This was the dumbest thing. The amount of unrealistic luck that would need to happen in order to pull this plan off is silly. How would Eugene have ensured that all of his rigged ammo was distributed just perfectly so that out of hundreds of Saviors not one of them was using old un-rigged ammo they had on hand - YET also not a single on of them had fired any of the rigged ammo beforehand for any reason. He also has to know that Negan was going to order, for the first time ever, that everyone just HAD to fire at the exact same moment. Wouldn't it have been more with Negan's character to make Ricks group watch him kill Gabrielle first, or have Gabrielle watch them kill Rick's group first? But no, not this time -- this _one_ time Negan wanted everyone to fire at the _exact_ same time...and that just happens to be the ONLY way Eugene's plan would work.

This scene was so hard to watch. It felt so real to me as if this was actually real life and how i would actually react if this happened. Such great writing and execution. Also one of the most shocking scenes in this whole series in my opinion. I say this as a screenwriter. I do love this series❤

This was based on the Vietnam Era Operation Eldest Son. It was a form of psychological warfare, to make the enemy distrust Chinese and Russian ammo. The CIA would capture supplies of Russian and Chinese ammunition, they would open up 2 or 3 cases, pull out a single box of ammo, then remove a single round. They would open that single round, and replace the powder with explosive. Then they'd put the round back in the box, put the box back in the case, and then very carefully reseal the case. The cases would then be left where it would be found by the NVA or VC. Anyone firing that round would blow up the weapon, injuring or even killing the user. Because it was so random, there was no way to identify the source or shipment. And it worked! The NVA and VC _did_ learn to distrust Russian and Chinese ammo. Which is why some of it is still around to this very day, where it occasionally makes it's way to the Middle East or some other war zone. They did the same thing for mortar and machine gun rounds. Ever see that video of an Al Qaeda guy firing a bunch of mortars, only to have the last one blow him up? Eeyup. They're still around.
