The Ultimate MIDI Controller? - Electra One MK ii
The Electra One MK II MIDI controller builds on the strengths of its predecessor, adding a faster processor that lets the most versatile MID controller available do even more.
Front and center the Electra One MK 2 is its large, full-color touchscreen, which offers an intuitive interface for controlling a wide array of parameters. This touchscreen is highly responsive, allowing users to navigate through menus and adjust settings. The interface can display a multitude of control elements, including faders, custom controllers and buttons, all of which can be tailored to the specific needs of the user. This flexibility makes the Electra One MK 2 suitable for controlling software synthesizers, digital audio workstations (DAWs), hardware instruments, and more. All of this is extendable using Lua scripting, as well as by using the web editor and it's SysEx functions.
It includes USB and two MIDI DIN i/o connections as well as a MIDI host port, ensuring compatibility with virtually any piece of MIDI-enabled equipment. This range of connectivity options makes it a central hub for any studio or live setup, capable of interfacing with both vintage gear, software and modern instruments too.
The Electra One MK 2 also boasts an impressive build quality. The aluminium enclosure is both lightweight and durable, making it ideal for both studio and on-the-road use. The controls themselves are crafted with a focus on longevity and tactile feedback, featuring high-quality encoders that are designed to withstand extensive use without degrading in performance, and feel great and solid.
Customization is a key aspect of the Electra One MK 2 experience. The controller allows users to create and store multiple presets, which can be easily switched during live performances or recording sessions. These presets can be as simple or as complex as needed, providing everything from basic parameter adjustments to intricate control setups that integrate multiple devices and software applications. The ability to quickly switch between these presets adds a layer of versatility that is particularly beneficial in dynamic performance environments. It can also host patches inside the device, using the Snapshot feature, which is great for older instruments for which backup cards can be expensive.
The Electra One MK II is highly regarded for its community-driven development approach. The company behind the controller actively engages with its user base to gather feedback and implement new features, and community members are ready to help make new patches. This collaborative approach has resulted in a product that continually evolves as the userbase grows.
In summary, the Electra One MK 2 MIDI controller is a powerful and versatile tool that offers a high degree of customization and integration with both hardware and software. Its robust build, intuitive touchscreen interface, and extensive connectivity options make it a valuable asset for any musician or producer looking to enhance their control over their music production or live performance setup. With its user-centric design and ongoing development, the Electra One MK 2 stands out as a premier choice in the world of MIDI controllers.

Kef R3 vs Genelec 8030c Which is better for nearfield use? They cost nearly same in my country, so I’m curious which one is better!

    •  17 днів тому

For close nearfield use I’d probably pick the Genelec, it’s specifically what they’re designed for and you’ll have an easier time in setup and general use 👍

The KEF are designed as bookshelf stereo speakers. You can use them as monitors but I think you need a little more distance from them, as I had when I was using them as such.

Amazingly enough, there is a company offering installation of an OLPF now, which is something that needs to be done in a proper lab with specialised equipment. As a result it is only available in limited quantity for a relatively high price. Practically speaking, it may only be useful for those in the USA too due to shipping, but I shall investigate it. kolarivision.com/product/olpf-aa-filter-upgrade-for-panasonic-lumix-s1-and-s5-cameras/?ref=126

How does pixelshift in S1 effect moire? And: Why dont you just set in camera sharpness on minus 2?

    •  24 дні тому

I don't know about the S1 pixel shift I'm afraid, in terms of sharpness, it's already at minimum. Moiré issues are caused by excessive detail above the sensor's Nyquist limit, it's a physical phenomenon that is separate from digital post-processing, such as sharpening. An OLPF specifically blurs the boundaries between photosites in order to smooth the transition between the individual "samples"

Woah, that's bad... no I hadn't seen that at all as I always shoot the BRAW on the S1H. Why not just fix it in post? some gaussian blur in davinci on channels and it's generally gone, at least never saw footages (i don't own an S5iix but did color grade a hefty load of footages from various cameras with moire issues) that weren't quickly saved in post when shot in prores 422

    •  4 місяці тому

I've had plenty of examples already that either can't be fixed, or where fixing takes a long while to achieve an acceptable result. Certainly the "blur the channels" trick didn't work for the example in the video with the acoustic treatment, i just edited around it. I did however have an interview that I fixed with that technique, but it's so hit an miss.

