So glad you posted this. I went on Saturday and they took it down before 2pm, so I missed it this year.
Incredible .. . . 1870s. My guess is only the wealthy could have afforded this. About $112 in today's money though that was inconceivable to spend on a toy back then.
A tip of the engineer's cap to you Leonard for pulling these masterpieces back from time for us to enjoy. And the addition of the literature and pictures to match completes the story. 👍👍👍
Glad you enjoy the videos Thank you
....This is now my favorite model train of all time. Yup, subliminal and my wallet have gotten me in trouble many times.
A fantastic find and piece of history. Thanks for showing.
You just know it was a quality toy for its time when it still works after 150 years! Amazing! I'm guessing a happy medium for traction would be a wood floor? I'm sure that's what it was made for to begin with but I'll admit your "magne-traction" modification was pretty ingenious! Thanks for posting!
Carey, wondering if some sort of felt-type, indoor/outdoor carpet would be the happy medium for running? We couldn't make York this year, but grateful that you put together this demo & background presentation.
Yes a smooth linoleum or vinyl tile would probably work out better for a little more traction Hope you make it to York in April
Thanks for sharing! I love old tin trains, yours is a wonderful example of early tin toy trains. The fact that it is still intact and running is a testament to those early toy makers! Best of luck to you!
Great train and great runner. What a wonderful floor train. Great history and video and magnet advice! Cool whistle feature too.
I'd just like to mention the scents of this. I stopped by and watched for several minutes on Friday morning. They had a couple MTH locos running, so you got the scent of smoke fluid, along with the traditional AC motor ozone scent. Memorable, and heavenly.
Sorry I missed your presentation at York on Friday. Thanks for the video.
It's running better here in the video than it did on the carpeting at York
Gnarly. Built for the ages. Love the look of Voltamp.
You’ve got the coolest trains online!
Leonard, I don't know if the Standard Gauge Modular Association has a motto but if they need one I've got one for them: "Party Like It's 1939!" You can pass it on to them with my compliments! d
Yes it's a very fun energetic talented group
There's just something about them....👍
Impressive assembliage 😊 !!!
Beautiful collection of toy trains. I wish the video was longer.
Hi Leonard, fantastic trains and so shiny. Can you make your amazing videos a bit longer please, I'm just getting warmed up when they stop.
Wow. I’ve never seen so much transition-era variety of prototypes in Standard gauge.
Really nice video. I came across one of these Hudson’s in a collection of o gauge stuff. What kind of value would it have. If I end up purchasing the collection would you know someone that might be interested in the Hudson? I have seen the locomotive in person yet so I’m not sure of anything but just doing my research before purchasing.
Best to check completed auctions on live auctioneers & invaluable...there can be a wide spread of prices ...old scale as a rule does not bring a lot of $$$
That's awesome it's working and there's documentation on it!
I always wondered how a ride got off the bike. Thanks for showing that.
If one already knew how to ride a modern bike, do you think one could just hop on that and ride it? Or were they likely fall off and hurt themselves or the bike several times until they get over the learning curve?
Oh there's definitely a learning curve discipline practice helps
Those were called bone-shakers I believe, at least they were in Britain.
But yes when they fell out of fashion they were quickly called bone shakers
no way bro has the goofy ah bike 💀
Thanks for sharing!
Carey, This is another great video that hits directly home with me. Bill Gresham lived about 10 blocks up the road from me here in Orange County, CA. I didn't know. I went up there one time with Jerry Snow to look at some of his lathe parts and tooling for sale. I have fond memories of him at the train shows, he would come to my table, stretch out his arms from one end of my table to the other and lean over (tower over) and always ask: "anything here I might be interested in?" Always with a smile, always willing to share stories about "The Grande" with me. I miss him and his company's "The Back Shop" brass On3 castings, that are still found all over the country, at any type of train meet it seems. Great video.
Glad you liked the video ...I think there were two Bill Gresham's ...the Bill who built the engine worked in Indiana model building and Wabash / Norfolk Western RR's ...passed away in 2011
@@vintage-model-trains ah....interesting. I guess i want to go left and my mind wants to go right.
