Canticle of Mary: A Magnificat, Music and text by Elaine Bearer
In the gospel of Luke (Luke 1:46-55), it is told that Mary, a young girl about 13-14 years old, received a visitation in which she was told by an angel of the Lord that she would conceive a child. “Fear not”, the messenger told her, “do not be afraid. For He has found great favor in you”. She replies, “but how can this be since I have not known a man?” “The Lord is capable of great things,” she is told. Some months later, Mary travels to visit her cousin, Elizabeth, an older woman also with child. Mary announces her pregnancy to her cousin in a poem referred to by its first word, “Magnificat”.
Although many composers have set this poem to music, few of these are women. This current setting by Elaine Bearer, was written for the Southern California Master Chorale directed by Brian Dehn. Bearer had been imagining a Magnificat during her first pregnancy, and again during the second. Now decades later this inspiration has come to fruition.

HERPES ( HSV ) IS NOT A DEATH SENTENCE .
