When do book opinions and feedback become entitlement rather than simple opinion? It's all in how you conduct yourself. NOTE: Feedback shared with authors from ARC readers and book critique bloggers/vlogger mentioned in the video are not basic typos and the like. They are major plot overhauls and drastic changes to characters. In short, not things that are easily updated in the weeks prior to p...

Reviewers are nasty. Authors are nasty. Why can't we all just get along?

What is going on with the book community?! Too Long, Didn't Watch: Some authors try to tell reviewers how to review their books and don't want any critical reviews. Some authors also do not want to be tagged in any book reviews that have any criticism even if it's a 4/5star. Some reviewers go to the author's page and accuse them of terrible things then are shocked when there is back lash. Some ...

Character Inspiration - Esther Wan part 1
The main problem is people complaining about this is that they don’t in fact think.
Loved the video (i have more to say but I'm too dumb to articulate how I feel so imma just leave it at that)
Thank you! it's definitely a topic that could be talked about for hours, it's very nuanced and has been around for decades.
I've only done self-publishing, so I'm no expert, but your analysis of when to use a beta reader made sense to me.
Thank you! That other way just makes no sense to me, LOL!
But, I love tropes. They're so easy to build plots around.❤
Oh I have nothing against the tropes, they can be super fun and are great marketing tools! I am firmly of the mind any trope can work if executed properly :)
Lol. I think the reason the "misunderstanding" trope bothers me in romance more than any other genre is it's because, 9 times out of 10, the miscommunication could have been completely avoided if the love interests just... You know... Talked to each other... Like people in a healthy relationship do. So at the end of the book when the misunderstanding is resolved and the couple gets back together, it's like... You're still obviously not going to work out if you're too jealous, stubborn and insecure to just talk to your partner whenever an issue comes up. 😝 As for a trope that I would like you to talk about in your next video, the classic "Enemies to Lovers" trope is one that I have a massive love/hate relationship with. It can make for both the best and the worst romances ever. Basically, I think there are two types of enemies to lovers stories. 1. Two people who are part of two rival families/countries/clans meet, get along really well and fall madly in love with each other. But the conflict between their families intensifies, meaning that they need to choose between their loyalty to their families and their love for their partner. This type of enemies to lovers story, I usually really love. 2. There is no actual war or conflict involved. The two characters just absolutely hate each other. As soon as they meet, they hate everything about each other. They have nothing in common, they both can't stand the other person's personality and they make each others lives absolutely miserable with their mere existence... But they end up hooking up anyways because they're both hot and you can forgive a person pretty much any flaw imaginable so long as they're hot... This is the kind of enemies to lovers story I can't stand. 😫
Haha, yes when the miscommunication is so very minor and easily fixed it's vexing to read. And I love the idea of exploring Enemies to lovers! so often the trope is misused (ie they aren't actually enemies) or just unhealthy hahaha!
Really good advice! Before I used to feel like I needed to take every piece of advice that anybody gave me, but eventually those pieces of advice will start clashing. Like one person will say, "There's too much dialogue and not enough description" and other people will tell you "There's too much description and not enough dialogue". And that's when I realised that taking every single piece of advice people give you isn't really possible. What I try to do now is look out for reoccurring advice. Like if one person gives advice, its just a suggestion but if 10 people give the same piece of advice then they're probably on to something.
YES! all of this is so true. And it's a struggle because you want your book to be as great as it can be by taking advice, but there is such a thing as too much of a good thing 😂 And you make a great point about looking for patterns in feedback.
3:10 very very true 😅 👍
Yup! And it can be very hard, as a new author, to wrap your head around the idea until you've experienced it. At least it was for me lol
Totally agree with all of this! However, I will say that I am one of the weird ones who doesn’t look for or at reviews or anything about a book before reading it. 95% of the time I go in knowing next to nothing about the book 😂
LOL this is true, there are a lot of readers who don’t buy a book based off reviews or buy them based off the 1 stars! Unfortunately the algorithm for online stores and places like goodreads will not recommend or show your book if it doesn’t have a certain number of reviews. And trying to get your book into brick and mortar stores? Forget it, they won’t even talk to you 😂😅
@@TRS_and_MPR_Writes absolutely! I know that reviews are super important even I don’t necessarily utilize them
These books all sound awesome! I need to read more indie novels. Hope you feel better soon.
Yes! They’re so good. Since indie books aren’t usually in stores it can be hard to find them if you don’t know where to look for recommendations. Thank you! The cold is starting to subside a bit 😅
I usually don't think its weird for authors to respond to their reviews. Like, if somebody leaves a nice review of a book and the author says "thank you", or if somebody leaves a negative review of the book and the author says, "thanks for the constructive criticism. I'll take what you said on board" then that's fine. When it gets weird is when somebody leaves a negative review of a book and the author feels the need to reply to that review letting them know why everything they said in the review is wrong and the book is actually awesome.
Unfortunately I see far more of the second example than the first. Platforms like Goodreads should be a place where readers can leave honest opinions without feeling like the author is looming over them. 🙁
I enjoy the deep dives. This was an excellent chat. Thank you for sharing! ✨🖤✨
Thank you for watching! 🖤and yes, the deep dives are a lot better at conveying themes and plot points. Dawn social media and their quick videos 🤣🤣🤣

I love hearing the inside scoop from an author. This is wonderful. I’m glad to see some of these traits and issues represented through Esther. 🖤
Thank you. Writing is definitely a personal journey at times.
Loved this!
Thank you! It’s been a struggle to find good platforms to make book trailers. So happy you like this one 🥰