This King bike probably has a 48" diameter wheel. The big-wheel bikes were "direct drive," with pedals on the front wheel, like kid's tricycles. Because a person can only pedal so fast, the way to go faster was to get the biggest possible wheel (with the other limitation being inseam length). People realized that the chains and sprockets induced mechanical losses, but they could be contrived into gearing schemes that gave a regular old triangle bike a high "overdrive" ratio that made them theoretically faster than the biggest big-wheel speed bikes of the day. If you take a 26" driven wheel and drive it with a 50-tooth crank sprocket and 25-tooth drive sprocket, for a 2:1 overdrive, that combination is equivalent to a 52" diameter big-wheel (what they called "gear inches," in that you could pedal your triangle bike and get the same speed as if you had a 52" diameter big wheel, for which barely anybody had legs long enough to pedal). The coaster hub with internal hub brake was another major safety innovation in that you could decouple pedaling from traveling (to take a break, or to jump off), plus slow down for the curves!
Yes the size wheel was not all that important as they were using the links and levers for powering in the Springfield's case they did gear it up
Great history and background on that locomotive. Thanks for running it.
Here comes a hill, up go the legs!
Preservation brought back to life...great content ! Thank You
It's great you've got what Paul Harvey used to call "The Rest Of The Story!" Beutiful engine Leonard, thanks for sharing it with us!
Very cool story .... and that loco is gorgeous!!!!
my TT model trains: ua-cam.com/video/kSFFEa27WNw/v-deo.html
Very nicely detailed engine. The history is equally detailed. What a great find you have there!. It seems, based on his model railroad visits, O gauge 2 rail was very popular with clubs.
Yes clubs began with O scale in the 30's ...clubs added HO in the 40's
What a wonderful story to go with a unique engine! Thanks for sharing.
I think the design of these early bikes were made by borrowing a wheel off Grandpa' s horse and buggy.
That has an unusually shaped tender. Nice to see these trains operate like well oiled machines and not sitting in the attic or something rusting away.
Nice bike! I used to race on the track, do you ever get any old track bikes with wooden rims?
I've ridden none a number of tracks but I'm not a racer just fun to go around in circles on the banked track. I primarily just collect the older bikes before wood rims became the rage.
Very interesting where the three separate rails form two "separate, but con-joined" straight-a-ways - with the one line splitting off at both ends with a "non-switch" switch. Never seen that before. Very clever. Amazing trains. Happen to be re-reading the old Greenberg book now. Thank you for sharing. You have many more videos I'll enjoy exploring.
Yes the old three rail we don't need no stinking switches trick... This was used in many amusement parks to avoid any problematic switches on the miniature trains. I thought it would be fun to replicate and turned out to be a necessity due to the depth of the table and room. Thanks for watching
Very interesting! I've never heard any of this before. Thank you for the education.
I wonder how they were on Boston Coble stone
..rough on cobble stone ... Boston did have some wood block streets which would have been much better they were much smoother
Safety bicycle, It doesn't look very safe to me. Maybe it didn't sell well because potential customers didn't believe the reverends description of the bicycle knowing he had a closer bond with the almighty than they did. 😊
This is a High wheeler. NOT a safety bike
Read the title before commenting
Hi Leonard, That looks like torture to ride, but it's amazing to think it still has the original wheels. It must take you some practice to ride all these old bicycles.
Thank you for sharing all the great toys you have! ( trains, projectors, bikes etc.)
Thank you very much for watching Glad you like them ... Fun to share all the toys
Very interesting history on the bicycle. Thanks for the video.
An interesting side-step in bicycle evolution!
Some ideas and designs are best to be left on the drawing board
The American Star was of a similar design, but with the larger wheel at the back, and the treadles being independent. You could push them in an alternating pattern, or together, short or long strokes. It's up to you.
@@Metal-Possum Yes the star was a superior design Check out the star ua-cam.com/video/fdCugbrqsO8/v-deo.html
Beautiful locomotive and cars. Thanks for sharing.
As always, thanks for sharing Carey! I'm curious, did you ever count, to see what the overall reduction ratio is from the flywheel to the main driving wheels?
Sorry no I did not actually count the gear teeth and do the math
Interesting Manual Reverse. How does that work? Great Find!
Most manual reversers to switch the brush position causing the motor to reverse
