Hector Jimenez Garcia | Perpetual war, the nomos and a society of egoists
*Perpetual war, the nomos and a society of egoists: the contribution of Schmitt and Stirner to the Hegelian critique of Kant*
Hegel is one of the fiercest and most prominent critics of Kantian perpetual peace materialized as “a world republic”1 that acts as a integrating political horizon of republican States within a disarmed structure. From a Hegelian perspective, this conception is impossible and undesirable both conceptually (because it excludes the inherent conflictivity of the State) and factually (because it rests on an ultimately contingent agreement). The main objective of my presentation is to argue that from this double critique two exogenous and entangled references to Hegel -i.e. Schmitt and Stirner- can be extracted, which have received very little joint attention but nonetheless provide irreplaceable depth to Hegel's critique of Kant. Firstly, Carl Schmitt examines in detail in The Nomos of the Earth the Kantian notion of “unjust enemy” as one whose manifestations or actions lead to the eternalization of war, being, according to Kant, a “perpetuator of the state of nature” 2. Through a critique of this concept, Schmitt proposes an alternative to the uncertain conflictual horizon shown by Hegel as well as to the illusory federal peace that Kant defends. Thus, he asserts that the regulatory nomos as “the binding power of a Eurocentric spatial order encompassing all these sovereigns” acts as a “very effective bond” that prevails over the unstable Hegelian-inspired treaties, which lead to an unsustainable “society of egoists” (Verein von Egoisten)3, but without falling into a Kantian dissolution of sovereign statehood as an alternative to the warlike state of nature. Secondly, it should be noted that Schmitt's mention of a society of egoists can be interpreted as a reference to the famous term coined in The Ego and Its Own by Max Stirner4; an anti-idealist, radically individualist and rebel Hegelian pupil who greatly caught Schmitt’s attention. If one takes seriously this interpretation of Schmitt's words, a solid correspondence can be established between Hegel's agonistic State individuality and Stirner's egoistic Ego. I argue that the Stirnerian-Hegelian convergence in this realm is supported by three key points: the absence of supra-individual power (a), the violent expression of autonomy (b), and the expansive appropriation of the individual (c).

Attay Kremer | Should We Say that War is Necessary?
Переглядів 10728 днів тому
*Should We Say that War is Necessary?* War imposes itself. We hope it can be done away with, but it never stops impinging. While the post-WWII Pax Americana may seem to have fulfilled a dream of perpetual peace, a harmonious international regime, the wars in Israel-Palestine and Ukraine indicate a new age of warfare. Reality now reaffirms the necessity of war, and so too affirms Hegel over Kant...

*The Potential Relevance of a Kantian Perspective for the Political Upheavals and Wars of the 21st Century* Francis Fukuyama’s highly controversial thesis of the “end of history” attempted to provide the late 20th century with a perspective in which a future human history without further wars seemed conceivable. Thirty-five years later, the clear failure of this thesis can be vividly described ...

*The Vast Graveyard of the Human Race: Kant on the Future of Warfare* The opening sentence of Towards Perpetual Peace tells an anecdote that has received relatively little scholarly attention, perhaps because it could pass for just another instance of Kant’s dry humour. Nonetheless, there are solid reasons to think that its sinister undertone is in earnest. The disturbing image of a common grav...

*Modality of Hegelian War* Hegel's criticism of Kant's project of perpetual peace has, in fact, two prongs, presented in §324 and §333 respectively. Perpetual peace can neither be guaranteed in the way Kant envisaged (§333), nor is it truly desirable for ethical reasons (§324). However, in the absence of an explicit or evident logical connection between the two arguments, we seem to be compelle...

*Kant's Cosmopolitanism and the Right Not to be Treated with Hostility* The paper analyzes the third definitive article from „Towards Perpetual Peace“. On the one hand, as part of Kant’s considerations about war, hostility is allowed when foreigners don’t come with peaceful intentions. On the other hand, within Kant‘s ethical theory, hostility is disqualified as a vice. I will show that for Kan...

*The Actuality of Evil as the Ground of the Possibility of the Good* “What can I hope?” (KrV B833/Logik 9:25). The purpose of this paper is twofold: 1) to find a new answer to this ‘third question’ of philosophy, but 2) in such a way that it is relevant to the issue as to what kind of sentiment is to be cultivated vis-à-vis the ongoing violent conflicts across the globe. Specifically, I claim t...

*Just as the Movements of the Winds Prevent the Seas from Stagnation: Another Look at Hegel and War* Once again it is unfortunately necessary to think about the meaning of territorial warfare in Europe.

*Kant on Perpetual Peace as Capacity* The aim of this talk is twofold: (1) to demonstrate, ex negativo, that for Kant, perpetual peace is neither a natural state to be achieved nor a regulative ideal to be followed (2) to argue that perpetual peace is fundamentally a capacity - an exercise of reason. As Kant states in Idee zu einer allgemeinen Geschichte in weltbürgerlicher Absicht: “die Vernun...

*The Trap of Sublime Warfare* In his analysis of the sublime in the Critique of the Power of Judgement Kant explicitly address a possibility that just wars could be sublime: “Even war, if it is conducted with order and reverence for the rights of civilians, has something sublime about it, and at the same time makes the mentality of the people who conduct it in this way all the more sublime, the...

*Kant as a warmonger? On the Relevance of Kant's Peace Theory* It is well known that the structure of Kant's essay Zum ewigen Frieden mimics the disposition of a juridical peace treaty. Its form is thus analogous to the large body of scholarship that tends to primarily tie Kant’s concept of peace to issues of international politics, emphasizing Kant’s treaty as a regulative ideal, which serves ...
Yuval Kremnitzer | War is Senseless, or, how to end a War?
Переглядів 67Місяць тому
*War is Senseless, or, how to end a War?* To say that war is senseless is a horrible cliché. But that typifies talk of war: war is dramatic and fateful yet talk of it tends to be hollow. In this paper I propose to analyze war by means of its resistance to speech and conceptualization. War, I argue, is a negative thing, not only in a moral sense, but ontologically. The difficulty to think war ha...

*Unjust Enemy in Kant* The lecture once more reconstructs the perennially fashionable “figure” within public and international law, as well as a theologized construction: an evil-doer who must be destroyed in the conflict or war. *Cosmopolitan Right and Peace* Since the late 1990s - with a relative lag in comparison to research on other aspects of Kantian legal-political philosophy - Kant’s notion of cosmopolitan right has received increasing attention, fostered by the acceleration of the 'dialectic of globalisation' and the rise of the topic of migration to the center of public, political and philosophical discourse. You talk about feminist theory but women idolise insects that behead and eat their co-social sexual partner. And the feminine ideal in the animal world is the horse, which is to be idolised because of its strength... Where as men idolise horses for freedom of movement and projection of power. In whatever terms you want to talk about the "oppressive patriarchy" just remember it's the Womin not having enough babies.
