k1 and k3 cameras. AA Filter Simulator For Reducing False Colors and Moiré Thanks To Shake Reduction Mechanism Thanks to the built-in SR system, by using the microscopic vibration of the image sensor unit during image exposure, generates the same level of moiré-reduction effect as optical AA (anti-aliasing) filter. Unlike fixed optical AA filters which always creates the identical result, this innovative simulator allows the user to adjust the level of the moiré-reduction effect from OFF, Type1 and Type2. Bracketing of all those settings is also possible. Depending on your subject, you can chose high resolution shooting or AA filtered shooting
@@loboptlu That sounds excellent, I wonder if they patented it though, hence it not appearing in other cameras?
I think people are simply forgetting about pentax and most are too proud to take a simple but intelligent system. I for example have also sony and canon but no one has an integrated gps controlled ibis or sr for shake reduction by pentax that can do startracking with moving the sensor to follow the stars up to 5 min.
Even the 800€ KF can do it with an optional 200€ gps module and the k1 and k3 mk 2 have it integrated
A dream for Alesis micron, for example, with its nrmp... or dx series, in especial dx200, with its sysex... booth I have 😂😂😂 No luck with that implememtation about midi learning?

The story @ 10:48 is epic 😂
Amazing
Very worthy of investigating. Already have WIDI connectors. What Conductive labs MRCC model do you recommend? Because the 880 4x4 is more ideal for my budget. Seems that' a MRCC is key to pair this with to duplicate your setup. Secondly, is the text on the Electra tiny? Like Korg Volca Tiny... I have some vision issues. Thanks for this awesome rundown.
The smaller MRCC is pretty similar the larger, it lacks the USB MIDI and has fewer sockets so depends on your needs. It also doesn’t have the display and functions therein. You could plug an E1 into the PC socket if you liked. I would definitely look through the manuals and compare that directly with your intended use. Text wise it isn’t big, I’d say a few mm? I can measure when I’m next with it 👍
Oh wow thanks so much for the rundown. Maybe the bigger one is better with more features.
@@Ambientnauts I think it's just worth reading through the mauals to see if you can get away with the smaller cheaper one or not, but without reading manuals sometimes you end up just making an assumption and being disappointed. The maker also has a series of videos teaching you how to use each model on his channel. ua-cam.com/video/z2Hf947JgDk/v-deo.html Though the smaller model isn't here, you can get a comparison by having a look at videos and manuals together, before spending.
Got mine a few days ago, and I'm really struggling with it. The biggest downer is that all my vintage midi gear, connected by MIDI to my PC using a MIDIface 16x16, RME UFX II and Expert sleepers ESX-8MD cannot be two-way accessed through those interfaces. I have to use the two MIDI ports on the Electra one itself, which massively limits what can be controlled without major faffing and a lot of new MIDI mergers, through boxes and double cabling. Even those that I connected to the two ports, I cannot get the E1 to 'see' them. It says nothing connected. The online manual is confusing, and seems to be missing the info I need. I'll try asking on the forum, but so far I'm not having a good experience with the device.
The first paragraph sounds like an issue with MIIDI getting through the Three different devices... is data being filtered out somewhere? When it comes to the E1 not "seeing" devices, do you mean not working with patch dump?
To route E1 through to MIDI devices on the interfaces mentioned, in Bitwig, I just select the device track. But that is one way from E1 to MiDI device. There is no return MIDI connection from interface back through to the E1, so no easy way to sync patch info. Two-way connections can only be easily done with the two midi ports on the E1. Not much good for my set-up. With the MIDI ports 'not seeing' on the E1, I was wrong, and was looking at the host USB connections screen, which is not relevant to the MIDI port. I do have an issue that a preset edited to use MIDI port 2, still uses the default MIDI port 1. I have asked a question about that on the forum, but no reply a day later, to what must be a basic issue. Right now, with not many presets available, the two MIDI port limitation is not a huge deal. There is the possibility, for a few pieces of choice gear, to use midi splitters and mergers. This is the least hassle option, probably. There are also the programmable MioXL, but that is much more $$$ when I have already spent $$$$$$. I wonder if they are multi-client on Windows anyway? AFAIK, only RME interfaces will share a midi port between a DAW and editor software. Macs don't have this sharing issue, although there is a rumoured future Windows update that adds this. I'm also a bit let down that the E1 will not send receive whole patch banks like a librarian. It's not like they take up a lot of memory. I'll get there, but it is going to be a faff.
@r0tekz That error with something set to MIDI port 2 but going out through port 1 sounds like the port could be set in the Lua code window and thus overriding that setting. If a preset is using the Lua code it'd need to be told to use the setting button with the line, *portNum = device:getPort()* so it's worth looking for a *portNum = 1* line in the Lua and swapping it out if so, as I found this issue once already. If there is such a line, try editing it and then sending to E1 and trying again. So are you trying to send the MIDI through Bitwig and then out to the devices? I'd guess that's quite complex. For my part I'm intentionally avoiding the DAW and just letting the E1 talk straight back and forth to devices. So the MRCC can receive MIDI from the DAW and from the E1 and route it all where it needs to go. II could probably do a smaller video just on how it's set up if that's help people.