@ thanks for the answer, as i said i don't have an s5iiX but i'm really curious on how "worse" it is compared to a lot of other prosumer cameras like the sony's and fuji ones which have some moire issues too. Like of course on a cinema camera that would be obvious, but on a photo/video hybrid made for casual shooting like the s5iiX, a7s3, fx3 and such, i'm curious to see how much worse is the s5iiX for everyone saying it's a major flaw.

Comedian Marc Maron first introduced me to the concept of what I later came to know as Gear Acquisition Syndrome in an old bit of his where he talks about needing a pair of "magic running shoes" that would make him leave the house and actually exercise, all by themselves, without him having to do anything. Shopping addiction exists in all areas, and like you said, it's always an excuse, a displacement strategy like any other addictive behavior. Just listen to Gabor Mate talk openly about his addiction to shopping for classical music. In contrast to "normal" shopping addiction, G.A.S. is particularly sad though because it turns creative activity and/or self-therapy into paralysis and self-harm.

    •  4 місяці тому

Yes totally, and also the marketing itself is deeply rooted in manipulative psychology and is designed to enable those weaker parts of us that are looking for an excuse not to work. I think even the forefather of "Public Relations", Edward Bernaise-who was Freud's own nephew-would likely be amazed at how efficient the machine is now at pleasing the vices of the customer's Id!

    • @CC3GROUNDZERO
      @CC3GROUNDZERO 4 місяці тому

@ Oh yes it totally is. Not sure about other industries, but camera manufacturers excel at (and indeed thrive excusively on) deliberately stoking FOMO and GAS in their customer base. It gets so bad that there are people who feel obliged to deliver their pound of flesh to keep "their" favorite corporation alive, buying things which they know they don't need and are not worth the money because otherwise the system will fail. (Nikon in particular is a fascinating example of this imho.)

    • @madnessprod
      @madnessprod 4 місяці тому

just add a digital olpf fix during color grading in post and it's gone, i don't really see why people makes such an issue with moire which is in most case a 30 sec fix in post.

    •  4 місяці тому

@@madnessprodi think "in most cases" is wrong in my experience. in SOME cases you can quick fix it by messing about with a blurred colour channel, in some others you need to secondary and track, then desaturate the entire section and recolour it in order to get a good result. In others it's unfixable and ruins the shot. But it all depends on your luck really. A deep-focus wide angle of a detailed city for example can descend into a mess and not be improved by blurring a channel, similarly some clothes or certain other furnishings.

Thank you for your work on this. I bought an S5IIX a few weeks ago. In many ways it's the perfect camera, but my previous Canon camera haunted me with moire and I can't have that constant concern again. Because of this and other videos I've seen on this issue, I’m looking into changing the S5iiX for the Sony FX3 which does have OLPF, as does the FX30. But ... I don’t want to as the S5IIX is great in every other way. From what I’ve read on this, and I’m no expert, moire is less likely if shooting at the sensors full range as this prevents down sampling which is a component of moire. I wondered if using a diffusion filter to soften image, whilst shooting at 6k may be the only solution. I spoke to someone who uses vintage glass with S5IIX and they reported no problems. But I don’t have that luxury unfortunately. I simply don't know why Panasonic didnt add OLPF filter to the X. The GH5'S' added OLPF. The S1'H' added the OLPF. Either there were technical reason, or not having OLPF filter maintains product sepration for the true 'cinema' S1H series which is soon to be upgraded. Maybe the fear was the S5IIX would canabalise sales of that camera. The Lumix G5H'S' has OLPF and is cheaper than the S5IIX, but has none of the image stabilisation etc. So it may be a product separtion thing. Black Magic latest 6K cinema camera now has OLPF. Many thanks for your help on this dreaded subject.

Regarding the production of music I am glad that I dont have that much gear because I am doing things mostly out of the box. I guess its a general problem because nowadays you can get everything from everywhere. You are flooded with advertisings. "For this sound you need this. For that sound you must have this..." I think the point is that you can produce everything with everything if you just invest enough creative effort. Maybe its better to learn one tool and master that instead of heaving a toolbox with tools you never use. E.g. a pianist has only a piano and nothing more so he has to be creative to get the most out of the instrument. I know those words are easier said than done. When I think about buying additonal gear/software I try to ask myself "Do I really need this, does it really helps me to get that step further in creativity. Does it opens new creative worlds too me?". Well at least I try but I think its worth it unless you will sink in gear you will never use (that much). *blows the dust from his Microfreak*. Stay creative ;)

There's a big subject here I think too, which is just _how far_ towards only selling products the internet has gone. Everything from search engines to UA-cam is now massively biased towards selling new things, and a big part of that now is FOMO marketing, constant encouragement to *buy more* and *upgrade now* instead of using what you have. It's hard to find just information now, that isn't tainted by the desire to sell things to you.

I currently own five Atomos recorders (3 Ninja Vs, one Ninja Blade and one Samurai Blade). None of these are very colour accurate and I just put up with it. I trust my cameras and I know that the recorders are recording what the cameras see. I set the white balance and I use the waveform and false colour to nail the exposure. I agree this can be a bit aggravating; however, because of the kind of work that I do, these recorders are essential for the work I do.

great informative video. i read through all the comments and I must admit the amount of the details shared here. One of the Lumix S5 user told me that if he shoots video in V-LOG, he never sees any moire. Not sure if he didn't notice it or he was telling the truth. Any thoughts?

    •  5 місяців тому

Many thanks! The picture profile selection, whether Log or otherwise cannot prevent moiré patterning, as the patterning is the result of an interaction between the physical natures of both the subject and the sensor. What does often happen is you don't spot it on the monitor if it is there.= due to reduced contrast etc, even if using a LUT it can be hard to see on a small monitor. There's a huge amount of luck involved because it's related to Nyquist limit. As an example, on a recent shoot a man's shirt caused no problems until he walked to a particular distance, at which point it danced all over with moiré patterning, because it was only at this combination of distance and focal length that the resolution of the pattern in the synthetic material reached the limit of the camera's resolving resolution. I recently completed a very large project with around 100 people variously interviewed and filmed, and can only recall three pieces of clothing that caused me issues, but those issues were quite serious. For the most part it doesn't show up, when it does it's a curse! It's also particularly bad for large bodies of water and landscapes or cityscapes, where you'll see highlights become rainbow coloured. A good article on Nyquist and moiré is here: theasc.com/blog/shot-craft/moir%C3%A9-and-the-fashion-of-harry-nyquist

When I was younger I wrote more songs on my cheap gear but it was definitely limiting. Now I have amazing gear but I don't have the same momentum with songwriting. I was watching a Beatles documentary and realised they started with some pretty crappy instruments...but by Sergeant Peppers they had the best gear and musicians at their disposal and the sound was definitely better. They didn't need to own everything because the Abbey Road studio had so much great stuff. Hunger and drive matters the most...but it is pretty cool to be able to have gear that helps rather than hinders your overall sound. I think what helped me when I was younger is that I had more community supporting me. The more hours and years you put into something I feel it earns as well the credibility and need for better gear. Yo-yo ma has the right to buy an $100,000 cello if he wants because he's made millions.

A lot of it actually having something to say, too, that feels honest and original. That's way easier when you're younger I think. So often people will try to fill that gap with stuff...

But remember that the Beatles were never really "gearheads", even by the time of Sgt. Pepper, and they were happy just to use what they had, or was given to them. In a 1965 (?) interview, for example, John Lennon was asked "Which amplifier do you prefer?", to which he replied "one that works" 😂 Even the recording equipment at EMI during Sgt. Pepper was antiquated (4 track recorders), but it worked well for them.

    •  6 місяців тому

@@dingalarm Yes doesn't McCartney still use his original Epiphone? As did Lennon all his life? Arguably it was all the restrictions of equipment in the day that helped something like Sgt. Pepper into existence I'd say, competing with Brian Wilson to squeeze the most out of the available tech at the time etc. We can all do that in our own way now too, place intentional limits and watch how more creative we become to break the boundaries. But it is really hard when everything ever is at your fingertips too, in software terms. Software overload is almost worse than hardware GAS in a way...

This is a ridiculous video, do you realize how many great videos are made without OLPF. For some reason there are a few people that think it’s the end of the world when it’s clearly not a big issue. I never had a OLPF and never suffered from moire.