Thanks for the info on the Lua setting. I'll check it out. I notice that quite a few enquiries on the forum go unanswered. Yeah, my MIDI set-up is pretty complex already, with multiple interfaces and a lot of synths/modules, nearly all vintage. The only immediate way to access them all is routing though the PC & DAW, but that would not be two-way. For now, I am going to use the E1 MIDI ports and splitter/merger boxes to connect just the following: Microwave 1, K4r, D-550, ESQ-1 & DSS-1. The two RME UFX II MIDI out ports going through the two E1 MIDI ports to two sets of splitter/mergers. Hopefully it will not add too much latency or jitter to the MIDI. This way, I can still use other editor/librarians like Patchbase for the ESQ-1 and Edisyn for the k4r.
@@r0tekz I think you have more stuff than me, so it's likely it's more complex overall In case it helps: I have the rear-panel RME UFX MIDI I/O 1 going in and out of the MRCC, and the E1 uses one of the USB on the MRCC as both an in out, so that's standard WIDI dongle on the E1 to WIDI USB host on the MRCC. This means the E1 doesn't USUALLY go via USB or through the PC at all which I found quite attractive, as I don't add any PC latency, BUT if I want, MIDI can be routed into the RME interface easily via the MRCC and thus reach the PC. That way I can record my movements, then pump those out of the RME to the device from DAW if I like. The exception here is the Ableton control, which seems to only want to use USB from E1 to PC, so that's jacked in, but uses a specific script. I had an issues with this where the script ONLY want to use MIDI 1 on the E1 and changing that would mean a lot of re-writes that are beyond me, so I've moved all my patches and WIDI dongles over MIDI 2 on the E1 I'll need to buy another merge to get all the patch dumps back to the E1 without using up all the MIDI inputs to be honest, but I've yet to do that. In short, yeah it's hard to get going and I had plenty of WTF moments too, but once it's all ready it's inimitably cool for vintage gear users. I'm more than happy to keep chatting about it, it seems odd that forum is a bit quiet as often it's pretty active, you could maybe try a different section of it?
Hi, great to see you have an RME interface as well. Are you going to make a patch TotalMix?
I probably won't as I just don't use that much of it really, just the main mixer in windows, but it sounds like another good use for an E1!
dumb question: does a black mist / black diffusion filter help with this problem? 90% of my photography work is clothes for catalog and the Moire issue is really frustrating
I'd definitely consider a 2nd hand S1H for that job as it doesn't have the same issues, and to be honest the sensor is a little better as it wasn't compromised by phase-detect AF. I think you gain about a stop of DR back which is not to be sniffed at. That's a common question it isn't dumb, especially as it seems to make logical sense: you blur the image, and the moiré can disappear right? The reason it doesn't work is that the moiré pattern is the result of a direct relationship between the spatial sampling frequency of the photodiodes (the grid of sensor pixels) and the resolution of the lines on the in-focus clothing. An OLPF is (simply put) a bit of glass directly above the sensor pixels that diffuses light across the rows and columns, blurring the harsh grid. It's reasonably parallel to FXAA anti-aliasing in games. BPM just diffuses the image a little, mainly in the darker areas, but the blur isn't to remove moiré. In simple terms, the amount blur required to remove moiré issue before light hits the sensor would be considered "out of focus". The same thing scuppers the theory "use old lenses and it won't happen". Perhaps true if the lens is broken, but I managed to see a moiré pattern in an old film projector lens from the 1890s, because the lens had focused the light correctly on the sensor, and in that area the lens resolved enough lines of resolution for the cloth, which had a very high-frequency material to be an issue. IRL SOURCE: in this video I used a BPM on the lens, and the simple black t-shirt I'm wearing had a purple line around the in-focus area. I had to secondary to get rid of the saturation, the pattern is still there but likely isn't visibly on UA-cam luckily. If you're interested in further information, investigate "Nyquist and moiré". Exactly the same ugliness as we get with moiré in images occurs audibly with sound if we cut off the sample rate sharply without a smoothing filter of some description. Sound is obviously different, but again oversampling cam be used (analogous to shooting in 8K for 4K deliver for example) and so on, so it's fascinating how the same principles apply across the board and the concepts are sort of usable everywhere.
So If I want to map, say, a Twisted electrons MegaFM, is it likely I'll have to do some coding or can I manage to avoid it and still get a lot out of this machine. thanks
MegaFM has a very straightforward control with MIDI CCs. Thus, no programming needed. Just drag an drop . I personally have MegaFM and TherapSID, the E1 works with both of them.
As Martin says it's simple, cos it's all CCs. Page 18 and 19 of the manual list em all, so you can make your own patch in the browser editor if you want, or use Martins: app.electra.one/preset/agumRKsAcLxteYlPGId4 I'm not sure if the Mega FM patch can dump to the E1, you'd have to ask on the forum or similar.
I am REALLY confused. Why would you call that a "controller?" There are only a few knobs, no sliders, keys, mod wheels or a ribbon - ya know - controls.
Well it is a device with controls (eight rotary encoders and a touch screen) that can control all aspects of MIDI, so I’m not sure what else i would call it
I'm interested in seeing how it works controlling ableton and it's instruments and plugin and plugins like serum, pigments and vital. All the videos seem to be of bitwig.
Yeah I didn't include much of that in there, it's all using this script in case it helps in the meantime github.com/xot/ElectraOne
This unit hasn’t been hyped so much, witch I like. Thinking to get one to serve my Synthstrom Deluge, witch is basically a DAW in a box. Anyone else using this in conjunction for the deluge?