    •  7 місяців тому

It's pretty lucky that you've never had any moiré problems without an OLPF. I've had a moiré issue with the S5 ii on at least one shot per project after using the camera constantly for about ten months. Some shooting styles tend not to suffer from it so much (lots of longer lenses, shallow DOF etc). Bear in mind it still shows up even with a Tiffen BPM filter. Since moiré is specifically to do with the resolution of what you're capturing vs the Nyquist limit it's only triggered by very specific focusing and patterns, but damn when you are unlucky enough to see it do you notice it! 😂 As a result I'm quite careful about what I use the S5 ii for and often switch to the S1H in any situation where autofocus isn't needed, just to make sure it doesn't become an issue. That's sad because on paid shoots it limits the usability. TBH the number of great videos made without OLPF is irrelevant to the problem though. I also made films I was happy with on a Canon 550D back in the day, which had a big moiré issue and barely 720p resolution. But it is still a problem when it is a problem. Scroll the comments here and you'll find people stating it ruined paid shoots for them, which is sad for a £2000 camera. I think it's important to remember that not everyone has exactly your shooting experiences or does the same work style as you, thus I don't think it's a "ridiculous" video personally, rather one covering a problem that many people, if not all, experience. Your point is fair obviously, you can make great content on anything, it's more about how it moves people, but often when other people are paying and they go "why is there this rainbow pattern on my shirt" it's really embarrassing to explain away...

I don't know what camera to get, I hate the look of really sharp digital cameras which I think a lot of high res panasonic cameras have especially with a new lens, it's so the opposite of what professional cameras look like. It's weird because it isn't fake sharpness, the detail is there but it looks so jarring, cinema cameras somehow capture the same detail in a less harsh looking way. That said these new sharp cameras look amazing with vintage lenses that soften the image. But I really want to be able to get the soft netflix look with my own camera, that would be really amazing. I'm thinking maybe the s1h is the only one, black magic is good too but I like photography so having it do both is just ideal. There are so many camera options it's so hard to choose one. Probably not super important at the end of the day you can use anything but still, I want as close to the soft alexa look in a hybrid camera as I can get, but I'm worried if I get a used s1h they'll just bring out a new one with loads of amazing features I want and then I'll be sad because probably won't be able to swap.

The biggest CURE for GAS that hasn’t been highlighted enough is to simply use what you have. That’s it. You will start to love the work most and not the tool, and if you really need a different tool for the job it’ll be appearant in your work.

i love how u expressed this idea. wholeheartedly agree. something like moire/banding/flicker is too distracting vs minute gains in sharpness. shame, i love my gx85/g85 and the panasonic approach is so feature rich and user friendly. i am trying out the s5iix and i didnt notice while shooting, but after i dumped the footage, i saw some banding and flicker in my first tests as well. i saw some ppl say to try synchroscan, but its mainly the issue of *not noticing the moire *while shooting** and then discovering the issue later that makes me queasy. otherwise, the value for the features is top notch for the price. but def the fact i didnt notice the moire/flicker/banding etc makes me uneasy when shooting w the s5iix. on the fence about doin a return, jus arrived this week. i love the ibis and full frame/4k60 features. weatherproof, all around image quality aside from moire n flicker etc. but its a signif issue, noticed moire on tshirts and flicker shooting outdoor urban scenes.

Strangely, I have the opposite problem. The Ninja V I've been using always makes reds look too pink and oversaturated. It's more like an artificial cherry candy. Other cameras will pick up the same color as a red-orange, or a proper medium red. I can usually balance it out in post, but it's annoying to do that every time. The really strange part is that if I film something with green lighting and then switch back to white, THEN the white will look orange.

Was thinking of buying the S5ii because it was on a deal (as a result of the X coming out). I've been toying with the S1H and the S5ii. S5ii is obviously new, with new auto focus features, updated tech, comes with a kit lens etc and is pretty much identical to the S1H quality wise. Why is the S1H so much more expensive? It's annoying because it feels like old tech but I don't want to pay out for the S5ii if that moire is as bad as you say. I want flawless shots, cinematic looking scenes in short movies I create. Moire is going to ruin those shots and now I'm not sure if the S5ii is worth it when you say the S1H gives you a natural look out the box. Is the tech really that different to where the S5ii isn't worth it. Is the S1H really that large?

    •  8 місяців тому

The S1H is significantly heavier and bigger yes. I prefer the image quality generally, there's a slight colour difference between the two S generations. But mainly the lack of OLPF is sad. It just comes down to autofocus reliability vs OLPF TBH. Until a new S1H comes out there is.

For me it was synths. I bought my very first drum machine and cheap synth to experiment with sound, put out some music for myself and have fun. Although I’ve acquired a lot, I’ve stopped and when I feel that urge to acquire I go back to the first two devices I bought that one fateful day and just play. Just the two of them, on the floor, just like I did the first time I plugged them in to remind myself why I’m in this ❤
